Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Second Wind A Sunfish Sailor an Island & the Voyage That Brought a Family Together
by
Nathaniel Philbrick

, June 25, 2018
Ok. I will admit that the lure of this book was my having lived on Nantucket for many years as well as a love for Nathaniel Philbrick’s writing. I was not disappointed by this light yet enlightening read. He describes a Nantucket that few see and interjects interesting facts about its history as a very important whaling port. You needn’t have ever gone there to enjoy this book. His family dynamics provide an interesting backdrop to his obsession, my word not his, to get back in his sunfish that is overgrown with ivy and mildew. Never say never! Summer is the perfect time to read this book!

The Long Haul: A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road
by
Finn Murphy

This is a satisfying entertaining read. I heard Finn interviewed on Fresh Air and was intrigued by the premise of being a long haul truck driver and the stories he shared. The book did not disappoint and I learned a lot about a sector of society from which we rarely hear. This is a page turner! Enjoy!

Immerse yourself in an informative, exciting, dramatic telling of a now obscure part of American slavery and the Civil War. Who knew that such a brave intelligent charismatic black man existed? This well-written book deserves to be read by all Americans.

Speck in the Sea A Story of Survival & Rescue
by
John Aldridge, Anthony Sosinski

Run, don't walk, to Powells Bookstore and grab this book. It will consume your time until you are finished reading it. Along the way you will learn some interesting, wonderful, disturbing and amazing things about the world of small town fishing and rescue operations that grip the lives of families and friends. I am not giving away the plot. It is a given when the book begins. Be prepared to get inside the heads of people who risk life and limb to provide ocean fish for us. Also, what is entailed in an ocean search and rescue. Excellent!

Leaving Blythe River
by
Catherine Ryan Hyde

, April 30, 2017
Young Ethan's world is torn apart when his father selfishly chooses between his family and his own needs. The father moves from New York City to a remote cabin in tiny Blythe River. Ethan is happy in the city and has no interes in ever seeing his dad again. Life doesn't always work out as planned and his mother sends him to live with his father while she cares for her dying mother. This is when the story really begins and we meet some crusty but ultimately wise characters who influence Ethan and the reader as well. There are many pearls of wisdom by the author Catherine Ryan Hyde, of Pay It Forward fame. She tells a fine tale for both young adults and adults. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and human interest stories.

A Piece of the World
by
Christina Baker Kline

If you are a fan of Andrew Wyeth, you are likely familiar with his iconic painting "Christina's World". The woman in the painting was very much a part of Wyeth's life and Christina Baker Kline, the author of Orphan Train, has woven a fictionalized account of this time. Kline is a marvelous writer and the subject is an interesting one. We are let into a world of starkness and beauty. Christina Olson allowed Wyeth to use the third floor of the family house to hone his craft. I had a copy of The Art of Andrew Wyeth on hand as I read this book as a reference. I recommend it.

What the Robin Knows
by
Jon Young

Whether you are a casual observer or hard-core birder, you will find so much in this book that will change the way you listen to, observe and understand birds and what they are telling us. For instance, each bird that signals an alarm alerts other types of birds and animals around it. The forest can become silent as the predator, a cat perhaps, passes through. Danger gone and the sounds start again. It seems obvious in retrospect! The author has spent many hours in one place learning the behavior and habits of the birds within a certain radius. The power of observation is revealed to all of us to enjoy and learn about our 2-legged cohabiters in the woods and in the city. There is a companion site on-line that helps with bird sounds and behaviors. Open up your world to a whole other one out there!

Dinner with Buddha
by
Roland Merullo
morganjess62
, July 10, 2015
Along with being a joyful, entertaining, clever, educational read, this book is by a wonderful author who has also written Breakfast With Buddha and Golfing With Buddha. All three are delightful in their own right and Roland Merullo is an author who draws me to his works like a magnet. This book will take you on a journey across a lot of America to sites known and unknown. Merullo will take you to places within yourself as yet unexplored along the way. Enjoy the ride!
