Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Golden State

A smart, fast-paced novel that delves deeply into character. We meet a doctor named Julie Walker whose marriage is falling apart against the backdrop of California secession. Julie must deal with a hostage situation and a city in utter chaos while racing to deliver her sister's baby. The novel constantly surprised me and kept me turning pages, and I love that it's set in San Francisco.

Blue Nights

A darkly stunning examination of one woman's grief. Didion's sparse and direct writing style is always a joy to read, even when the subject matter is dark. Highly recommended for fans of Joan Didion and anyone who is interested in writing about grief that is honest without being syrupy.

If you've read and enjoyed anything by Orwell, this book should be in your library. The writing is so lucid, the observations so precise, I find myself coming back to it again and again.

Loved this strange and disturbing vision of a couple trying to make it after the world has turned upside down. I read a review copy of this immediately after reading Golden State, a novel by Michelle Richmond that imagines modern-day California on the brink of violent secession. Taken together, the two novels offer a fascinating glimpse into individual lives set against a nation in turmoil and a West Coast that could become a reality.
