Five Wishes of Mr Murray McBride
by
Joe Siple
Felicia Allen
, June 18, 2018
Mr. Mcbride is a 100-year-old man that is tired of living, that is until he meets 10-year-old Jason. Moved by the fact that Jason has a terminal heart condition and a list of things he wants to do before he dies, Mr. Mcbride makes it his mission to grant them. The interactions between the two had me laughing out loud through a lot of the book. The ending had an unexpected twist that ripped out my heart but somehow put it back in again. This is definitely a book I would read over and over again. Make sure you have tissues handy when you read this.

Oddling Prince

Before I post the review, let me start by saying that I NEVER buy books brand new. Sure I get them as gifts, but it has to be an amazing, earth-shaking, unbelievably good book that I will read several times (which is also odd for me) for me to buy it brand new. This one is one of the ones that I did. This book was written in a style that I felt like I was reading some ancient fairy tale from long ago. It had a cozy, comforting feel about it. You actually felt the emotions that the characters felt whether it was the joy of long lost brothers or the heartbreak of a fathers unrequited love. At times, you can almost see the landscape experience the other senses of the characters. It was unique in the storyline, characters, conflicts and everything else. I can't find one thing to compare this book against. Five stars are not enough. This is storyline is like nothing I have ever read before. The characters are well written, I love the period-style language the author used to write the entire book. This book had me hooked within the first few pages and ended by leaving me smiling. This could easily be a modern classic.

This is an amazing retelling of the Grimm fairy tale "Bearskin". The author did an amazing job capturing details for the time period this book is set in. She is truly a gifted storyteller. This book is another one that I am going to buy new. This is a book that I will be buying brand new. I will definitely be re-reading this book over and over.

Robin Hood's Dawn
by
Olivia Longueville and J. C. Plummer
Felicia Allen
, May 17, 2018
Have you ever wondered how Robin Hood became who he was? Or why Robin of Loxley was called Robin Hood? How about how Will Scarlet got his name? This book answers those questions and many more. This story starts when Robin Hood's father was a soldier under King Henry and continues through his time fighting for the crusade. It tells the tale of him defying the sheriff, his love for Marion, and slowly adds all of my favorite Robin Hood characters (although Tuck doesn't come in until the end). This also shows a side of Robin Hood that no other retelling has shown. In this one, Robin Hood is mischievous and likes to banter playfully with Marion and irritate the sheriff and his men. He is described as impish and boy-like with his pranks. I absolutely love this story and can't wait until the second part of the trilogy. Another plus to this book is there is a table, in the beginning, describing lineages of the different characters, pictures of the coat of arms, and at the end is a dictionary for period specific terminology.

Last Suppers
by
Mandy Mikulencak
Felicia Allen
, May 17, 2018
I love reading books that leave me with a feeling of contentment when finished. This one definitely has that. There are three different things going on in this book. The main part is Ginny's present-day life. Her father was murdered when she was 8. Now an adult, she is in love with his best friend and working in the prison kitchen. The second part is slowly uncovering the truth behind her father's murder. The third is a few journal type entries from various characters from the story. The historical aspect of this book is about the KKK and the injustices done to black people and how prisoners were treated during the 50's. Ginny breaks the rules to serve the death row prisoners their last meal. Along the way the two main sections of the story are told. At the very end are recipes from some of the suppers that she made and a book group discussion guide which I thought were really neat bonuses.

Libby and Stella have been friends their entire life. When Stella's mother passes, she tells her about a family grudge that started the end of WWII. Stella turns on Libby. Libby is a people pleased that would rather let people take advantage of her than stick up for herself. After Stella turns on her she starts searching for answers. In the process, she learns to set boundaries and rekindles her family. This was a really great book and a fast read that was hard to put down.

Curiouser and Curiouser: Steampunk Alice in Wonderland
by
Melanie Karsak
Felicia Allen

This book was amazing! It had all of my favorite elements of steampunk: the clothing, the machines and the gears and clockwork animals and gadgets. I want the hat that the Hatter created with the clockwork butterfly! The other part that I thought was done really well was the Crystal Palace. The depth of descriptions the author used, you could believe that such a place existed. Then the Red Queen was the perfect villain. Overall this was one of the best retellings of Alice in Wonderland that I have ever read. I love how the author took all of the characters and made them part of this underground crime ring.

Murder on a Midsummer Night
by
Kerry Greenwood

Miss Fisher finds herself in the middle of two intense cases. Luckily with the help of Jack, Dot, and Lin she is able to solve them both. I love the time period that these books are set in, and the author describes it in such a way that it is easy to see. I love the cast of supporting characters that add humor and help make the story amazing.

