The 5-Minute Visual Guide to the Bible: Time Lines, Photographs, Paintings, and Maps to Enhance Your Understanding of God's Word
by
Michael E. Wittmer

, July 20, 2021
5 stars, Awe Inspired Learning THE 5-MINUTE VISUAL GUIDE TO THE BIBLE By Michael Wittmer For such a small book, this one packs a significant punch in helping you to easily learn about the Holy Bible. Everything about it is nice and inspiring. The entire Bible is tastefully simplified for you to tackle reading and comprehending God's handbook for all of humanity. I like the heading on each title page, it draws your eye there first. The next thing I see is the uplifting illustrations and artwork, each image is accompanied by a short text discussing the chapter. Here's a list of each section. *Introduction* Creation* Fall* Israel* Exile* Jesus* Church* Jesus' Return* Each chapter simply takes 5 short minutes to read and think about. Highly recommend. I am extremely blessed because #BarbourPublishing gifted me a complimentary copy of #the5minutevisualguidetothebible I was under no obligation to post a review.

Draw Like an Artist 100 Buildings & Architectural Forms Step by Step Realistic Line Drawing A Sourcebook for Aspiring Artists & Designers

4 stars, Interesting Draw Like an Artist: 100 Buildings and Architectural Forms by David Drazil This is a how-to drawing book. It shows handy hints and helpful tips to make your drawings look more realistic. I gave it 4 stars because it was only available on the NetGalley Shelf book reader. It would have been nice if it were available in Adobe Digital Form, so I could actually try the techniques out. I'm not an artist, but I'm willing to try and willing to learn. The only problem is, Mr. Whitaker's only child, a daughter named Meg has suddenly decided that she should be the one to take over the business and permit, no one else, especially not Oliver Ross, who is her sworn enemy, since he maliciously destroyed her science project and caused her to lose an important scholarship when they were in school together. Always a Wedding Planner: 4-In-1 Romance Collection
by
Rl Ashly and Leeann Betts and Toni Shiloh
mrsboone
, June 04, 2021
5 stars Love will find you ALWAYS A WEDDING PLANNER Finally a Sweetheart by Toni Shiloh Hemmed In by RL Ashley The Worst-Kept Secret by Leeann Betts Taste and See by Davalynn Spencer This joint effort follows four modern women, a baker, a seamstress, an events planner, and a chef, who met at church and decided to combine all of their skills and start a wedding planning business. Each story depicts one of the ladies and incorporates their struggles in life and love with their faith and the love of an honorable man. FINALLY A SWEETHEART by Toni Shiloh, Felicity, the baker of amazing wedding cakes, and Will, the barber. HEMMED IN by RL Ashley Kiki, the seamstress, and Bing the Fireman, and unfortunately, Camilla the new office manager. Camilla was awful and the conclusion of her story was not believable. In THE WORST KEPT SECRET by Leeann Betts, Cassie the events coordinator, and Brady, a limo driver. In TASTE AND SEE by Davalynn Spencer, Ronnie, the chef, and Ty, the cowboy, and handyman. In conclusion, I liked how the stories flowed from one, right into the next one. I think the book would have been better if Camilla was not in it, at all. It is with great appreciation to #davalynnspencer @davalynnspencer #tonishiloh #leannbetts #rlashley #barbourpublishing #netgalley for the complimentary copy of #alwaysaweddingplanner I was under no obligation to post a review.

