The Heartbreak of Aaron Burr
by
H. W. Brands
TeacherSteve
, June 07, 2017
If you loved Hamilton or you love American history then you are familiar with the role Aaron Burr played as a statesman and later as the man who shot and killed Alexander Hamilton. In this book, historian H.W. Brands reveals a side of Burr that very few know. He was also a father who mourned the death of his daughter. Brand's realistic portrait of a complex man does much to enrich our understanding of such a tumultuous time in our nation's history.

Freedoms Children Young Civil Rights
by
Ellen Levine
TeacherSteve
, June 06, 2017
I loved this book. It describes years later and in the words of young people active in the Civil Rights what was happening at such a time of upheaval in our country. This book complements all other histories from the Civil Rights movement with rich and detailed portraits of people we should never forget.

A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present
by
Howard Zinn
TeacherSteve
, June 05, 2017
This is on the list of books everyone should read in his or her lifetime. It is an invaluable history behind the history we all too often get stuck with. Zinn delves into, through an unparalleled use of primary sources, what really happened throughout history when it comes to race, colonialism, and the role the United States has played in often being regressive and reactionary. This book is very good and very readable, and a scholarly account you don't want to ignore.

Cycling Home from Siberia
by
Rob Lilwall
TeacherSteve
, June 01, 2017
Lilwall's book is a very good story of how he basically circumnavigated much of the globe, found love, and had a lifetime of adventures. He's a great guy and his humanity shines in how he encounters the people and places along his journey. His book is about having dreams and goals, albeit extreme ones in his case, and going out and making them reality.

Satchel The Life & Times of an American Legend
by
Larry Tye
TeacherSteve
, May 31, 2017
If you love baseball and the colorful characters who inhabit the world off and on field this book for you. It's a definitive account of one of the legends of the Negro Leagues, denied entry to Major League Baseball until he was 42, and then helped the 1948 Indians win the World Series. It's a great read about an amazing and complex man.

For anyone who has dream of doing something big, Weber's memoir is for you. He decided to ride across the country at age 57. The successful NY Times writer give us a wonderfully written travelogue of his journey. You can't help but root for someone who is just like the rest of us, but his accomplishment and writing make this an excellent read.

The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories
by
Marina Keegan, Anne Fadiman
TeacherSteve
, May 27, 2017
On one level this book is painful to read knowing that the author, a young and vibrant woman, died in a car crash. But her passion for living and tackling life's difficult questions and her willingness to love and laugh make this a must-read manifesto for the 21st century.

The North Water
by
Ian McGuire
TeacherSteve
, May 26, 2017
A powerful read not for the feint of heart, The North Water is a loaded combination of murder and redemption. Though set in an English whaling town in the mid-19th century, it is an engrossing read.
