Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Void Star

Always interesting to see SF written by someone from 'outside' the usual channels - Void Star owes a lot to William Gibson in terms of style and theme, but stands on its own merits. The ending is a bit muted, but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit.

2312
by
Kim Stanley Robinson

2312 is a return to some of Robinson's Big Themes - environmental, economic, and social. Great characters (though I found Swan, the protagonist, a little hard to warm up to, which may of course be intentional), and even a sort of detective story add to the enjoyment. Also doesn't appear to be the beginning of some sort of multi-volume epic (making it more like Years of Rice and Salt, say, that the Mars Trilogy), though nothing about its resolution would prevent that. Well worth reading.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe

What could be a cocky, overly-self-conscious literary homage to pulp SF is instead both funny and ultimately quite moving. Well worth a read.

For the Win
by
Cory Doctorow

Another great read from Mr. Doctorow, FTW is quite serious (both in subject and tone) for a Young Adult novel. But it moves at a breathtaking pace, and the overall message is an important one, so I have been recommending it left and right, to anyone over the age of 13. Absolutely worth your time.

Against A Dark Background
by
Iain Banks
Tobias

Not a new title from Banks, but in fact a reprint of one of his grimmest 90s works. Not a Culture novel, but a standalone piece, Against a Dark Background is first-rate, but pervasively gloomy (not as over the top as Use of Weapons, say, but broodingly dark nonetheless). Not my recommendation for an introduction to his work, but well worth reading once you've sampled something like Consider Phlebas, Look to Windward, or Excession, say.
