Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Rose City Heist A True Crime Portland Tale of Sex Gravy Jewelry & Almost Rock & Roll

An absolutely true tale of mischief and mayhem, and probably the best account of a hellacious hangover I've ever seen in print. You'll meet interesting characters aplenty, and get a glimpse of a grayer, grittier version of Portland, that feels like an old photograph of that time in your life you reminisce about but wouldn't necessarily want to revisit. This is one of my favorite recent reads, for sure.

Of Walking in Rain
by
Matt Love

, April 09, 2016
As a native Oregonian, the presence and passion of Rain is an inevitability that is both irksome and comforting, and if you fight it, you'll only make yourself more miserable. I always loved rain, and when I lived in a rain-deprived state, I missed it and relished the scant times we'd be blessed with liquid manna. Once back in Oregon, it quickly became a regular part of life again. A sharp turn of events right at the beginning of last winter, however, had me cursing Rain, and its cousins Cold, Dreary, and Gray by the time we got through New Year's. Now in April, with a little distance between us, me and Rain, and a few sunny days to build up the feel-good, I heartily consumed Love's treatise on Rain. By the end, I was willing to give it another shot. Of Walking in Rain is a personal journey, social and emotional exploration, and homegrown honest tribute to the cleansing, sensual, spiritual, and invigorating spirit of Rain.