Test Gods Virgin Galactic & the Making of a Modern Astronaut
by
Nicholas Schmidle
mrsboone
, May 28, 2021
TEST GODS by Nicholas Schmidile I didn't care for the title of the book, though the non-fiction aspect of test pilots was intriguing. The book follows Mark Stucky in his personal quest for NASA. Unfortunately, NASA rejected him repeatedly and he was able to find fulfilling work as a test pilot. We learn the history of Virgin Galactic and what it meant to that company to possibly get the first tourist space ships into operation. They had to design the properly shaped space ships, design a fuel that could propel the ships "out of this world," and find pilots who kept their cool and were able to fly out of our atmosphere. When you think of being a space tourist, you'd probably think that only a select few of the world's richest inhabitants would be able to afford a seat, you'd be right. Space tourism isn't for the middle class or lower classes. Probably not even many years into the future. It's just not affordable. But, it's okay to dream about it. That's what Virgin Galactic started with, was a dream. Many thanks to #henryholt #nicholasschmidle for the complimentary copy of #testgodsvirgingalacticandthemakingofamodernastronaut #testgods I was under no obligation to post a review.

Bridge of Gold: Volume 3
by
Kimberley Woodhouse
mrsboone
, May 27, 2021
BRIDGE OF GOLD by Kimberley Woodhouse This is a dual timeline book, you follow several people through events beginning with the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1933 and following others in the present time. It's a bit of a mystery, you think the book will go one way and it goes another. There's a lot of folklore about ships of gold from the 1850s being lost in the water channel beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, with dedicated treasure hunters struggling to see if the rumors are true. Steven, a bridge restorer, has found something unique in the water under the bridge in the present time. Kayla, an underwater archeologist is called in to consult. They are given journals from the earlier time when the bridge was under construction, both of them finding the history intriguing while finding the hints about the rumored gold exciting, but not necessary or essential to their work. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes well-written mysteries, history, inspirational, treasure novels, or a little romance in their novels. Many thanks to #barbourbooks @barbourbooks for the complimentary copy of #bridgeofgold I was under no obligation to post a review.

Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends Healthy Options Cookbook: Health Begins in the Kitchen with Over 200 Recipes, Tips, and Remedies from the Amish
by
Wanda E. Brunstetter
mrsboone
, May 24, 2021
WANDA E. BRUNSTETTER'S AMISH FRIENDS HEALTHY OPTIONS COOKBOOK by Wanda E. Brunstetter This is a nice, lay-flat spiral cookbook that is easy to use in the kitchen. When I think of Amish cooking, I think of wholesome, homegrown fruits, vegetables, and even grains. Wanda takes it a step further and has made a wonderful cookbook that is, for the most part, allergen-free. Many people have food allergies these days and are quite limited on the foods they can prepare at home. This cookbook takes allergen-free recipes to a whole new level. Foods and beverages that are healthy and tasty. Just what you need to keep your family happy, healthy, and feeling well. A 4 ingredient Peanut Butter Cookie recipe that is dairy-free and gluten-free. They taste wonderful! I like the Bible verses and adages spread throughout the cookbook, meant to uplift your heart while reading or creating delicious recipes. My most sincere thanks to #barbourbooks #barbour @barbourbooks for the complimentary copy of #wandaebrunstettersamishfriendshealthyoptionscookbook I was under no obligation to post a review.

Return to the Big Valley

, May 20, 2021
RETURN TO THE BIG VALLEY: Wilma's Wish by Wanda Brunstetter Martha's Miracle by Jean Brunstetter Alma's Acceptance by Richelle Brunstetter One thing that all readers of Amish fiction know is that any book that is written by a Brunstetter is going to be wonderful! This is a delightful collaboration by Wanda, her daughter-in-law Jean, and Wanda's granddaughter Richelle. Each of these three women has a unique take on living the wholesome Amish life. You won't be disappointed with this book. Highly recommend. Wilma wishes to be Israel Zook's wife more than anything, but when events beyond either of their's control occur, Wilma feels forced to make a difficult decision. Martha knows deep in her heart and soul that she is meant to remain in the Amish faith and community. She is considered a "tomboy" type of girl, which is unusual in the Amish community. She can cook and clean, she'd just rather be off in the great outdoors, appreciating what God has designed for us to enjoy. Alma is a newly widowed young woman who is suffering greatly after her beloved Michael was taken unexpectedly from her. A friend offers a place for her to come and visit to try to get her mind off of her loss. Deeply faith-oriented, things that don't seem to have much focus in today's world, but loved, all the same. #BarbourPublishing #barbourbooks #barbour was so kind to provide the complimentary copy of #returntothebigvalley I was under no obligation to post a review.

