A Strike to the Heart
by
Danielle Grandinetti
babbling Becky L
, April 12, 2022
“He might be an ex-soldier, a sniper trained to kill, but he prayed daily that kindness would be the trait people would identify most when they interacted with him.” I love how Danielle Grandinetti marries Miles’s sniper’s skills to that of a tender heart! Strong, shrewd, and swoon-worthy, Miles is willing to sacrifice everything for those he loves. A totally relatable romantic suspense hero. Then, Grandinetti’s heroine, Lily, is a similar juxtaposition of traits. Fiercely independent, Lily is a compassionate, dog trainer who needs protection. She can push the ones she cares about to great heights. Now Grandinetti really had my attention, and I was swiping pages as fast as I could to reach the conclusion of A Strike to the Heart. While this was my first Grandinetti novel, it won’t be my last. Faith is a constant thread throughout this novel. Lily seeks God out daily. Miles isn’t quite as comfortable with God due to past events, but one hopes and prays he will find his way totally back to God. Perhaps… ”second chances were meant for redemption.” Miles needs redemption in more ways than one. He fails his team, it seems. Will he fail to protect Lily, who is becoming very important to him? Will he fail his boss? Lily’s family, who doesn’t care much for him? So many questions!! So many possibilities! I suspected some answers, but Grandinetti successfully includes a lot of twists and turns until more than Miles and Lily were unsure.

Bad Housekeeping An Agnes & Effie Mystery
by
Maia Chance
babbling Becky L
, June 20, 2017
Dumped by her longtime live-in boyfriend, Agnes Blythe is back in Naneda at her father's house. Her great-aunt Effie shows up to complicate matters, and before the reader can blink, Agnes and Effie are wildly chasing possible leads all over town, both starting and dodging rumors about who could have killed one of town's most powerful women. Language and situations kept this from being a book I would recommend, although I did find myself caring about the characters. I have to admit, I truly did want to know more about Agnes, Roger, Otis, Effie, and even the mayor and the housekeeper. Other things I found to like in the book:it seemed almost ALL the characters in this town were quirky. There were several laughs at the author's ability to turn a descriptive phrase. Action abounded. Things I didn't like, besides language and situations, had to do with inability to suspend disbelief. One issue that was "solved" just didn't have enough supporting evidence in the book why that character would have a desire to act in such a manner. I found another somewhat major solution just implausible given the set-up. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. I am freely leaving a review, for whose contents I am solely responsible.

Hospitality and Homicide
by
Lynn Cahoon
babbling Becky L
, June 03, 2017
Just LOVED it. Lynn Cahoon has the "cozy feel" down pat as she writes about South Cove and and Jill Gardner, proprietor of Coffee, Books, and More. This is the second book of the series I've read. I'm coming to believe that the characters are living, breathing, to the point of writing themselves. Several characters fall into the quirky category, but as you read, the character grows and changes until you can't help but like them. I didn't like Aunt Jackie at first, but she's growing on me. Esmeralda is another character that at first the author encourages the reader to question and dislike, yet the character won't settle for that treatment. Love the way Cahoon shows that a love like Harrold's can actually change someone for the better. Another technique Cahoon employs to make her characters real is to have a slew of personal crises going on at same time, giving the book real-life effect and fun layering. Jill/Greg, Toby/Sasha, Josh/Mandy, Nate/anybody. In some novels, this could be tedious. In this case, the book just becomes a great mesh of a entertwining threads to produce a beautiful tapestry. All in all, this style of cozy makes me want to cheer and look anxiously for the date of the next book's publication. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. That did not affect the opinions presented in my review, for which I am solely responsible.

Hidden Threat
by
Connie Mann
babbling Becky L
, May 30, 2017
Another of the lost foster kids the Martinellis took in is still trying to find her way. Eve Jackson, do-gooder and trouble maker rolled into one, has returned home to help Mama Rosa recover from cancer. Will the town be able to recover from her overzealous attempts to protect the environment and one special baby, or will all be lost, including a couple of lonesome hearts? Cole Sutton struck me as a thornbird. Eve has hurt him badly in the past. She is likely to do so again, yet Cole cannot seem to stay away. Can he and Eve find peace while Cole is also defending his ranch against an unknown foe? I honestly did not like Eve at first. She is impulsive, making decisions for others based on her world views alone, careening over others' needs and plans. Typically, if I have this much dislike for a heroine at the start of a book, I just do not care for the novel. Connie Mann does the near impossible for me- takes a despised heroine and weaves her prosaic magic until I am a big fan of both Cole and his semi-nemesis, Eve. I received this book from the author and NetGalley. I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review, for which opinions I am solely responsible.

Beyond Justice
by
Cara C. Putman
babbling Becky L
, May 11, 2017
Hot off a big courtroom win, up-and- coming lawyer Hayden McCarthy is tapped for a clandestine, high priority case. The more questions Hayden asks, the more threats, death, oddities at the law firm, and other strange coincidences surround the bizarre case. Beyond Justice is a very fast paced legal thriller by Cara Putman. The characters, whether Miguel, whom the reader sees for only moments, or Mrs. Rodriguez, Andrew, Emilie,Jorge, and Hayden;are all so believable in their fear, faith, and actions. I especially liked the tenacity I saw in characters. Each of the above players in this drama holds onto what he/she feels each is called to do,regardless of the cost. And costly it is. Jobs, hidden secrets, security, safety, even life itself. Nothing is sacred to el jefe, who is determined to recover damaging information. I thought Director Snowden well-named,although "Snowdem" might have been even better! Good writing often includes quotables. A few: "Anywhere there is a void, evil likes to take a foothold.” "If only her butterflies would fly in formation." A truly fascinating study of human nature's best vs. worst, with acknowledgement that faith in God is our ultimate foundation. I gratefully received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I am freely leaving my review. All opinions are solely my own responsibility.

Fatal Mistake
by
Susan Sleeman
babbling Becky L
, May 09, 2017
A best friend turned mortal enemy. The young boy Tara Parrish played with as a youth has evolved into a hateful serial killer. Oren Keeler uses his knowledge of explosives to create terrifying bombs to kill women as he pursues Tara, the one woman who escaped his murderous intentions. Cal Riggins, FBI Special Agent tasked with keeping Tara safe, finds himself in danger of losing his heart. But both Cal and Tara have gigantic trust issues to overcome before they can consider a relationship...if they can survive that long. In Fatal Mistake, Book one of the White Knights Series, Susan Sleeman expertly engages the reader within the first sentence. Sleeman's writing is taut, tension-filled, and addicting all at once. The reader is taken on a terrifying journey alongside Tara and Cal and can only hope to emerge in one piece at the end. Just in time to read the preview for book two, Kill Shot, coming in early 2018! I'll be anxiously waiting!! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This did not influence my opinion, freely given.

Sandpiper Cove A Hope Harbor Novel
by
Irene Hannon
babbling Becky L
, April 23, 2017
Quite chancy, the premise behind Sandpiper Cove by Irene Hannon. Small town Police Chief Lexie Graham gradually falls for a man with a prisoner's past. What will happen to her reputation? In addition, she trusts this same man, Adam Stone, to mentor a teenager who is headed for trouble. How can this NOT end in disaster? This is the first Irene Hannon book I have read that is not romantic suspense. Hannon excels in this category as well. I was surprised to see that this is book three in Hope Harbor series. Sandpiper Cove stands alone well. I love the people of Sandpiper Cove. From Lexie and Adam, who take turns doubting the wisdom of a relationship like theirs; to Taco Charlie; the "feuding" pastor and priest; and Matt and Annette. While most townspeople are sweet and caring, some carry huge burdens they struggle to move beyond, and others just cause those around them to struggle. Fortunately for us readers, Hannon draws her subjects with enough flaws or conflicts with others that we are quickly caught up in their struggles. The resolutions seem realistic and plausible in real life. The faith component makes the book shine as the message is deftly woven into its fabric. I was thrilled to read that Ms. Hannon will be returning with us for more of Hope Harbor in the future! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to leave a positive review, and all opinions are solely my own.

