Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Tenant Of Wildfell Hall
by
Anne Bronte

, September 01, 2015
If you're anything like me, you may have been calling yourself a huge fan of the Brontes for years without ever having read anything written by Anne. I love a good love story, so I chose to start with "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" instead of the better-known "Agnes Grey" based on the book descriptions. The book starts in the point of view of Gilbert Markham, who lives in a small community where everyone knows everybody else's business. When a mysterious widow, Helen Graham, moves into the nearby Wildfell Hall with her young son, Gilbert becomes intrigued by her and slowly gets to know her. But we only begin learning about Helen's mysterious past when we get to read her diary of the past several years. Anne Bronte is adept at using two very different voices as the story is narrated first by Gilbert and then by Helen. The beginning sort of reminded me of a Jane Austen book since Gilbert was observing and remarking upon his various neighbors and acquaintances, many of whom are shallow and gossipy. Helen's diary feels more like Charlotte and Emily's books in that Helen is relatively secluded and everything is a bit more dreary. If you're looking for a feminist classic and some romance, this is a great pick!

The Last Girl

This was my favorite book in the Maeve Kerrigan series so far!! And since I gave the first two 5 stars as well, that's saying something. There were interesting developments with characters from previous books (so definitely start with the first one, "The Burning"), and I started to like reading about Maeve and Josh Derwent being partners (even if his personality leaves something to be desired). I thought this was the most intriguing mystery so far, and although I did predict whodunit, I definitely missed most of the why. I am way too invested in Maeve's love life and can't wait to find out what happens in book 4...

Dark Tide A Novel
by
Elizabeth Haynes
Katrina Medoff
, August 19, 2015
This is one of Elizabeth Haynes' standalone suspense novels. I was first introduced to this author by reading her first book, "Into the Darkest Corner," which I loved. "Dark Tide" is also a page-turner. Genevieve financed her dream of living on a houseboat by supplementing her sales job with a gig as a dancer at a gentlemen's club, and--like with "Into the Darkest Corner"--nothing seems all that dangerous until it's too late to escape from. On the night of Genevieve's housewarming party for her new boat, a body washes up beside the boat, and Genevieve recognizes the victim as another dancer from the gentlemen's club. Now, Genevieve may also be in danger, because she's hiding secrets that even she doesn't fully understand.

The Kill
by
Jane Casey

I started reading Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series this summer and have already gotten five of my friends to read it, too. "The Kill" is the fifth book in the series and it definitely doesn't disappoint; every book in the series is just as strong (or stronger) than the previous one. Definitely start with the first book, "The Burning," because Maeve's personal life is just as important as the mysteries, and you don't want to start in the middle!
