Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Medusa Uploaded Medusa Cycle Book 1
by
Emily Devenport

Emily Devenport's Medusa Uploaded is apparently the first in what I'm hoping will be a series of novels. Set on a pair of generation starships en route to a new home, the story is told from the perspective of Oichi Angelis who is one her society's many "have nots". The "haves", or Executives as they're called, live in luxury while their servants struggle to survive. Life is cheap and inter-clan assassinations are common. Oichi's life takes a dramatic turn and we're suddenly following her on a very unexpected path. What made this story so compelling for me was that you knew from fairly early on that there was a huge twist coming up. All was not as it seemed but you just couldn't put your finger on the likely explanation. I loved it mainly because of that fact ... nothing is worse than figuring everything out midway through a novel and that certainly isn't the case here!

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (Wayfarers #1)

I just finished Angry Planet and am so glad I took a chance on it. I haven't enjoyed a good sci-fi romp this much in ages. In some ways it's your standard "motley group on an adventure" story but there was just something about this crew that made it so much more than that. From inter-species romance to symbionts to AI, it's all here and best of all, it works. Becky Chambers has written some fantastic characters and I can't recommend this book highly enough. Can't wait to read the next one!

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of Literary Obsession
by

I found this story absolutely riveting! It was suggested to me by a fellow library tech student while I was in College and I can see why it was being passed around so much. If you love books and have any sort of fascination with collecting, this is a must-read. The fact that it's based on a true story just adds to the "wow" factor. I simply can't believe what this "collector" got away with...absolutely brazen in his technique. A thoroughly enjoyable read!!

Science Left Behind Feel Good Fallacies & the Rise of the Anti Scientific Left
by
Alex B Berezow, Hank Campbell
Westcoastnerd
, April 24, 2017
I had been so looking forward to getting my hands on Berezow's Science Left Behind but after reading it I was a little let down. Although it's easy for those of us on the left to point at people on the other side and call them anti-science every time they open their mouths about climate change, it's also true that we have more than our fair share of science-deniers. I was really interested in learning more about those people but in the end the flaws in his logic and general style turned me off. There are some excellent points and examples made throughout the book but overall, it was a bit of a disappointment for me.

Really Short History of Nearly Everything
by
Bill Bryson
Westcoastnerd
, April 22, 2017
Bryson's History of Everything was the first book of his that I read and I absolutely loved it. It really does cover practically everything. You wouldn't normally expect the history of science to be entertaining but his dry humour is spread throughout these stories and I caught myself laughing out loud more than a few times. Best of all though, he uses some excellent analogies to help put into context various concepts, timeframes and distances so that numbers and ideas that usually make your eyes glaze over suddenly make a little more sense. An absolute must-read!