What the Bishop Saw: Volume 1
by
Vannetta Chapman
babbling Becky L
, April 19, 2017
When a much disliked Amish man dies in a fire set by an arsonist, Bishop Henry Lapp must guide his people to safety and the truth. It doesn't help that the Englischer they have to communicate with most is a young, brash,red-haired female investigator. As the arsonist ramps up his attacks, Henry has to watch the People lose life, property, and even desire to remain in this Colorado community. Will he make the ultimate sacrifice that almost cost him dearly years ago in Goshen, In? I truly love Vannetta Chapman's Amish mysteries, and this is the best one yet. So often the bishop of the People is portrayed as being strict, stiff, and power-hungry. Henry is none of these. He truly seeks God's will in all things, puts others before himself, and sees people with "the Father's Eyes." It would be a blessing to be a friend of Henry's. We also get to know Emma's family. They are as complex as Henry, and are woven into the story along with others of the church to make a tightly woven,multi-dimensional tale. One quote true for Amish and Englischers alike: "They would all be remembered by their deeds, their kindnesses to one another, and the roots of love they left behind." What The Bishop Saw motivates me to ask God for vision to see people as incredibly compassionately as Henry and ultimately God our Father see them. I gratefully received this book from the publisher and NetGalley. I am freely leaving a review. I am solely responsible for the opinions therein.

Murder, Plainly Read
by
Isabella Alan
babbling Becky L
, October 24, 2015
What a Fun Cozy!! really loved Murder, Plainly Read, part of The Amish Quilt Shop Mystery series. I have missed several books between the first and this, but had no trouble picking enjoying this one. Englischer Angie Braddock cannot keep her nose out of others' business, especially if it involves an Amish friend or two of hers. Can she outmaneuver her controlling, socialite mother; stay friends with her childhood friend, Jonah, whose wife hates her; and dig to find the truth without alienating the handsome Sheriff Mitchell? This is cozy reading at its best. Isabella Allen provides a murder, without tons of gore. We see a slice of Amish life, but also Englischer and Amish being friends. And did I mention the obligatory quirky characters? Love how distinctly odd some of Angie's friends and relatives are. Whether Willow, who owns a tea shop, has purple hair and makes horrible original teas; to Angie's mother who is clueless to what makes Angie tick, the supporting characters help make the mystery not just dangerous but also a barrel of laughs!! ( And don't forget Petunia the Goat!!) Well-done, Isabella (Amanda Flower)!! I have found a cozy series to love!!!!

Gone To Ground
by
Brandilyn Collins
babbling Becky L
, October 20, 2015
The small, sleepy town of Amaryllis, MS, suddenly has some action and secrets that terrify the townspeople.Over the course of three years, six women have all been killed with the same modus operandi. All but the last are older, single or widowed women. With the last murder, the evidence clearly points to the guilty suspect. The problem is, three different women are positive three different men are guilty-- and all have "proof" for a cynical police chief. I had forgotten why I liked Brandilyn Collins's books so much. Her stories fly swiftly along, as I hang on for dear life at the twists and turns that occur in the already unnerving journey. I love how Collins switches effortlessly between three very different, very complex protagonists to narrate the story. I especially loved her rendition of Cherrie Mae. Although Cherrie Mae doesn't sound well-educated, life with her husband produces literary quotes for any occasion, not to mention the calming influence and faith that wonderful lady possesses. Everyone should be so fortunate to have a Cherrie Mae in his/her life!! A quotable to live by(and not a literary quote). "You can hold your head high after going on from your mistakes. But you can't hold your head high if you live with those mistakes and never do anything to correct them." (Deena to Tully) I gratefully received this fast moving page - turner from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Shepherd, Potter, Spy and the Star Namer: Survival in Canaan
by
Peggy Miracle Consolver
babbling Becky L
, October 11, 2015
Amazing Fleshing Out of the Gibeonites!! This is an incredibly awesome book that gives a possible scenario to the treaty the Gibeonites signed with Israel in the Old Testament! At first look, the sheer number of characters presented made me quake, but as I persevered, my patience was amply rewarded with a tale rich with Mid-Eastern customs, landscape and city descriptions, and depictions of kings of the time. Shepherd, Potter, Spy, and the Star-Namer by Peggy Consolver focuses on twelve year old Keshub from Gibeon. He grows wise beyond his years as he and his community begin to hear terrifying tales of the Hebrew people slowly advancing, crushing the Hebrews' enemies as they go. Who is this God of theirs? Could the Star Namer that Keshub and his family believe is the Creator, be the same as the Hebrews' astonishing God?! What character development!! Loved Keshub and the many lessons he learned as he proceeded quickly though different phases of life. Loved the depiction of the Israelites in the wilderness, dying of snakebites, and the Bronze serpent. And mostly, I loved the fleshing out of Keshub's father, who appears to be a depiction of God the Father, with his careful guardianship over his family's safety, beliefs, training, and absolute love coupled with a great sense of justice. I cannot recommend this book enough. I received it from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Lopsided Christmas Cake
by
Wanda E Brunstetter
babbling Becky L
, October 04, 2015
Not My Favorite Brunstetter Novel... This is the first book I have read by Wanda Brunstetter that also has a coauthor, her daughter-in-law. Together, the Brunstetters spin a yarn about two 32 year-old single twins who are suddenly on their own, taking over the house and store of their recently deceased grandparents. Elma is a hard worker, but also very particular in how things should be done. Thelma is very social, loves to entertain children rather than work in the shop, but is also very brave and good with the twins' newly inherited, wily horse. On a whim, Thelma decides the girls should enter a baking contest in Shipshewana. All should be fine except for two things; the girls are still battling the cranky cookstove their grandparents left behind, and they will have to assemble the cake on stage, in front of everyone. A minor detail Thelma omits to tell Elma until the last minute. When shy Joseph Beechy convinces his cousin, Dell Gingerich, to bid on the girls' disaster of a cake, the twins meet and start dating the two best friends. This appears to be a stand-alone book, which causes a few issues for me. While the twins's characters were fully developed, I was hoping for significant growth in at least one of them. The ending seemed rushed and pulled together with basting stitches instead of the small, intricate stitches for which the Amish are known. Worth reading, yes? Could it be a great book in others' eyes? Read others' reviews. Probably. In my mind, it just did not live up to the warm, fuzzy feeling I usually have when I finish a Wanda Brunstetter book. I gratefully received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Annas Healing
by
Vannetta Chapman
babbling Becky L
, September 27, 2015
Love Vannetta Chapman!! Vannetta Chapman has been one of my favorite authors who specializes in novels about relationships between the Amish and Englischers. In Anna's Healing, the first book of the Plain and Simple Miracles series, the action takes place in Oklahoma. A twister causes Anna to become a paraplegic. The accident changes not only Anna, but everyone around her. Long-held bitterness and hurts begin to be resolved in Anna's relatives and her Englisch friend, Chloe, but Anna struggles for emotional survival. Grace, forgiveness, and struggling to understand the sovereignty of God are major themes of this moving narrative. Chapman offers forth a beautiful description of how God views the death of His children...that nugget alone makes the book worth reading!! I wish I could meet Anna's mammi. The Amish elderly are both greatly respected and often deserving of that respect. I loved Mammi's wisdom, "I was able to be thankful again, and gratitude will bring healing every time." As always, I eagerly anticipate Vannetta Chapman's next offering. I gratefully received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Miracle Drug
by
Richard L. Mabry
babbling Becky L
, September 27, 2015
Pressure-packed Medical Mystery... A dead doctor, a very sick ex-president Madison who swears everyone to secrecy about his condition, a virtually unknown virus in the Northern Hemisphere...plus a moral decision for Dr. Josh Pearson on whom to treat, if the drug antibody is available-- the ex-president, or the love of his life, Rachel Moore. MIRACLE DRUG by Dr. Richard Mabry starts with a bang and like an avalanche down a mountain, picks up momentum and speed as it goes. I loved the doctor's eye view in the novel. Describing himself while actually describing a character, Mabry says the person is "concise, without added verbiage." Scenes are presented matter-of-factly, and with the feel of the harried schedule of a doctor. Mabry has a dry wit that gives a little relief to the constant strain of the mystery that tumbles first one way, then another, like a tumbleweed that is caught up in an unruly wind. Indeed, there were plenty of suspects and possibilities presented and I was literally scratching my head as I furiously thumbed pages. This is a great medical mystery and I look forward to the next medical trauma Dr. Mabry can produce.