One Two Three

ONE TWO THREE by Laurie Frankel 5 Stars Three Amazing Girls Mab, Monday, and Mirabel Mitchell are triplet sisters who live with their widowed mom, Nora in the sad town of Bourne. Bourne used to be a lovely small town, but it was taken over and ruined by the Belsum chemical corporation, who turned the town's river bright green and left. Unfortunately for the residents, the birth defects, cancers, and deaths do not bring much hope for the future. The triplet's mom has been crusading for two decades to bring the chemical corporation down and institute fair compensation for everyone who lives in their damaged town, she has an ongoing lawsuit against Belsum and has a lawyer who works diligently to make the corporation pay. There is never enough proof, though. This is a fictitious book about how little people can fight back against a corporation. Because the Belsum company comes back and wants to pollute them all over again. Different parts of the book remind you of the movie ERIN BROCKOVICH, 2000, (non-fiction) as Erin successfully went after the energy giant PG&E and won, for the little people. This story isn't exactly the same, but it is enjoyable. It pulls at the heartstrings, for the suffering of the weakened residents of Bourne. Many thanks to #henryholtandcompany @henryholt for the complimentary copy of #onetwothree I was under no obligation to post a review. It has nestled itself right onto my #favorites' shelf.

Unnatural

UNNATURAL by Luke Fitzpatrick 3 stars REMINDS YOU OF X-MEN SERIES This book will remind you of the X-Men series that is of action and sci-fi genres. This novel is of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. Teenagers from around the globe are finding out that they have super abilities. Not necessarily abilities they are happy to have, but abilities that they can't get rid of or change. The teens with these astounding abilities are slowly able to control these abilities and come together to work as a team. This changes the earth forever. The blurb appealed to me, but I found after several attempts to read the book, I was unable to get interested in the book. It would probably appeal to you if you appreciated the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. Stampede: Gold Fever and Disaster in the Klondike
by
Brian Castner
mrsboone
, May 09, 2021
STAMPEDE by Brian Castner 4 STARS NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE This is an interesting novel about the famous Klondike Gold Rush. From the initial discovery of gold to the thousands of people who dropped everything to run for the gold. Desperate folks who thought they could get rich quickly but most found only pain and heartache. The story is told in more of a story form, yet still giving the details about who found gold first, at which locations. The gold rush was 1896-1899, with the stampede being 1897-1898. Few people got rich from the gold that they found. They discovered that the inflation of regular things like food or supplies went up. The book has a plethora of historical facts about the stampede, it would appeal to history buffs. Some of it was interesting to me, but I lost interest in it, somewhere in the middle. Thankfully, I received a complimentary copy of #stampede @stampede from #netgalley I was under no obligation to post a review.

NO JOURNEY TOO FAR by Carrie Turansky In 1909, seven-year-old Grace McCallister along with her fourteen-year-old twin siblings Garth and Katie were all transported from England to Canada, as British Home Children. All three of the children were separated. Garth and Katie each went to a cruel taskmaster who held their indentured servitude papers until they turned 18 or 21. Grace was more fortunate and was taken in by a wealthy couple and raised as their natural daughter. When Grace would ask questions about her past, her adoptive parents always brushed them aside, not wanting to speak of the taboo subject of the British Home Children. Katie and Garth were found by their mother and their older sister Laura. They hired private detectives to try to find their missing baby sister Grace. A chance encounter reveals where Grace last came from so she writes the orphanage to see if she can trace anyone from her past. Garth McCallister left his place of indentured servitude and headed off to war. When he left behind his sweetheart Emma, he vowed that nothing would ever keep them apart, when he returned. Yet, when he returns, Emma has disappeared. This is a novel of the past reconciling with the present, of hope, and of limitless love. Highly recommend. Along a Storied Trail

