Uzumaki 3 In 1 Deluxe Edition
by
Junji Ito
SnowRaven
, March 06, 2016
Note: This book is a manga (Japanese graphic novel), so please keep that in mind Note 2: This particular version is an omnibus; it contains all 3 volumes of the graphic novel series in one huge collection Uzumaki is a horror story about a town in Japan that is cursed by the spiral. Nobody knows what the spiral is or where it came from, but it starts affecting only the people of this particular town. People get hypnotized to kill themselves because of the spiral; people get consumed by the spiral; people turn into animals and die because of the spiral. Eventually, the spiral consumes the entire town and leaves everyone homeless, scared, and starving. When the people are on the brink of extinction, they will do anything to survive-even if that means killing and eating each other. This story is more creepy and disturbing than it is scary. It's definitely something that may leave you thinking, but it probably won't give you terrible nightmares or anything like that. Nevertheless, it is a unique story and a tremendous read.

Spirit Animals 01 Wild Born
by
Brandon Mull
SnowRaven
, February 27, 2016
Spirit Animals is a series in which every book is written by a different well-known young readers' author. The series is about a land-Erdas-in which special people bond with spirit animals. Four children from different lands bond with the special "Four Fallen": Conor from Eura (Europe) bonds with Briggan the wolf, Abeke from Nilo (Africa) bonds with Uraza the leopard, Meilin from Zhong (Asia) bonds with Jhi the panda, and Rollan from Amaya (South America) bonds with Essix the falcon. The four must join the Greencloaks-a group dedicated on stopping the evils of the Conquerers, lead by the Devourer. This is a new, exciting, and unique series for readers, young and old alike.

Wide Sargasso Sea

This is an interesting alternative to Jane Eyre. It is a prequel to Jane Eyre, in which the main character in this novel is the character of Bertha Mason, the woman in the attic. The character of Mr. Rochester is the same, however. Jane Eyre herself is not in Wide Sargasso Sea. The novel itself takes place in Jamaica, and then later in England where Bertha is locked up.

Moth Flights Vision
by
Erin Hunter and Owen Richardson
SnowRaven
, February 18, 2016
Warrior Cats: if you've ever visited the young readers section of any bookstore, chances are you've seen those books with the cats on the cover. What is it about, you may ask. Warriors is a series about 4 Clans of cats living in the forest, and their adventures of battles, survival, and...other things that I cannot explain or else there will be spoilers. Moth Flight's vision tells the story of how the 4-well, FIVE-Clans originated. New and old readers of Warriors alike can read this novel, but it is recommended that if you are a new reader, you start your Warriors adventure with Into the Wild. Also, if you are already a Warriors fan but have not read the Dawn of the Clans arc, you should probably do that before reading Moth Flight's Vision.

Plague Dogs
by
Richard Adams
SnowRaven
, February 18, 2016
This book is my favorite work of Adams that I have read so far (and yes, I've read Watership Down). This one, to me, is more intense and raises more questions about animal rights and vivisection. This novel is not for the faint of heart, because yes, these dogs escape from a science lab that mutilates live animals, so of course it gets gruesome at times.

Say I Love You, Volume 4
by
Kanae Hazuki
SnowRaven
, February 02, 2015
This is the perfect manga to read in time for Valentine's Day! It is about a young couple; the boy is popular and handsome, and the girl is introverted and pessimistic. She learns to love and open herself up, and he learns to be humble and give his heart to one person only. (recommended for ages older teen and up, because there are some scenes that elude to sex and nudity).

In this volume, the school arc ends. We see what the "P4" were really doing about the mysterious death of one of their students, and we learn why Undertaker has anything to do with it! Also, Ciel and company have to travel to another country in the next arc, which starts halfway through this volume.

Kingdom Hearts II Volume 3
by
Shiro Amano
SnowRaven
, February 02, 2015
This is the third Kingdom Hearts II manga that Yen Press re-did into an omnibus. In this volume, we see Kairi trying to escape from Organization XIII's clutches, while Sora tries to find her and Riku. Along the way, he meets Tron, Tifa, and more organization members who try to get in his way. This is closely related to the video game, but there are some original parts as well (for example, Demyx being told to watch Kairi while shs locked up. She escapes once, but then he cries because he doesn't want to get in trouble and Kairi reluctantly goes back to her prison!) It is very funny and I highly recommend it to fans of the video game.