Return to Christmas: A Contemporary Novel
by
Kathi Macias
babbling Becky L
, September 20, 2015
Inspirational and Heartwarming!! "...he never imagined it would take so long to get back to normal--whatever that might be. Or was this the new normal of his life--unnamed darkness and memories that haunted his every step?" wonders Chet Morton, twice - deployed and returned from Afghanistan. Kathi Macias, the author of Return to Christmas, understands PTSD quite well and evokes a myriad of emotions in the reader as we meet Chet and his wife, Jeneen, and vivacious three year-old, Kevin. You will want to feel sorry for Chet as he struggles to assimilate back into society, shake him as he makes poor decisions, warn him to shape up, etc. Woven into the tapestry of Chet and Jeneen's battle for normalcy and their marriage is the story of three other people whose lives profoundly intersect with those of Chet and Jeneen's. One is Dani, a worker at Kevin's preschool. The other two, actually three, are Breanna, the owner of the preschool, her husband Steve, and their adopted son, Ryan, who suffers from attachment disorder. Kathi Macias creates some wonderfully realistic characters. While I hurt for Jeneen, I also hurt for the confusion of Chet, who is trying to make his way out of the terrors of war without the Lord. Little exuberant Kevin is a delight!! And little Ryan tugged at my heartstrings, even though he avoids people. This is a wonderful, heartwarming story of God's rescue of one of his hurting children just in time for the holiday season. Don't miss it! Return to Christmas is due out on Oct. 5. For myself,I will be looking for other opportunities to read Kathi Macias's work. I gratefully received a copy of this book through netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Myst Rider
by
Miralee Ferrell
babbling Becky L
, September 17, 2015
Miralee Ferrell has outdone herself in this Horses and Friends series for kids ages 8-12. Her latest offering, Mystery Rider, is as good, if not better, than the first two. Kate Ferris and her friends Colt and Tory have reluctantly let snobby Melissa into their social circle. Melissa suggests the kids advertise the stables by riding in the upcoming Fort Dalles Days parade. As the kids begin brainstorming, they are sidetracked by a spooky phantom rider, dressed all in black, face covered, riding a black horse. Who is this rider, and why is he/she trying to scare the friends? Is it Melissa herself, showing her true colors? Miralee shows a familiarity with daily struggles a family with an autistic child can face. She also sensitively shows the struggles young teens face as they navigate uncertain friendships, battling between following their human natures or Christ's directives. The teens in this story truly begin to blossom in this book, making it enjoyable for adult or preteen as well! Highly recommended!!

Brightest and Best
by
Olivia Newport
babbling Becky L
, September 10, 2015
Which Character Would I Be? "What have we done to offend them so?" Lindy shrugged. "Sometimes all it takes is being different." Brightest and Best, by Olivia Newport, transports us to small Seabury, Ohio, back near the end of the Great War. The Amish, whose spokesman is Gideon Wittmer, want nothing more than to be left alone to worship, work, and educate their children within their own society. However, the local school board has other ideas. When the local Amish school building collapses and the teacher leaves to marry, the superintendent decides the Amish children need to consolidate to the Seabury public school...or else. This drama is a political tale, a love story, a tragedy, and a history(with a little author's license thrown in). The reading was slow at first and the multitude of names was discouraging.By the end, I felt the reader might understand the author's need to give identities to so many people. Some characters were truly on my lovable list, some I cheered or cried for, and others I wished for more growth than they were willing to consider. Isn't it that way with real humans?! Olivia Newport's Amish novels are never your peaceful, run-of -the-mill narratives. Rather, Newport wishes to show the difficulties the Amish have endured as they strive to remain a separate people in a world that wants them to conform. This is a book that makes you wonder as you finish, "Which character would I be?Am I sure?" I received this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Mistress of Tall Acre

, September 04, 2015
A Treasure to Have and to Hold... Laura Frantz never disappoints! The book,The Mistress of Tall Acres, is finished, but I am unwilling to leave the world she has so well re-created. It is a world of war, suspicions, Tory vs. Patriot sympathies that can make or break a family reputation. Laura Frantz ties into that well-drawn, taut world intrigue between family members, slaves vs. their owners, and neighbor vs. neighbor. This is certainly a wilderness Cinderella rags-to-riches story, but the happily ever after is in great jeopardy when a woman from General Seamus Olgivey's past appears out of the blue. What will happen to the tenuous future Seamus and Sophie are trying to build together? Realistic, lovable, but uncertain characters, great historical settings and love stories that cannot be forgotten easily make Laura Frantz one of my all-time favorite authors. I may have finished the book yesterday, but I could reread it today and enjoy it no less. Few books have that kind of pull in my reading world. Truly a treasure to have and to hold!!

Diskin a Master of Terrifying Suspense... What an incredible, suspense-filled story. I picked up the ebook on the recommendation of a local radio host. Diskin has set this murder mystery in Southwestern Michigan, and I enjoyed the many accurate references to locations nearby. This was not a book I intended to finish in one sitting, but once I started, I couldn't help myself. The action and emotions tumbled back and forth at breakneck speed and I couldn't stop until I reached the totally surprising conclusion! I need to disclose that this is not comfortable reading for me. Language and sexual situations would cause me to give the book an R rating. However, this murder would only happen in that world. What a stunning world and story this was! Diskin is master of terrifying suspense. Don't miss this locally-based mystery!!

The Perfect Cast

T. K. Chapin

, August 23, 2015
Wonderfully Realistic, Nostalgic Battle of Values... This is the refreshing, modern story of a high school senior -to-be, Jess, who with her brother, Henry, goes to spend the summer at her grandfather's farm. Jess is rebellious and angry over her parents' recent split, blaming her mother. Once at the farm, Jess meets two very different young men:Clint, who has been to college, and Levi, who works for her grandfather, but dreams of hitting it big in Nashville. The story is multi-generational. It could be considered a Young Adult book, but I very much enjoyed it as a parent with adult children, and grandparents would enjoy it as well. Chapin knows how to use twists and turns to his advantage and how to evoke exactly the emotions that cause the book to leave an impression on your heart. A couple of simple quotes I liked(there were so many great quotes!):"Sometimes the things we don't like are the things we need the most." Another is, "...he knows what he did was wrong and you just gotta love him through it...give God a chance to grow you." How often we reject someone who has hurt us and refuse to offer him/her the second chance Christ gave us!! I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

The Wonder of You

Susan May Warren

Characters Wrapped Themselves Around My Heart... Susan Mae Warren has amazed me again. Every time I pick up one of her books in the Christiansen family series,in this case The Wonder of You, I am positive I will be bored with this extended family. Yet every time, Warren introduces her characters and makes them so realistic that their lives are tentacles, inexplicably entwined around my heart. Who wouldn't thrill and agonize with Amelia as she sorts through her feelings for Seth, the high school boyfriend, and Rourk, the European sophisticate? Amelia bounces back and forth until she finds her true center in neither...which then allows her to see clearly which path to follow. I loved the "side story" of Amelia's sister,Grace, and her husband Max and their struggles for normalcy amidst heartache. How fun to watch little orphaned Yulia, as she slowly but surely opens up to the least likely of the clan. While the book has its moments of straight-out faith and truth, they are in small sound bites and natural in the contexts of conversations. At one point, John, the father, says to Rourk, "God wants you to obey Him not because of what you get in exchange, but simply because he asked. To give up everything simply for the wonder of knowing Him, experiencing Him, believing in Him. The Wonder of chasing after Him and abandoning all for Him." Interestingly enough, God used Rourk's own pursuit of Amelia to teach Rourk about Himself. I am always happy to recommend a book in which the romance is good and clean, the characters irresistible, and life lessons from the Word of God are embedded in a natural way. Great Premise and Plot;Weak,Confusing Conclusion... Wander back in time to Long Island, New York, 1911, when Irish immigrants were snubbed and even mistreated. James O'Leary has built a successful horse racing farm, only to find gambling is curtailed and he is on the verge of losing it all. He has two, maybe three, aces in his pocket: two beautiful marriageable daughters,Brianna and Colleen, and one foster son, Gilbert Whelan. Gilbert's last name is apropos for James's and others'actions as they are "wheelin' and dealin'" to get what they consider to be important out of life. There are some great faith lessons as well, but I take exception to the theology of Rev. Fillmore, who says, "Everyone who repents of wrong deserves forgiveness..." We would like it to be that way, but the Bible is quite clear we are NOT given forgiveness based on desire, but on the GRACE of God only, once we repent. Susan Anne Mason, in this first book of the Courage to Dream series, evokes real emotions: distress, fear, greed, love, uncertainty, rebellion, guilt, longing, forgiveness, and conditional vs. unconditional acceptance. I loved the growth of some of the characters over the span of the novel. *SPOILER ALERT* Others vacillated so much I couldn't decide if the author wanted to show that not all people grow at the same speed, or if she was just trying to draw out the length of the tome. Most books I finish I feel a soul satisfaction with, I can see why the author did what he /she did, or at least it's obvious the author has set up the real resolution for another book. While I know there are two more stories coming, I was not convinced the people in question are going to be given a whole new book. I am left unsettled, confused, and ready to call for a marriage counselor before certain characters proceed!! I gratefully received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

So Excited to Find This Horse Series for Kids!! Wow!! I have to say I am very excited about Miralee Ferrell's new series for kids, Horses and Friends, after reading Silver Spurs, her second book. I have not read her first, so there is enough back story for the book to stand alone. Miralee has done a fantastic job of presenting young teens with the realistic problems they can face. I love her accurate portrayal of a family with an autistic child. Obviously, she is familiar with someone who deals with that on a daily basis. She also presents longings of a young teen's heart well, plus the hazards of negotiating a recent move and new friendships, competition, and a new school. What made me the most excited to see, though, was how Miralee wove faith in God into the story. This family made turning to God for help their first go-to, not their last. I am thrilled not only to recommend this book to the general public, but to pass it on to my own horse-loving niece. I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review, but I was not required to write a positive review.