Ann H. Gabhart

ALONG A STORIED TRAIL by Ann H. Gabhart Imagine my excitement, when I found out that I was approved for this wonderful novel about a young woman's packhorse librarian adventures. I have read several other fictional books of this same genre, for I like to see the different author's sentiments on this important time in Kentucky's history. I find it intriguing that it was only instituted in Kentucky, not any of the other poor states at the time. The packhorse library was instituted as a WPA, Works Progress Administration approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was instrumental in getting the project going as a way to bring reading materials to isolated families in the Appalachia Mountains. By hiring mostly women to deliver the books on horseback or by mule also gave families hard hit by the depression a small income to help support their families. This book joins my list of most favorite books, with mixed emotion, though I am happy to have received an advanced eBook that will expire, however, I will remedy that lack pretty soon, by purchasing my own print copy and it will have an honorary spot on my favorite book's shelf. Highly recommend. Thanks a million to #netgalley #revell #bakerbooks #annhgabhart for the complimentary copy of #alongastoriedtrail I was under no obligation to post a review.

HOW TO DRAW ANYTHING ANYTIME: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO CUTE AND EASY DOODLES by KAMO One of my most favorite Kamo books, so far! Kamo takes you to another level by showing you how to create a doodle from anything you might see, anywhere. There is a special section on drawing people, from bodies to facial details and you can mix them up, so you have an entire neighborhood of people in your sketchbooks. Kamo shows you that doodling is fun. I already knew that, but other people might not yet know that. UNDER THE MAGNOLIAS by T. I. Lowe A unique coming of age story of the 1980s. Hmm, historical fiction. Never thought I'd be saying that. In Magnolia, South Carolina, Austin (Ox) Foster the 15-year-old daughter of a tobacco farmer grows up faster than she had ever dreamed of. They meet Mrs. Foxy and Jinx at the local fair the day their mama dies, after speaking with Dave, they decide to move to the tobacco farm to help look after things. Dave Foster is a charismatic man who farms his tobacco fields and also has a small church on his farm. The townsfolk consider it a church of misfits since Dave Foster seems to take in any and all people or animals that are needing someone. He's always bringing some unfortunate souls to church and praying for and with them. There are always unwanted pets or animals being left at their mailbox or dropped off at their house. Damaged folks seem to naturally gravitate towards Foster's church. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, highly recommend it. It has an honorary spot on my favorites shelf, for all time. Words can't describe how thankful I am for the complimentary copy of #underthemagnolias by @tilowe from @tyndale #tyndalehousepublishing I was under no obligation to post a review.

A LADY IN ATTENDANCE by Rachel Fordham Set in 1898, when proper ladies did not work for single men, Hazel finds that is her only choice. She has spent the past five years in a state reformatory for a crime that she did not commit has left her in desperate circumstances. She feels there is nothing else she can do but take an assumed name and seek employment. Her family does not wish for any contact, so she is on her own. She looks all around for a suitable job and finally finds one working for Doctor Gilbert Watts, as his Lady in Attendance, which is a secretary and dental assistant for his busy, successful dental office. Doctor Gilbert Watts is a timid man, with no social skills whatsoever especially in dealing with the opposite sex. He describes Hazel's duties to her and makes it plain that they are to have a working relationship only. Hazel isn't looking for romance, she simply wishes to earn enough money to live and to someday be able to clear her name. There is a mystery afoot. Original story. Delightful characters. Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
by
Kim Michele Richardson