In this Dawn of the Clans novel, we can see conflict building up, and it is clear that the Clans will start to break apart by the next novel. There are some new threats for the Clans: some of them are unseen, while one of them is very clearly seen and feared by all.

Warriors Tales from the Clans
by
Erin Hunter
SnowRaven
, February 02, 2015
Spoilers ahead because I will be discussing each individual story. (Note: I give the same review on GoodReads). Tigerclaw's Fury was the least interesting one to me out of the three, but it for sure made me hate Tigerstar more than I already do. He just seems insane, and really too bloodthirsty for reasons that don't call for it. He is very manipulative and I am a Firestar fan and I can't stand how many times he made fun of Firestar. If I had to rate this one individually, I would give it a 2.5 or maybe a 3 because it does go back to the original series and we get a glimpse of ShadowClan, and we also see Mapleshade. Leafpool's Wish was my favorite of the three. Leafpool is one of my favorite cats, and she reminds me of myself. Her pregnancy is short but we see her thoughts during this hard time of her life mixed with feelings of love for Crowfeather and fear of being kicked out of her clan. We get to see the birth scene of Lion, Jay, and Holly, and see how Squirrelflight agreed to take care of the kits as her own. I give this short story a 5 out of 5. Finally, there was Dovewing's Silence. This one starts right after the Great Battle, and let me warn you, it is so heartbreaking. The cats that died during the battle get buried in this story and their loved ones go into mourning, and it's impossible not to feel sad for them. Later on, the cats that formerly fought with the Dark Forest get shunned by their clanmates, and Dovewing worries about losing her powers. I give this one a 4 out of 5.

Beneath the Surface: A Malion Novel
by
Miranda Rae Carter
SnowRaven
, February 02, 2015
Before I get into my review, please note that I want to mention a TRIGGER WARNING for sexual assault. One of the characters in this book has had a rough past and there are some details that go into what happened to her, so please know that if that makes you uncomfortable/have a trigger. Also, this is a book by a brand new author, so there are a few grammar mistakes in earlier copies. Now, for my review. This is about a teen romance, but it is not as sappy as other novels in that genre have been. It is a paranormal romance, but it is not your typical vampires or werewolves...it is a race that is very unique and intriguing to read about. The story fluctuates between the main character's "normal" life following a traumatic accident, and her time spent underground with this mysterious race--the Malions. There is love, heartbreak, teen angst (of course), Canadian references, angry Malions, and of course, sexy scenes.

Ng Life Volume 4

, December 12, 2014
This is a manga (Japanese-style comic book) about a young man who is living in the present, but remembers his past life in Pompeii. He goes to school with others who also had past lives in Pompeii, but they do not remember. In this novel #4, more characters with past lives show up, and many of them actually remember their past lives. This is a cute historical love story that I would recommend to fans of Shojo (aimed towards females) manga. Anyone can read it, of course, regardless of age or gender.

Divergent 01

This is a dystopian young adult novel in which when a young person turns 16, this must choose which faction they will join. Each of the five factions have their own unique qualities, and when the person chooses their faction, they must go through initiation and pass, otherwise they will remain factionless for the rest of their lives. The main character is Beatrice, who has an inner battle about whether she wants to stay with her family in the selfless Abnegation faction, or become a new, fearless person in the Dauntless faction. I have never seen the movie, but I imagine it will be as good as this novel was.

Tiger Saga 01 Tigers Curse
by
Colleen Houck
SnowRaven
, December 01, 2014
This is the author's debut novel, and I believe it was self-published, so there are a few grammatical errors and slow areas, especially in the beginning. However, this is a very entertaining YA book. Yes, I say YA, because the main character is a teenager in love with a mysterious boy. This may sound like a boring novel, but give it time. There is shapeshifting, adventure, and lots of India in this first novel. If you are a fan of YA fantasies/romances, tigers, and/or shapeshifters, then this series is for you.

Not to mention that Michiru possesses "Shinigami Eyes", which allow her to see when a person is going to die-by a black ring around their neck.