Get Your Joy Back: Banishing Resentment and Reclaiming Confidence in Your Special Needs Family
by
Laurie Wallin
babbling Becky L
, August 11, 2015
Must Read for Special Needs Parents... Working with special needs children in a classroom, I have often been amazed by the parents of these children. How do they do it? We teach them, help them, love them, and send them home at the end of the day. Often special needs parents are either with their children or at least "on call" 24/7. Laurie Wallin graciously opens up about life in her family with two special needs daughters and two other children, plus a husband who all need attention. How does she "do it all" without cracking, without resentment, without just plain giving up? Through surveys and citing multiple authors, always tying into Biblical truth, Wallin makes some powerful assertions. We need to forgive in many areas. We need to grieve in a healthy way. We need to exhibit the grace and love to others that we so desire they show to us. And we can't forget gratitude! Wallin speaks of forgiving continually. We must "forgive" God, since we know He could have made the special needs child different. We need to forgive the child her/himself, who is taking up so much of our time. We need to forgive churches who don't know how to help us, friends who may turn away, even family members, including spouses, who don't always help in the 'right' way. We need to grieve, even rant at God, but then be honest with Him. Tell Him how you really feel, and then listen for His voice. Instead of accusing Him, ask how these situations can be used for His glory. Give grace. To your special needs children, "ask God for eyes to see what He intended when He wired them that way." For the well-meaning professionals, who are suggesting something you've tried a dozen times already, give yourself grace. When you as a parent feel abandoned, left out, isolated, give grace to those causing it, because at the heart of it all, we all require grace. Basically, Wallin seems to say, you can hold on to your bitterness, your anger, your resentment, or you can choose to forgive. You can choose to show grace, and look for areas in which you can show gratitude. It's up to you, and whether you choose to wallow in misery or to forgive and live in freedom. The Postcard: Volume 2

Dangerous Sparks Threaten Amish Community... A daydreamer. That's what Rachel Miller is. Since she can't travel, she searches the Amish newspaper for injured people who might need a pick-me-up postcard. Little does she know when she starts corresponding with David Lapp that she has opened a door that ought to be closed. Although both David and Rachel are promised or engaged to others, when David shows up in Rachel's town, sparks fly. Sparks of attraction between David and Rachel. Sparks of disdain and warning between the bishop and David. Sparks of hatred, which confound David, between Rachel's brother Sam and himself. Sparks of interest in Scripture beyond what the bishop allows, between David and a small set of the community. Where there are sparks, there is fire. Which of these sparks will ignite and create trouble, hardship, or even shunning for community members? This was a fun, inspirational Amish story full of inner tension, outer tension, and Truth and love seeking to win out over hate and ignorance. I loved the fact that Hilton addressed the elephant in the room when it comes to a lot of Amish Christian novels. Many Amish believe they are following God, but follow instead the bishop and the Ordnung, afraid to read the Bible for themselves or find faith in Jesus Christ. (I will say, this is probably not the case in ALL Amish circles.) I liked the humanity of the main characters in their attraction for each other. I also thought it was great Hilton showed it was possible to stand up to temptation and be an overcomer. This is a book I could read twice. This is book two of three, but it stands alone quite well. I gratefully received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Living in Tandem: Working Together on a Forever Marriage

, July 30, 2015
Warning: Conviction Ahead! Who better to get marriage advice from, than a couple who almost chucked it all, but found their way back together through the grace of God?Dave and Sue Lunde discovered that they could spend more time together in the shared interest of riding a tandem bike. As they worked on their marriage and spent time together on their hobby that requires great teamwork and cooperation, they realized many applicable truths they could impart to others. With chapter themes of togetherness, teamwork, steering, creating a training plan, reserving the other seat solely for your mate, maintaining a safety net, and providing adventure, (plus others) the format is easy to follow and gels together well. Many points are memorable and convicting. "Make sure your that your spouse feels they are the most important person in your world." "If we treat people with respect, love, and reverence, they react differently. They are more willing to work with you in marriage. As a result, you unleash positivity." Wow, what marriage couldn't use a healthy dose of that!! One last quote, also dealing with how you treat your spouse: "When you talk nicely, respectfully, and politely about your spouse to others even though it may be hard to find something good to say, you control your level of anger and the depth of feelings you have. If you manage your thoughts, feelings, actions, and words like this, you create the potential for healing to occur." Sounds like self-control the Bible urges us to have, coupled with kindness!! The book does reference Scripture frequently. I hope to place this book in an easy to access place where I won't easily forget the practical applications and convicting power of its words, so influenced by the Word of God. Holly Garden, Pi: Red Is for Rookie Handcuffed in Texas Series Book 1

Definitely a Winner!! One of my favorite types of books, a cozy mystery with lots of romantic suspense, I thoroughly enjoyed Anne Greene's first book of the Handcuffed in Texas series. An over-the-top Valentine's banquet for rich, young professionals provides the start for this fast paced book which takes off with a sudden bang and never slows down. Holly Garden, the hapless heroine, is serving security at said banquet when her best friend is kidnapped. Holly has her work cut out for her. She must fight the police department's animosity towards her deceased father and clear his tarnished name. She must figure out whether handsome Stryker is for or against her. Holly also needs to convince her uncle that she can find Matt faster than her rival at the family detective agency. Last but not least, Holly needs to survive while doing all this. I really enjoyed this fast-paced tale of twists and turns. The references to Scripture and the some of characters' solid beliefs were encouraging or convicting. At one point Temple says,"I'm the daughter of the King...and so are you." "Mostly,I think of myself as Dad's daughter. A crusader with a soiled name."(Holly) " 'Take your pick.' Temple's tone indicated there was no contest between the choices." How true! We are who we think we are, just as the Bible says,"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." A great cast of quirky characters, (gotta love Grandma!)fast adventure, some spiritual truths, and an ending that will leave you begging for the next book..definitely a winner!! Dangerous Upheavals in Cincinnati!! Having read "Honor," book one of the Quaker Bride series by Lyn Cote, I was very excited to find "Blessing." Blessing is the Quaker daughter of Honor and Samuel, who fell head-over-heels in love with a high society Cincinnati brewer. Marrying against her family's wishes and that of the church, Blessing learns some very hard lessons and gains a formidable enemy as she rescues prostitutes, their unwanted children, and escaped slaves. Pompous, self-righteous, "keep women in their place" Gerard meets Blessing when he follows his cousin, Stoddard, and tries to prevent Stoddard from marrying another woman suffragette. In keeping tabs on Stoddard and Tippy, Gerard is often thrown into Blessing's company. Gerard can't abide Blessing's unconventional ways, but when the hard times come, he can't keep himself from aiding Blessing and protecting her.To complicate matters, one of Gerard's goals is to build a racetrack in Cincinnati, diametrically opposed to everything Blessing stands for. Which appetites will Gerard feed, and can he and Blessing hope to find common ground? I very much liked this book. With inclusions of the underground railroad; the difficulties of free blacks around 1850; the women's rights movement; and the double standard society held for gentlemen as opposed to women; this book is chock full of exciting history!! There were a few times things slowed as characters thought more than acted, but overall, this is a very satisfying portrayal of the upheaval of the times. Kudos to Lyn for the historical notes afterwards. This book could be read alone, but is sweeter when it follows its predecessor.

