Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Loving Che
by
Ana Menndez

I really wanted to love this book, and I did like how the author humanized (and sexualized) Che, but other than that it read a bit like a bad romance novel. The main character and the mother she was learning about weren't that interesting as characters, and the author used very little of Cuba's rich political history as material. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I think this book could have been a lot better!

The Robber Bride
by
Margaret Atwood

This is a must read for any Atwood fan. Atwood deftly demonstrates the power of female friendships, both for the good and the bad. Her character Zenia is someone we all know and can identify with, and Atwood skillfully manipulates both her readers' anger and sympathies through Zenia's relationship with the other three main characters. You won't be able to put this book down!

Prayer For Owen Meany
by
John Irving

This is simply one of the best books I've ever read. Not only does Irving perform his usual magic, creating an entire world that can't help but suck you in, but he also gives us his greatest character--Owen Meany. I even had to put the book down at one point because I was reading it in public and was about to burst into tears! This is a can't-miss for any Irving fan, and a great introduction to his work for anyone who is unfamiliar with it.
