Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Flora is a girl I so wish I'd met when I was a pre-teen. She's brave, she's bold, her mother is the head of the army, her father is rather wimpy, her best friend worries more about his appearance than any girl--and Flora never for a second has a doubt that she can do anything she wants! She has adventures, she faces dangers, she thinks for herself. I am long past my teen-aged years, but I'm collecting these books in hopes of either reading them to my grandchildren or passing them along to friends with pre-teen daughters. Ah, Flora--a Girl of Spirit indeed. If you miss Harry Potter, then you must meet Flora!

I finished it only because it was so short and I was able to skim through the first half. The narrative voice was "off"; Jack sounded older or younger depending on the author's needs. It could have been much better--perhaps even as a short story--and I frankly do not understand what the fuss is about.