A Word Fitly Spoken... "I don't purposefully become involved in shenanigans, Mrs. Mulberry, but you should know sometimes they just seem to find me..." So says Millie Longfellow, orphan, and an unorthodox nanny unable keep a job or keep from speaking malapropisms. How could a reader NOT WANT to get acquainted with Jen Turano's latest heroine in her novel, In Good Company?!? True to other Turano novels, there is a mixture of persons from the slums of society to those of its upper echelon. I loved being thrown back together with meddlesome society lady Abigail Hart. I had to look up Newport for myself to see if,in fact, the wealthy did live there, and discovered that summer homes for President Kennedy and others were located at that prestigious spot. As per usual, there is quite a conflict between the upper crust and their servants. What makes this story unique is the unusual pets Turano has chosen for Everett; the struggle over Thaddeus and his dresses; and the battle for Everett's heart, plus the mystery of the death of the father of Thaddeus,Elizabeth, and Rosetta. If you are a lover of children, social equality, words, humor, or mystery;this is the book for you!! I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

To Win Her Favor
by
Tamera Alexander

, June 13, 2015
"Tamera Alexander"= Excellence in Christian Historical Fiction... Long Awaited, To Win Her Favor, this second book of the Belle Meade Plantation series, will forever be a standout in my mind.Tamera Alexander, whose writing is beyond excellent, recounts the era immediately following the Civil War,when prejudice against African-Americans and Irish was strong and considered acceptable in much of southern society. The faith aspect is subtle, yet a strong influence in the characters' lives. Discussion questions to follow the novel, causing one to evaluate his/her own heart. This tome has been making its mark on hearts and hopefully will influence people to examine their own prejudices today, even as they are entertained and learning history. Maggie Linden is a young lady who dreams of racing her horse,Bourbon Belle, in the Peyton Stakes, in an effort to save the family farm. Her ailing father, however, has different plans to save the land. He arranges for her to marry an Irishman, Cullen McGrath, whom they barely know. Tensions abound as the KKK rears its ugly head, prejudice against the Irish causes many setbacks for the struggling McGraths, and the McGraths' marriage teeters. I loved how Ms. Alexander writes with such precision. She gives life even to the emotions, ambiance, and inanimate objects. A few examples are: "the tense silence a third partner in the room...' and "nails...now pulled away in rebellion." How can one not smile when reading such masterful, vibrant, writing brushstrokes? When the backstories of Kizzy's family are explained, the reader's emotions are pulled to the surface, and erupt as tears. One wants to go out and fight injustice, as it is presented in all its horrors. Yet, as one reads the book and the discussion questions, one begins to see that this book is meant to challenge modern day prejudices and injustices. Fighting softly, breaking open our hearts. Will Maggie journey from seeing her earthly father as her strong tower to viewing her husband as her strong tower to ultimately allowing the God of the universe to be her hiding place, her source of strength and strong tower? So many quotables. I will include just one here. "There will come a time when a man will have to boldly stand for what he believes or everything he holds dear will be taken from him. And those he loves." In conclusion, what a book! Don't miss it! I originally bought the ebook, but I gratefully received the paperback book from Goodreads FirstReads, Litfuse, and the author in exchange for an honest review.

Full of Exotic Locales and Dangers... "I had no sense of the perils that awaited me. Maybe I had no sense at all," writes Susan Goffard in her book, Chased by God, Stalked by Death. Indeed, Susan, a true raconteur, shares the many dangers she walks headlong into, some out of pure naivetê, others unavoidable because of the remote and exotic locations in which she and her French foreign ministry husband, Luc, live. From Laos, Arab countries, Ethiopia,Guatemala, Mexico, and even Wisconsin, near-death experiences haunt Susan or her immediate family members. Yet it takes forty years before Susan hears God's voice and realizes He is calling her through all this. Thankfully, call her God does, and Susan clearly and unashamedly shares how she met Christ as her Lord and Savior. I loved that the transformation was so real in her life, it caused those around her to desire what she had found. What a challenge to me regarding living out my faith!! If you enjoy exotic locales, slices of local life in said places, and the sense of impending peril, this is a great book. It was wonderful to see how God protected Susan when she wasn't yet aware of Him. I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Diann Mills immediately draws the reader into her world of excitement, crime lords, the FBI and subterfuge. Given that Laurel Everton has worked undercover to put Morton Wilmington in prison, imagine her surprise when her FBI bosses pair her with Wilmington, who supposedly has had a prison conversion. Will she be safe working with Wilmington, or is he out for the ultimate revenge? Is he behind the scams on the elderly, including HPD Daniel Hilton's grandparents?Who to trust, and who to trust with her heart? Race-car fast paced action, enough twists and turns to satisfy mental roller coaster riders, and an emphasis on trusting God. My kind of story. So many good quotes. Here are a few. "God works in mysterious ways we'll never understand." "I'm not on His dance card." "Yes, you are. All He wants is the opportunity to lead." About finding your value in life and following His will, whether it makes sense to others or not:"My significance is in being available for whatever's needed."..."When you realize the life forward means more to God than the past, then what you do doesn't have to make sense." Good for those who can't forgive themselves or others for the past. Our God is more concerned about which direction we're headed, then where we've been. Excellent, exciting book. Hilarious, Side-splitting, Snorting, LOL Fun!! What a hilarious, side-splitting, snorting, laughing out loud book!! Renae(she is so down to earth you feel like you know her personally)Brumbaugh, in The Breaking Point, seizes her arrows of humor and aims them at the reader's funny bone over such topics as "Deadly Weapon," "Heavenly Asparagus,""Going Coconuts,"Shamgar, as well as fear of heights, why one should be a peanut farmer,or why God plays the "God card..." Each short, witty story is followed by a spiritual lesson, always seamlessly tied to the topic at hand. One of the lessons Renae shares:"I've gone looking in the wrong places for my peace,my happiness, my self-esteem...But the whole time,I had the keys to those things right in front of my nose. And His name is God." Another nugget, after describing a closet-cleaning venture:"My mind should be a palace,a place where beautiful thoughts and valuable memories are stored. It should not be a junkyard, filled with angry memories and unforgiveness."So many passages I want to quote... but then, you wouldn't need to read the book! This is the best humorous book I've read that is also a devotional. It is just the right mixture of everyday anecdotes, humor, and clear spiritual application that will make you think hard. I'm pretty much kicking myself for possibly missing a chance to hear Renae speak a few years ago. I would give a lot to hear her now,as she talks about topics like a "gigantic, sparkly, beautifully wrapped bag of fertilizer!" Mesmerizing Time Travel Installment One... Wow!! This mesmerizing story of time travel by Amanda Tru starts out with a terrible accident that Hannah Kraeger happens across on her way up a mountain. It proceeds from there to a roaring crescendo,as my heart was racing with questions and details, and abruptly stops like a sheer drop-off. A most compelling reason to go out and buy the rest of the series, but this time, I'll be prepared for roller-coaster emotions that are brought to a sudden stop. I will be prepared. After miraculously rescuing a family on a snow-bound road, Hannah discovers that no one local knows of the accident happening that night...but an identical one took place, five years before. This was Hannah's accident. Hannah is able to track down the charming and handsome doctor who was involved in saving the family's lives, as well as the family themselves. Great connections are formed, and electricity sparks between Hannah and the doctor,Seth. Unfortunately, Seth has given up on finding his angel of mercy and is now engaged to cold, calculating Katheryn. Before Hannah can sort everything out, she time-travels again, and life becomes complicated as the reader anxiously awaits for the next disappearance of Hannah. Great, totally believable characters in an incredible situation.Good study questions at the back of the book with Scripture references for aid. Secondary characters are planted who will more than likely have their own time in this series, and I can't wait for each story to find fruition. The big question of the book seems to be, should Hannah use her knowledge of the future to change the past, and thus, the future? Not a lot of mention about God, but Seth does say he believes"God had the foreknowledge of how I was going to mess up and was big enough to handle turning my faults into something good." So we are encouraged to believe that God can take our mistakes and use them in His ultimate plan. Hurrying off to buy the rest of the series. Will Abby Find Self, Family, True Love? What to do when your fiancé fires you instead of defending you; your mother has recently died, leaving you bereft; and your questionable "best friend" decides she's moving in with her fiancé? Abby, in Brandy Heineman's first go at the fiction world, leaves Ohio to trace her relatives in Georgia. There Abby encounters a great-aunt, a creepy old house with rumors of ghosts, a good-looking young caretaker, and secrets in the family tree. Added to the mix is the former boyfriend, following Abby, unwilling to give up. The characterizations and situations are so true-to-life, it is like watching reality tv. Will Abby ever find the father she's looking for and the purpose in life? Two young men are vying for the chance to show Abby the way back to Jesus, one especially reminding me of how patiently Jesus woos the lost sheep to Himself. This was a page-turner as I anxiously wondered whether Abby would find herself, her family, and her true love. I gratefully received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Faith, Fear,Romance, and Adrenaline... Faith, fear, romance, and adrenaline all fight for supremacy in Candace Calvert's By Your Side, book one of the Crisis Team series. Calvert shows us the gritty side of foster care through Trauma care nurse Macy Wynn. Macy has learned through foster care ,..."that was the worst part. Not knowing anything for sure. Where you'd sleep, what you'd eat, who was nice...or who might want to hurt you in ways you couldn't even understand. You were never, ever sure. You hung onto hope because it was all you had, but after a while, even hope packed up and moved on. You kept your favorite things in a bag you could take with you at a moment's notice. And you only trusted yourself." Macy lives by this credo, refusing God, who allowed herself and her sister to have a childhood best forgotten, except for one foster parent. Speaking of exceptions, Macy DOES trust one person, her financial advisor, who is the closest thing to family she has. We also meet policeman Fletcher Holt. Fletcher becomes involved with the initial sniper situation where he meets Macy, and continues to try to offer her protection as uncertainty becomes the name of the game. Fletcher has his own uncertainties-the girl back home and his mother's current bout with cancer, to name a few. Fletcher's mother challenges his faith:"Now is the tough part. When you're forced to ask yourself the hard question:Do you FULLY trust God, or do you simply trust Him to keep you safe?" With heart-pounding action, themes of faith that resonate with the reader's heart, and breath-taking word pictures of Yosemite, Calvert has produced another medical miracle! The Creole Princess

