Superior Death
by
Nevada Barr

Anna Pigeon, park ranger and accidental sleuth, moves from the high desert of Texas (first novel in the series, Track of the Cat) to Isle Royal National Park, a watery island park in the Great Lakes. The novel is beautifully claustrophobic as a new body is found in an old shipwreck and Anna is left to dive down to the cold depths of Lake Superior to unravel the mystery. Nevada Barr furthers the development of her complex heroine significantly, all the while explosing us to the strange wild beauty of this national park. Barr does not let anyone off the hook here. A host of suspects - rangers, visiting scientists, concession workers - all have reasons to be implicated, but the final nerve-shattering truth is guaranteed to leave you gasping for breath. You can fall in love with Anna Pigeon in this book... smart, capable and sexy, Anna is the ranger we all want with us on a hike (or in case we need revenge). A Superior Death is brutal and sophisticated mystery... well worth reading.

Track of the Cat

Nevada Barr introduces her exquisite and complex character, park ranger Anna Pigeon, in this tense and thrilling mystery. Set in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in western Texas, Barr's descriptions of place are pivotal in this book as in her remaining series. The mystery here is a nerve-tacking page-turner - with a mutilated park ranger, an implicated wildcat and a host of human suspects. And the world in which the mystery takes place is excellently drawn and never dull. Anna Pigeon is a character that we grow to love and deeply respect and the National Park System is a great background in which to explore her character. Cynical and idealistic at the same time, Anna Pigeon is driven and open-eyed and the danger to her life and well-being is real and brutal here. Barr understands how dark the wide, wild world really is and she plays it brilliantly. Track of the Cat is a first-class nail-biter.