, November 20, 2014
Not my favorite Super Edition, but then again, all of the Super Editions are great...and this one was no exception. The beginning and middle start a little slow, but things start to heat up and sometimes even get a little emotional. I for one teared up quite a few times. We get to see how our favorite Clans are doing after the Great Battle, and many lingering questions get answered in this novel. A must read for any Warriors fan who has read the entire series and just wants to know what happens following the late Firestar's entrance to StarClan.

Overall, this book was intriguing, especially if you are interested in science or forensics. There were parts of the story that were boring and lost my interest (parts that shift to the Middle East and "Invisible History" but overall the plot is easy to follow and you will finish this book quickly waiting to see how everything turns out. Will the virus spread? How many will die? Will they find out what is causing the virus? You just have to read the book to find out!

I'm sure that everyone who sees the cover of the book thinks that this is going to be some sort of horror story. This story is really a fictional, historical thriller that can be very creepy at times, with a hint of fantasy. I know that's a mouthful, but that is the best way I can describe this story without giving anything away. Other than the fact that there is time travel. And romance. And creepy photos. And very weird monsters. Oh, and an old house run by a "peculiar" woman who can shapeshift into a bird. I highly recommend this book, and its sequel! (Personally, I thought the sequel was better than the first!)

Naked Roommate & 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College 5th Edition
by
Harlan Cohen

, October 21, 2014
This book is alright. I had to read it as a high school senior, as it was required for a class. Some of the information was helpful, and I see where the author was trying to help, but I feel as if some of the tips he gave were not really helpful for everyone. For example, he says that students should most likely give up their long distance relationships while in college because there are new people around, and your relationship will keep you from socializing and doing your work. While this may be true for some, I think students are perfectly capable of doing their work, socializing, and keeping a long distance relationship (I did it, myself). I did not get through half of the book because it made me too stressed out, I disagreed with some of his points, and I was able to solve my college problems on my own. I am sure that this book will be useful for some high school seniors. But for others, you are better off saving yourself the stress by talking to someone about college in person, or just living through it on your own. Good luck either way!

The series only has about 11 or 12 volumes out right now, and it takes a few months for the next volume to come out, so if you are like me and dying for the next book, maybe you should just re-read it. Or, if you are new and considering but don't like to wait, then perhaps wait a few months before starting this series.

Watership Down

, October 15, 2014
A very nice classic. I have read many animal fantasy novels (such as Warriors by Erin Hunter) that have been said to be influenced by this book, and now I can see the connections. The rabbits in this novel do seem very human and personified, though, which leads me to believe that this book is an allegory for something. However, when I try to find out, there does not seem to be one solid meaning for the novel other than that it is just a story about rabbits and survival. At first I thought this was just a children's book, but it is actually quite intellectual and a long read. I recommend this book to everyone who is able to stick through books even through boring times, because in my opinion this book does not get "spicy" until towards the end.

I have always loved the late Mr. Walter Dean Myers' work ever since middle school (which was a while back!), and this one does not disappoint. This book is an easy read because it has its fair share of pictures inside that are meant to be drawings done by the main character. This story was very relatable and very sad towards the end. If you're going to read one of Walter Dean Myers' books, this should be the one to read. Of course, he has many other great ones, but this one may just take the cake (at least for me!).

This is a "super edition" that is separate from the main Warrior cats saga. This super edition, that is to say: a bigger than normal book focusing on one character, is about Yellowfang, the ShadowClan outcast who would late become ThunderClan's medicine cat and one of Fireheart's greatest mentors. This story describes Yellowfang's life from kithood up until she was forced to leave her own clan. This story answers questions about her forbidden love, her evil son, and why she had to become a medicine cat. This is a must read for any Warriors fan. If you don't know what Warriors is, I suggest you start with Into the Wild, by Erin Hunter.

This is indeed the beginning of an amazing adventure. Do not let the length of Hunter's Warriors saga intimidate you; one can consume the saga arc by arc, starting with the original excitement of Into the Wild. Follow Rusty, the protagonist, into his wild journey as he learns what it means to be a true Warrior. Also, do not judge a book by its cover: although this series is about feral cats, various topics such as love, betrayal, coping with death, and fighting for what's right are in abundance in the Warriors series. Hurry and delve into the clans!