Swept Away by Tides of History, Romance, and Intrigue... Beth White sweeps the reader away in this, her second novel of the Gulf Coast Chronicles. Lyse Lanier goes from dreaming about a life of excitement and a charming suitor to leading that very life, albeit fraught with danger, uncertainty, and political unrest in the early Revolutionary era. I had to put down the book several times to participate in the real world, but the world of the Creole Princess always had me stealing away, hoping the best for Lyse, whose family heritage was both respected and despised. While the Lanier name meant wealth, Lyse's father's choices had cut the family off from that wealth and brought them to poverty. As Lyse befriends the daughter of the English major who controls the fort of Mobile, she meets Don Rafael, a Spanish trader whose dandified manners hide a quick wit and daring spy. Plots and subplots abound. Balls, Battles, and battle-axes all parade through the tome. So many themes explored here. Historically, the idea that Spain played a major role in financing the American Revolution and fighting off the British in the Gulf Coast area. Emotionally, the idea of hanging onto that which is precious, believing it will return at the proper time and not giving up. Forgiving those that wrong you. Helping those less fortunate than you, made so only by circumstance of birth. Deciding to grow from hardships, rather than shrink and wilt. "...we are all buffeted by circumstances that can shape us into people of strength and character-- or make us bitter and vindictive." As for forgiveness, old Blackberry says to Scarlet,"I be God's bondslave, true enough, child. But that makes me free to love, can't nobody take that away. You a servant to hatred, and that's the bitterness slavery of all." As the tides of history turn, who will be captured by the enemy, who will escape, and who will find freedom for both body and soul? This book can stand fine on its own, but I appreciated the history of book one, and book three cannot come soon enough!! Plus, if you love history, Ms. White includes an epilogue that details more of the history of the time.

Beware the Determined Woman!! Accustomed to being stared at because of her height, Elizabeth Covington is surprised to sense people in this little Texas town they are visiting seem to be staring at her lawyer brother, instead. She is even more flabbergasted when a Texas Ranger and a sheriff arrest her brother, claiming he is an infamous bandit wanted for many cruel murders. While drawn to Ranger Rett Smith, Elizabeth is also off-put by the fact he refuses to listen to her pleas of her brother's innocence. With the moral support of another courageous young lady, Elizabeth follows every trail that might prove the mistaken identity. Finally, she decides to follow the hardest and least likely to succeed trail of all--that of Ranger Smith as he embarks on the trail of rumors of the murderer in a distant area. This is a sweet romance with lessons of learning to wait on God, giving people a second chance at our trust, listening to God and not being afraid to question the obvious. Elizabeth is shown to be a spunky, take-charge character, but one who has faith lessons to learn like many of us."She believed in God. She trusted Him even.BUT SHE TRUSTED HERSELF MORE.She wasn't keen on waiting and with God, one almost always had to wait." What a soul-selfie of most of us!! Thrilling, Chilling, Maze of a Read... A very satisfying romantic suspense by Lisa Harris, Hidden Agenda zigged and zagged as Olivia, Ivan, and Michael rush headlong to escape the cartel. Indeed, it is hard to run in a straight line when the enemy can be anyone around you. Harris does a wonderful job of setting up a dangerous situation and then throwing the reader into doubt about just who the enemy is. I kept guessing and re-guessing! This book is also about learning to trust when the going gets tough. NOT only does Olivia have to decide to trust Michael or not, but she must choose whether she can trust God, as well."Michael," says Olivia, "What do you do when something horrible happens, when fear takes hold so hard you can hardly breathe?" "All I know to do is to dig deeper until you remember that God knows exactly what's happening at this very moment. He cares, and no matter what happens, He will never leave you..." Trust. Will we trust or will we freeze when the hard times come? That said, in a sinful world, trusting God does not guarantee safety. Who makes it out of this terror alive, and who becomes collateral damage? A thrilling, chilling read!! I gratefully received this book from the author for an honest review.

Some of her topics are more about memories, changes in our lives over the decades, encouragement to find humor in life, and even asking God to provide laughter for us. Each chapter ends with a small paragraph called "From My Heart to Yours" in which Jeannette ties in a spiritual truth or sums up that subject. A couple of quotes that Jeannette herself quoted: "Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects." -- Arnold Glasgow "It is impossible for you to be angry and laugh at the same time. Anger and laughter are mutually exclusive and you have the power to choose either. -- Dr. Wayne W. Dyer This is a funny, encouraging book to read. A Powerful Book That Should be a Must Read... Cheri Swalwell tenderly gathers several stories of grief due to infertility, miscarriage, and early child loss. Many people are awkward around someone who has lost a child in these circumstances. I always wondered why a particular person didn't "just get over it." She had 6 other children and I didn't want our holiday ruined by her grief. How I wish I could have read this book years ago! What a different perspective this book causes me to have! Each story is different, and each contributor found their way to peace by a different path. Yet all had this in common: a solid faith in God, that He would see them through this hard time and walk beside them. I love that Ms. Swalwell includes a wrap-up that invites the reader to discover her source of strength. Some shareable nuggets: "Our healing took unity." "We can't hide our pain from Him. In fact, He doesn't want us to. He is relentless with His love, but He sometimes lets us have our way as we wander into painful territory." "There is no 'back to normal.' In this life, you will never be complete. Your hope lies in the next world--a world the King has promised to all His children." A powerful book that should be a must for those in grief and for those around them. For the bereaved, to see you're not alone, how to make it through. For the surrounding people--to better understand the thoughts and feelings your loved one or friend may be experiencing. I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Always on My Mind

