Madhur Jaffreys World Of The East Vegetarian Cooking

If our house was on fire, I would grab my children's pictures and this cookbook! It's that good.....it's our bible. Not only Indian recipes but those from other Asian countries. We have three other Jaffrey cookbooks. You can't go wrong with any of her books but this will introduce vegetables in a whole new way. We've had our book for 20 years and it's falling apart....held together with a rubberband -- a sign of a great cookbook! We have personal comments and ratings for each recipe so it's fun to reflect on good meals and good times.

W Is For Wasted
by
Sue Grafton

Grafton never fails to entertain with her alphabet series, and Kinsey, her smart, plucky detective is delightful. The story takes place in another era.....before cell phones and the internet, so Kinsey has to work very hard to make a living. Not only does she have to save her coins to make phone booth calls, but also uses the hotel phones. In her spare time Kinsey reads Robert B. Parker detective stories which I also appreciate. The story is complex but so satisfying.....Kinsey's a private eye with a big heart.

Station Eleven

A 2014 National Book Award Finalist, it's not your normal dystopian novel with lots of killing, teen angst. This gem is so imaginatively written, you'll hate for it to end. Think about it -- a pandemic with few survivors who still yearn to enjoy music and art despite the privations of their new reality. The chapter with the survivors living in an airport is a delight. It's the BEST book I've read this year. Others must agree as I've seen it on other Best Book lists.

Small Blessings A Novel
by
Martha Woodroof
Chinamom
, December 04, 2014
It was a small blessing that I was able to finish this silly book. My family enjoyed my diatribes at the dinner table asking why I continued to read it. I guess that I thought it would CERTAINLY get better -- it couldn't get worse. Such an preposterous story with ridiculous dialog peppered occasionally with references to pop music that made no sense or connect with the situation. The characters were either saints or sinners, mostly unlikable. I could go on and on ad nauseaum but you get it!

One Good Turn
by
Kate Atkinson

Another fun read with the wonderful Jackson Brodie, Atkinson's intrepid, "retired" investigator. Jackson is so likable; he's not slick, just a regular guy who's unlucky in love but keeps trying to make sense of life. The situations he's put into are funny, yet poignant. He's introduced in Case Histories, then appears in Started Early, Took My Dog. Atkinson's scenes can be gory but also hilarious. Her books take place in the United Kingdom so you learn many new expressions and words from this Scottish lassie.

Husbands Secret
by
Liane Moriarty
Chinamom
, October 23, 2014
A book about a decision made innocently by teenagers haunts the lives of others. The title sounds like a cliche but it is a completely engrossing, smartly written book. It has three sets of family situations that circle each other, then connect and finally resolve in a "didn't see it coming" ending. Moriarty is an accomplished weaver of family lives based on threads of assumption, which slowly unravel to create a masterpiece.
