I expected this book to be creepy but I did not expect it to also be snort inducingly funny, and it delivered on both counts. mixing humor and horror doesn't always work, and the author made the two blend seamlessly. Taxidermy, HP Lovecraft-style monsters from another dimension, annoying ex-husbands and a museum full of curiosities make this so enjoyable. It's my favorite horror book of the year.

Cooking for Good Times Super Delicious Super Simple

I love cookbooks, but I keep a tight leash on my cookbook consumption and only allow myself to buy one if I find at least five recipes that I plan to cook right away. This one exceeded my expectations. Not only are the photos of the authors' cabin in the woods beautiful and rustic-modern, the food is fantastic. I know. you think you don't need another recipe on how to roast chicken or fry smashed potatoes? I assure you, this one is worth it. Add in the buttermilk dressing and the apple celery root salad, and you've got a swoon worthy meal. Plus, anyone who plans their cooking to include charcuterie to snack on while things come together is a chef after my own heart. Take good, flavorful and fresh ingredients (seasonal fruits and vegetables; lots of fresh parsley, garlic and lemon) and put them together to make meals with huge flavor payoff, even on a weeknight. There are also accessible beer and wine pairings offered for each section. This is food you'll want to share with people you love.

What do a Monmartre artist's model, a perfume maker, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, a goat and an Argentinian expat all have in common? They were all frustrated, amazed and alienated by eccentric composer Erik Satie. The book traces the lives of the three Satie siblings as Erik struggles for recognition and notoriety in turn of the century Paris, leaving a slash and burn of confusion in his wake. Erik's persistent and self centered existence is tempered by the heartbreaking stories of his sister Louise and the painter Suzanne Valadon - a clear illustration that while anything goes in the smoky salons in Paris, life for women is still second class. This is so much more than a portrait of an avant garde life. The author has meticulously researched the details of a remarkable life and filled in the unknown with beautiful fiction. It literally made my heart ache. I cannot stop thinking about this book.

Though very short - it's just a pamphlet - this is one of the most powerful memoirs I've read this year. It goes from the personal to the political pretty seamlessly, and without hyperbole. There are a few illustrations of small details that are associated with the author's memories of specific moments in her life - most of which involve some form of abuse and alienation. These small vignettes of disappointment and resignation are told with a clear voice and plain language that resonates deeply; it delves into what it means to be a young woman who has experienced trauma and is working through that on a personal and familial level, and how the political climate folds in on this.