Always in His Sight and Care... With themes of being the light of God, hope despite bad choices, forgiving, and living large with God, Susan May Warren deftly pulled me into her fourth book of the Christiansen family. No matter I had not read any of the other three. Always on My Mind gives just enough back story just as the reader needs it to be able to enjoy this story on its own. I will, however, be searching out the other three, since my appetite has been so well-whetted for more complete adventures of this imperfect, Christian family. As we meet Raina, she is emotionally hiding out from Casper, with whom she fell in love the summer before. Because of a fit of jealousy, Casper took off to the Honduras, searching for treasure. He returns to make things right with Raina, only to find her unwilling and unable to move beyond the past. Casper's brother, Darek, is uncertain about Casper's return as well. Darek is struggling to keep the family lodge running and profitable. He needs Casper to be reliable this time. In the meantime, Darek puts all he has into the lodge...but will it cost him his son and new wife as well? John, the patriarch, addresses Casper's need to discover treasure:"...there is no life bigger than the one lived, every day, in awe of God. God showing up in our lives to love us despite ourselves. That is a treasure we can find every single day." And again John says, "If what we call love doesn't take us beyond ourselves, require more of us than we ever dreamed, then it's not the unconditional, divine love God has for us. God's love is not cautious, not wise, not sensible, and not remotely conservative. In fact, loving another person the way God loves them is the greatest adventure we can have...the greatest treasure you can find." Always on My Mind is more than a romance or even a family saga. It is a book that will stay on my mind, reminding me God always has us in His sights and care! Jen Turano. The author's name says "grab it up!" Turano's name is synonymous with historical fiction with a star-crossed couple falling in love, yet having to overcome their great aversions to what they perceive the other person to be. While Oliver easily falls for Harriet, a former hatmaker, Harriet has trouble fitting into his wealthy, genteel world. Typical of a Turano character, Harriet is long on empathy but short on poise, which makes for some wonderful scenes!Harriet loves Oliver, but will she be able to see him as being more than a rich snob who has no clue of the struggle of the lower class with which Harriet identifies? The supporting characters deserved Oscars in this book. I absolutely fell in love with selfless Abigail and doting Archibald. Lucetta and Millie help provide interest and comic relief, and Jane proves to be a tour de force. I truly wished I were back in those times and had a chance to live with Abigail, she seemed so real and so wonderfully kind. All in all, a wonderful, feel-good read not to be missed. End of World Techno-Thriller!! If no one else can see it, then the horrifying object's not real, right? This is Elijah' struggle in Unbound by JB Simmons. Elijah has strange and terrifying dreams of the end of the world. Applying to be part of the elite International Security Organization, he meets up with Naomi, a part of an underground cult. Will Elijah's curiosity and growing love for Naomi cause him to join her side as the ominous forces use a form of high technology to track, train, and control those around them?As I hurtled like a rocket through this fast-moving tale, it was hard not to feel like a confused pinball, being knocked by events on all sides, as I, the reader, desperately tried to figure out who was on which side in order to what? warn Elijah? rewrite the story so it would come out all roses for him? Unfortunately, I, like Eli,was subject to the darker forces the writer had in mind. Always the tension. Maybe Elijah and his forces would come out the victors. However, in the back of the mind is the fact that it is hard to be a victor without Jesus Christ, and Elijah is not ready to make that decision. Hence the even greater anxiety created for both readers and characters. Quotable: "'Technology is a cover up...' "It makes the world faster, more efficient, more open, but better? In some ways, yes, but it obscures what matters most:the soul. anyone can play god with a microchip in the head. You spend enough time playing god and you forget there's a real God up there.'" Even though our society doesn't have as much technology as is in the book, this statement could still be true of us as people who think we have so much knowledge available to us now. We think we're invincible, the masters of our fate. Of course, this is first in a series. Happily, the second is due out any day, and mine is on pre-order. Buy them both and be further ahead in the game. Read Revelation while you're at it, and see if you agree with JB's portrayal of end times. It certainly is breathtaking! Deadly Echoes

What a satisfying story Nancy Mehl has penned in Deadly Echoes, book 2 of the Finding Sanctuary series! The book stands well by itself; I haven't read book 1, but had no trouble following the plot line and characters. Mehl uses ordinary, every day characters in her suspense novels, making them appealing and believable. I loved the emotions evoked by different characters. One of the main themes, that God has made us EACH in His image, and we don't need to compare ourselves to others, is very timely for me. Sarah, a young teacher, finds herself the guardian of her young niece after Sarah's sister is murdered. While Sarah sees similarities between her sister's death and that of their parents' almost 20 years ago, she has trouble convincing the Kansas City police department to view the cases as related. Can Paul, a local officer, help her sort through the puzzle, or would safety lie in leaving the past behind? Favorite quote: '"This was just a building...nothing more than a shell. What you loved in this house is still inside you. Your mother isn't here," I said, pointing at the ruined structure."She's in here." I put my hand over my heart. "And here." I reached over and lightly touched her chest.' Looking forward with eager anticipation to book 3! I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Beyond All Dreams

My Brain was Stimulated and Tickled... What a privilege to read Elizabeth Camden's novel, Beyond All Dreams. I enjoyed the budding romance between solid, prim research librarian Anna O'Brien and rich,self-assured Congressman Luke Callahan. The two are so opposite, but find a common quest. In the end, can they trust God to lead them to complete each other, or should they chalk up the relationship to one more mistake?(Which by the way, Luke has a lot to say about making mistakes!!) This was a multi-leveled story and I enjoyed reading it as such. One part of me was anxious to see if Anna discovers what truly happened to the Culpeper and her father; the other side of me was wide alert, taking in the craftsmanship of the author. My brain was stimulated and tickled by her writing style, a marriage of history/story to picturesque wording. One of example of such: "I was like an unlit match and suddenly you were there and everything flared to life." (SIGH!!) One more quotable: "We are all beautiful but broken people. Jesus forgives us, even when we don't deserve it. That's a pretty good reason to be forgiving." Don't we all need reminders like that! Old Fashioned

Christian fiction-- From Frat Man to Old Fashioned... What causes Clay,a young man who has a raunchy past, to turn his back on that past and to live by a totally unusual set of rules regarding women? What hurt has caused Amber to feel like she is unlovable and unable to hold a man's attention permanently? Amber is impulsive, Clay is very strict. Can these two acknowledge their growing attraction and make it work, or will their great differences keep them apart? Some parts of this story made me uncomfortable. However, the underlying theme that God can overcome our pasts and people's differences and fears surpasses my discomfort. I am reminded that our God is a God of mercy and grace and second chances. This story beautifully illustrates that point. I would recommend this book for mature readers, including older teens as appropriate. Those Who Turned the World Upside Down... The Reformation has started, the country of England has broken with the Catholic Church, and Henry VIII has proclaimed himself head of the Church of England. The Anglicans, having gotten freedom of religion from the Catholics, refuse to grant it to others. It is a dangerous time to live, and expressing any opinions, religious or political, is just cause for death. We are introduced to Pacificus, a monk at what appears to be an obscure abbey. An Anabaptist couple is arrested for refusing to acknowledge the king's sovereignty of faith. Pacificus is given charge of the four young children. There is more excitement, more murder and gore, more intrigue, and more medieval pageantry wrapped up in this story of faith and ideology than a first look would have one believe. The story is initially a little hard to get into, but well worth the effort for history lovers and people interested in the background of the Anabaptists and the terrible turmoil in England during the reign of Henry VIII. I learned more about Cromwell and and a few others than I would have in a history class. Although this is an incredible book of faith, some readers will want to know that the "D" word and the "h" word are used some. The wonderful part of the book is seeing Pacificus wonder, muse, and pray his way through events until his adopted name finally fits him. Some favorite quotes: "He sits, as does the abbey-and everything else-on a sandbank between two rivers." "Surely Luther's faith and Calvin's grace will populate heaven with scoundrels? Can a man do nothing to earn salvation? Must we all come like cowards, beggars, and lepers?" I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Thriller Set in Paradise... If you're looking for a book that flips quickly from the serene, white beaches and aquamarine waters of St. Croix featuring warm, fuzzy relationships; to sudden, in-your-face danger around every corner," be prepared to meet your maker" excitement, trusting nobody; THIS is the story for you!! Michael, a disillusioned Seal, retires to St. Croix, where he meets Elise, an artist and musician. Elise and her friends want to restore the old and once grand theater on the island, but it appears that there may be a costly price tag on the theater's restoration. Michael takes a job as a scuba instructor and also meets the local parish priests, both adding local color and interesting characters to the tale. Michael's past comes back to haunt him in several ways. First, his former boss and plus his buddy visit and persuade Michael to take occasional assignments as he is needed. Therein lies the danger. However, one rescue leads him to a sinister link to a group harvesting human organs and to the past he was trying to forget. Somehow, the evil grows and expands and reaches its claws into the island itself. It will not disappear until it all is unraveled. Just as that appears to be about to happen, nature steps in and muddies the murky mystery further. As I happily reached the end of the book with a satisfied sigh, I read the preview for book two. Alas, I am in anxious knots all over again!! Tight, intense writing, beautifully descriptive but not flowery, this is a book for both men and women! Great job, PeggySue!! Somehow, Christmas Will Come

