Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Stories of Jane Gardam
by
Jane Gardam

Jane Gardam is such an amazing, inventive, writer. These stories are different from any others that you will ever read. What an amazing mind she has to come up with the different scenarios and then to write them in such clear, concise language. I'd love to sit down with her and just let her talk. There is nothing ordinary about Jane Gardam. I fell in love with her writing when I read "Old Filth" and have been a fan ever since - reading anything she writes and longing for more. A library full of Jane Gardam books would not be a bad thing. Stranded on a desert island? Take her books along and never be bored. Each reading is a new experience. One cannot say that about 'authors' like Patterson.

The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher
by
Hilary Mantel

Of course I was excited when I found out that Hilary Mantel had a new book out. Of course I love it. Who could not love her writing? While "The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher: Stories" is far different than her "Wolf Hall" and "Bringing Up the Bodies" since it is a collection of short stories, it is nevertheless a new favorite of mine. One review that I read mentioned that it is more reminiscent of her memoir "Giving Up the Ghost." I am not usually a reader of short stories (not for any good reason - just that novels are more 'meaty') but these stories are perfect for bedtime reading. Or lunch time reading. Public transport reading. ANY time reading.
