Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bride

This book was a quick, fantastic read. With frequent interjections by other cast members Cary Elwes recounts the making of the Princess Bride. From his audition to the reunion years later the stories are insightful, honest, and engaging. I laughed out loud, smiled, and even became teary eyed once or twice, inconceivable! If you loved the movie or need a fun light read this book is nothing short of perfection. I highly recommend it.

Tao Of Pooh

I love this book. It uses Winnie the Pooh and the 300 acre wood to explain Taoist concepts, insights, and philosophies that are often very hard to explain simply to the Western mind. The book covers a variety of topics including having a quiet or simple mind, being true to yourself, and overcomplicating daily life. It is a short, easy read that will leave you wanting more. I urge everyone to pick up a copy today. It really is that good.

I enjoyed this book very much. In a genre overrun with tragic zombie tales The Girl with All the Gifts is a fresh, fantastically written, hoot of a good time. I highly recommend it.

Goblin Emperor

I loved this book. So often steampunk/fantasy stories are dark brutal affairs. Not so with this wonderfully written new entry into the genre. There is no anti hero here. The story is filled with hope, bravery, and conviction. True to life doing the right thing can often lead to sad or negative consequences. I enjoyed the colorful ambiance of the setting and the dialogue very much. The life of a new emperor is hectic and overwhelming and this is displayed with fantastic reality as characters are referred to by their title, or family name, or first name or who are they again? Trying to keep track of who was who really added to the books overall feeling of a colt finding it's legs. I hope that this will be the first novel in a new series because I would love to see what else happens in this richly crafted universe.