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson Not very often do I come upon a book that I truly care so much about, as I do this one. The heroine Cussy Mary Carter is a poor, lonely, "colored" young woman who is a Packhorse Librarian which is part of Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project in Troublesome Creek, Kentucky. When I say colored, you might think brown, but in Cussy Mary and her family's experience, it would be lovely to be a brown-skinned person. No, Cussy Mary and her family are Blues. The book introduces you to some of Cussy Mary's book patrons such as Henry, the adorable little boy who loves Peter Pan; Miss Loretta, who is mostly blind, who doesn't read anything she's given, but she enjoys the "Book Woman" reading to her from the Holy Bible; Devil John, a moonshiner who has specific requests from the "Book Woman"; Angeline Moffit, a sixteen-year-old bride; Jackson Lovett, a charming young man who has traveled and worked out West for a time but is now at home, working on his homeplace. Each is a very interesting person, making you fall in love with almost everyone in the book. You learn to love who Cussy Mary loves and cares about. Highly recommend. I have purchased my own copy of #thebookwomanoftroublesomecreek . It will have an important place on my Favorite's shelves, for all of time.

Banished: An Amish Romance
by
Linda Byler
mrsboone
, April 16, 2021
BANISHED by Linda Byler Oba and May Miller are from Ohio, when their parents die tragically, they are sent to live and work with their aunt and uncle in Arkansas on an Amish cotton farm. That is basically the banished part of the title. Other family members in Ohio didn't want to take care of them at ten and eleven years old. The children found themselves abandoned by everyone and everything they ever knew. Little did they know, they would descend into Hell and back during their time in Arkansas. Their uncle is a staid, upstanding member of their community in Arkansas. He unfortunately for Oba also has a sadistic side and beats Oba regularly and abuses both of the children, continuously. Some members of the community feel like there is something going on, but since there are no other witnesses, they chalk it up to teenagers having a hard time fitting in and basically ignore their feelings. This was a nice novel, some of it harsh but with the indomitable spirit of Oba, he overcomes. May has hard decisions herself, that she will have to deal with. Highly recommend. ANNA by Sammy H.K. Smith A futuristic, dystopian novel of the failure of society as we know it today. Women and others are routinely captured and kept as slaves, branded, and abused for the sadistic pleasure of their owners. Anna has managed to survive in the broken world by following strict guidelines, never trusting anyone, and staying to herself. Her world changes when she is captured by Will. He is a psychopath who wants to control her every movement. Very hard to adjust, when you are used to being on your own. Trigger warnings: Rape and abuse. This is not a romantic novel. This is a novel about survival. Highly recommend. Many thanks to #netgalley for the complimentary copy of #anna I was under no obligation to post a review.

Sunflower Sisters

The Sunflower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly The story is told from three points of view: Jemma, a young slave who is owned by Ann-May, her entire family is also owned by Ann-May. Death, torture, and abuse are a big part of young Jemma's life. She desires freedom, for herself and her family but isn't quite sure of how to go about bringing it to them. Georgy (Georgeanna), a white, abolitionist from New York, her mother is a widow, who has 6 daughters and a son. Georgy keeps busy with helping out this cause or that one, she takes up nursing and is sent to several locations to nurse the Union soldiers back to health. Ann-May, a vicious, sadistic owner of Peeler Plantation in Hollywood, Maryland. Her husband fought on the Union side of the Civil War and her beloved brother fought for the Confederates. She doesn't write, but she can read and she forces Jemma to write some details down about the Federal Soldiers and sells them to the Confederates. A zealous spy of the worst kind. We follow these three ladies as their lives come together with a crescendo towards the end of the book. It is a very long book, full of plenty of details so that you completely understand each of the three ladies and the things that happen in their lives, with and without their control. I enjoyed it, though it seemed quite long to me. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley, I was under no obligation to post a review.