Smiles, Tears, Kleenex, and Sighs... This wonderful Hallmark-type book put me in the mind-set of playing a Nintendo or computer game where the objects are coming at the main figure and the figure does't know where or when the objects are coming, but he needs to be ready to jump or fight at a minute's notice. Indeed, after Molly Dugan moves to Vegas to be with her recently widowed brother,Patrick, and his six-year-old daughter, Bethany, life swirls out of Molly's control. She and Jessie, Patrick's mother-in-law, are left scrambling to put the pieces back together and carry on for themselves and Bethany as well, before she is lost in the miasma of denial and irreparable hurt. Fortunately, Patrick's firefighter buddy Trace, who is a strong believer and a long-standing family friend, is quick to step up to offer help. I liked the story in general. It was a feel good tale, to be true, but after so much pain, wouldn't anyone wish someone in that position a little happiness? I liked the way Ms. Phifer had little Bethany talk... almost grown-up, yet having trouble with a few words, which made her real and adorable..."Okay, Daddy. I unnerstand, and I'm proud that you perteck the crazy people out there." Once I read the afterwards, I felt like Ms. Phifer had included part of her life in the book. No wonder some of the sad part was so realistic! Given the nature of the book, I certainly would have liked to have seen more of an emphasis placed on the characters recognizing God's hand in their lives, or their conversations about Him that would have brought them comfort. This book reads like it was made to be a Hallmark movie, and I hope that indeed Hallmark will buy the rights! I'm ready to see it as well as read it! I was given this book by bookfun.org and am not required to write a positive review.

Secret of Pembrooke Park

One for the Keeper Shelf!! I just recently read a quote to the effect that a good book is one that when you get to the last chapter, you read slowly because you're sorry the book is at an end. This could truly be said about the characters that Julie Klassen creates in The Secret of Pembrooke Park. I found myself easily identifying with Abigail, feeling her pain when the family loses their fortune and then moves to a mysterious manor. William Chapman, the curate, and Gilbert Scott, the architect make for strong opposing suitors. Leah is a case study with her fears and secrecy. Speaking of secrets. I would almost contend the book is misnamed. There is not ONE, but MULTIPLE, secrets that are a part of Pembrooke Park's history. Will Abigail discover what they are before she and her family are run off the property or hurt or killed? The book starts a little slow, but once the stage is set and the action commences, that slowness is easily forgiven. A couple of quotes: "One might open the book idly, but one never knows what treasure one might find." -William Chapman about the Bible "Good from bad, God excels at that." -William This is a story of fear, of rumors, of love over-protecting, and love releasing and of choosing to live by faith. This is one for the Keeper Shelf!! I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Totally Made Me Smile!! Jennings has an artist's touch with words. I not only loved the storyline of A Most Inconvenient Marriage, but Jennings's masterful manipulation of the English language made me smile from ear to ear. Some favorite lines, in a book abounding with pithy sayings: "...tears that seemed caught in his throat..." "Know your heart before you give it away." "Getting yourself declared deceased does come with consequences. " And my true favorite, meant as a double entendre, "Nobody puts up with your stink like family!" The story was for me, just icing on the cake. Abigail Stuart travels to the backwoods Ozarks as the widow of recently deceased Jeremiah Calhoun. Welcomed with open arms by Ma Calhoun, Jeremiah's terminally ill sister is an insufferable pain. Just as Abigail begins to manage the Calhoun horse farm for her erstwhile husband, the REAL Jeremiah Calhoun arrives home and the reader's fun begins in earnest! Themes of trust, honesty, and forgiveness run strong in this volume. Don't miss this Civil War gem! ! I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for an honest review.

Brickmaker's Bride

Brickmakers Ewan McKay and his uncle Hugh Crothers consider buying the brickyard belonging to Laura Woodfield's deceased father. Little do they know that it will not be a "clean sale." Laura, who as a young deb, should only concern herself with social niceties, will retain a keen interest in the performance and success of the brickyard. Add integrity, laziness, greed, shameless manipulation, trust in God, caring for the poor, political aspirations and societal expectations together; and you get a turbulent look at the re-establishment of a brick-making business. Will it succeed or fail? Given the mix of the characters' personalities, the reader is apt to want the business to do both! Miller has done a tremendous amount of homework to be able to describe the brickmaking process so meticulously. At times, it seemed a lot of detail to take in. I absolutely loved the ridiculous relationship between Uncle Hugh and his ultra-controlling wife, Maggie. Tragic to see in real life, it was rather fun to read about. To me, the characters in this book give it life and breath, whether we think about the brickmakers who were careless and had to be retrained, politically inclined Winston, or reserved Kathleen with her struggles against her sister. A book for the keeper shelves. I won this book in a drawing at bookfun.org. in exchange for an honest review.

The Long Road Home Romance Collection: Four Romances with an Enduring Pioneer Spirit
by

The beauty of this book is the ability of the authors to make the reader identify with the heroines. I felt like I was hurting with Mandy in "The Long Road Home" as she realizes her husband has deserted her, just as she discovers their much wanted child is coming. I could feel and smell the fear of Deidre, the runaway slave, caught at the barn. I loved the next book, "On the Wings of Grace," because it takes up with some of the undesirable characters of book one, and yet shows how some Christians truly loved these "soiled doves" into Heaven's arms and showed them their true worth in God's eyes. Book three, "Where Two Agree," doubles back and tells more of the story of Diedre's lost husband, who is somewhere on a plantation in the deep South. Jeremiah has endured some horrible times, but finally God begins to move His chess pieces in the game of life to effect a wonderful ending for this little family. Book four was rather unconnected, but was a pioneer woman, with the same indomitable spirit. Ms. Mitchum's character, "Rika," is upset at having to leave Germany for the wasteland of America and to lose her great musical school future as well. First she pouts at every opportunity, then she is forced to grow up and see her sister and mother through horrors unimaginable to us today. Will she survive and come out better or will she wilt and become bitter? Who will she choose to stand beside her in this new wilderness? All of these stories give glory to God for directing the future, even when it is bleak and unyielding. Characters learn to trust God and His wisdom rather than lean on their own understandings. It is clear, that one can, with God's help, decide how one will view life and what life deals to him/her. If you like books of the frontier/and or slavery issues, this could be the book for you!

Small towns can be murder. Tony Jackson, small business CFO and big-time gambler, dies in Sheriff Ben Logan's arms. But not before hinting he knows who shot Ben's sheriff father and making Ben promise to protect Tony's beautiful sister, Dr. Leigh Somerall. What an exciting ride this story is! A missing pen drive, stolen gun parts, a love triangle, secrets, and main characters constantly besieged by dangers (you'll have to read the book to see the varied kinds)! Wow! I love how faith plays a prominent part in resolving the personal issues of the main characters, though it takes them a long time to do so. The Bible talks about working out our own salvation with fear and trembling. I also love the use of an I-Pad in the story in a special way! One parting quotable, so true..."people are going to believe what they want to. Truth doesn't matter-- they'll go with what they think they see every time." (Deputy Wade Hatcher) This may be book two in the series, but it stands alone quite well. However, I for one am going hunting for book one and eventually book three!! Dreaming on Daisies

Young Leah Carlson is saddled with running the ranch of her increasingly ne'er-do-well father, Charlie Pape. Heart-sick over his wife's death years before, Charlie visits the saloon and leaves more and more of the day-to-day running of the ranch to Leah and the ranch foreman. Charlie's son,and Leah's brother,Tom, lights out for places unknown as soon as he is able. With Charlie's continued drinking and gambling, the ranch is soon in dire straights. Steven Harding, a bank teller, and brother of Beth (from Wishing on Buttercups, the previous book),is unable to extend a bank loan. He then thinks to lend aid by renting a room at the ranch and helping with the ranch chores. This way he can also be close to Leah, of whom he is becoming fond. Can Leah and Steven set aside their pasts and their hurts enough to work together to build each other's dreams, or will their dreams remain as unstable as a mine, full of treasure, but always in danger of explosion? This is the third full-length book in the Love Blossoms in Oregon series by Miralee Ferrell. Set in the 1880's in Oregon, the book grabs your attention because the characters grapple with issues that are troublesome today: betrayal, deceit, desertion, inability to trust, pride, sharp tongue, forgiveness, sibling rivalry for parent affection, etc. Miralee uses skillful word pictures, fun characters, well-timed humor, and beautiful prose to present her enduring stories of love and the Old West. Not to be missed! Although this is the third in a series, fourth if you count the novella, Forget Me Not, it stands alone well. I was provided an advance copy of this book by the author in exchange for a review.