Be Still the Water

This is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a while. The author writes and describes everything so well. You feel every emotion and you can visualize all of the scenery and people. As far as the overall aesthetic of the story, it reminds me of an Icelandic Little House on the Prairie.People going out of their way to help each other, kids growing up and being friends and later marrying. There is also a wonderful tear inducing twist at the end that I never saw coming. This is definitely a must read again book.

Lady Jayne Disappears
by
Joanna Davidson Politano

, November 18, 2017
There are no words to describe this book. Magical, amazing, mysterious are only a few I can think of. Not only is the main character thrown into a situation that most people would collapse, she is also tasked with solving the mystery of who Lady Jayne was and what happened to her. The ending was completely unexpected and pleasantly surprising. It is a book that leaves you with that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Ready Player One
by
Ernest Cline
Felicia Allen
, August 25, 2017
I loved this book! The world Ernest Cline created for this book is completely unique. I have never read anything like this before. The characters are easy to relate to and funny. There is tons of adventure and parts that keep you on the edge of your seat. I found myself trying to figure out the clues as the characters tried. I love the research done to keep up with the 80's decade to create an almost National Treasure in space type adventure.

Prague Sonata
by
Bradford Morrow
Felicia Allen
, August 13, 2017
I received an uncorrected proof of this books as part of a goodreads.com giveaway. Below is my honest opinion. This is one of those books that you wish was a real story. I wish I could hear the sonata described and feel the emotion that it stirred. I love books that, even though leaves some questions, make you feel that the characters will be ok. Otylie's father gave her a music manuscript before he died in WWI. She hung onto it through the years and when the Nazi's invaded Prague, she protected it the only way she knew how. She split it up. She kept the first part, the second she gave to her trusted friend, and the third she gave to her husband that was part of the Czech resistance. Meta meets Irena on her 30th birthday. Irena gave Meta the middle piece of the Sonata and asked her to find the pieces and make it whole. Meta accepted the quest. In her quest to reunite the three pieces of the sonata, she meets new friends, finds new love, and finds out who she really is. As she travels, she comes to know and love the people involved in the protection of the sonata.

A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy
by
Sue Klebold
Felicia Allen
, August 08, 2017
I admire the courage and the strength it to Sue Klebold to write this books. Her raw emotions brought you along an emotional roller coaster of complete shock and devastation to a path of recover, acceptance and healing. She doesn't use this book to smear the names of anyone or try to take the blame from her son or even excuse his actions. Not only is this her story, it is also advice. She offers advice on when to get help, when to push for more info, and not just assume every outburst is normal teen behavior.

Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop

, July 30, 2017
An amazing story filled with a colorful cast of characters. This book almost makes me wish that I could have known each and every one of the characters. You laugh, you cry, and you are involved with each and every one of them. This book gets you more involved and delves deeper into the lives of the characters than the movie allows. This book leaves you with an amazing feeling and a satisfied smile as you read the last page.

This is the first story featuring Ian. The book is told from his point of view. The Doctor lands the TARDIS on Skaros and helps the Thal people defeat the Daleks. I think out of the three Dr. Who books I have read, this one is my favorite. It is action packed with a full cast of amazing characters.

Marco Polo Doctor Who 94
by
John Lucarotti

, July 29, 2017
The Doctor and his companions travel back to the year 1296 and meet Marco Polo. Marco seizes the TARDIS as a gift for Kublai Khan with the hopes of returning home to Venice. They all travel with Marco to the summer palace accompanied by a Chinese Official's daughter and a warlord with dubious motives. All along the way, the Doctor and companions stop several attacks on the camps, and prevent Kublai's death. For this one, I loved the history aspect of it. I like the Doctor Who series because it is not just Aliens.

The year is 2164 and the Daleks have invaded earth. They have robotized human beings to be their army. The Daleks and the Robomen have captured the human race and forced them to work in the mines. When the Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara land, London has been destroyed. They join up with a team of freedom fighters to save Earth. I love the book series as much as the TV show. This book is just as detailed and exciting. It contains, humor, drama, romance, and of course adventure. The book is a very quick read with it only being 142 pages, but it leaves you feeling satisfied.

Ove is a grumpy old man that is very particular about how things should be done. He believes in principles and that everything is black and white. After loosing his wife to cancer, Ove is alone. He resolves to get his affairs in order and end his own life. Through several interrupted attempts, various neighbors and a stray cat, Ove's life regains its meaning. The supporting characters are very well written, and Ove is a man that reminds me a lot of my grandfather. This is a must read for anyone.