The author has done extensive research on all nine of the women, one of which was her great-aunt Helene Podliasky. Most of the women had nicknames, which they are all referred to in the book. Helene's nickname was Christine. Author Gwen Strauss has done extensive research into the backgrounds and lives of all nine of the women. It is a courageous story of hope and devotion to one another. Highly recommend it, it gives you a look at a different side of the war, the women who fought so selflessly for the war effort and were punished to the breaking point for their beliefs. Complete the Drawing: Drawing Prompts to Get You Started
by
Editors of Chartwell Books

, March 19, 2021
COMPLETE THE DRAWING by Quarto Publishing Group-Chartwell Books A fun-filled, joyous book that gets you started with sketches of partial objects, and then you complete the drawing, however, you desire. The image that I liked the best, was the tree trunk. The publishers leave to you the options of drawing a big, beautiful treetop and or going below to create a massive tree root system. You can use the start that they give you for a detailed family tree or a simple doodle sketch of a tree. It is possible to complete the drawing and fill the entire thing in with a design, to make it "yours." It was a little awkward since this is an eBook, but it's doable. If you feel you are not able to freehand copy the image that is provided for you, use a piece of tracing paper to help you capture the object. Highly recommend. Much gratitude to #netgalley @netgalley for #completethedrawing complimentary copy, I was under no obligation to post a review.

301 Things to Draw: Creative Prompts to Inspire Art

301 Things to Draw by Editors of Chartwell Books I should have had a clue, by the unimaginative, plain cover of this book, that it is not a book that would in any way, shape, or form appeal to me. Literally, there are the words of 301 things to draw in this book. You open the book to any page and you will find a word like SWING and space for you to draw that item. Platitudinous of the very worst sort. Some folks are not artists and rely on artists' sketches to help them develop their fledgling skills. Possibly, a sketch of a SWING and space to draw your own version of it would be helpful. This is a book of creative prompts, and room to draw it. You could do better by saving your money, buying a sketchbook or notebook and look around you and draw what you see, like DOOR, LIGHT, BIRD. Lamentably, I received a complimentary copy from #netgalley @netgalley of #301thingstodraw and was under no obligation to post a review.

How to Doodle Everywhere Cute & Easy Drawings for Notebooks Cards Gifts & So Much More

How to Doodle Everywhere by Kamo Kamo is very talented. I am a wannabe doodler. With Kamo's guidance in this book, I can create very believable doodles to decorate my life. I love doodles, I like to add them to handwritten letters, to brighten someone's day; scribble in a journal, adding them to brighten my day, possibly bringing a smile to one of my future ancestor's faces, as they read my journals. It helps to put more of ME into my writings. Kamo is Japanese and has a small section dedicated to drawing traditional Japanese clothing, hairstyles, and foods. I like everything about the book, it shows you step by step, how to make the more difficult doodles, but you will have a lot of fun with this book. Kamo recommends using a ballpoint pen, that's all, so whatever your choice for drawing with, what are you waiting for, jump right in and get started! There is instruction on coloring in your doodles, with colors or designs, using these instructions, your doodles can literally POP off the page, they look so wonderful. Composite Creatures by Caroline Hardaker I was unable to get interested in this novel. I tried multiple times, the description made it seem like something that I would enjoy, but it never engaged. Basically, it's about a man and woman who move in together and live their lives. They adopt a pet that is some sort of genetically modified creature. Maybe resembling a cat, possibly has gray or purple fur. The book went on and on about their love and care for their pet. Remember Me by Lesley Pearse An epic story, one of my favorites. Mary is a 19 y.o. woman who gets transported for a simple crime of theft, after first being sentenced to hang. If you have children while you are in the colony, they become prisoners, also. Poor little children whose only crime is to have been born on the wrong side of the ocean. Mary is frantic that her children will be raised in such a grim environment. Never knowing that elsewhere in the world, there are people who behave humanely and lovingly. Highly recommended. Apocalypse Summer by Tyler Jolley and Mary Geis A group of 17-year-old teens had been put into cryosleep and were awakened unexpectedly, far from where they were supposed to be brought back. The person who could have told them what's going on was killed in an accident, as they awoke. The book is about their awakenings and what they did a few days after. It's a pretty good story, but seems too short and has a cliffhanger. Maybe young adults have a shorter attention span. Forgive Us
by
E. T. Gunnarsson

Forgive Us by E.T. Gunnarsson In this nonlinear narrative, we follow London and Rose who are survivors of the post-apocalyptic Earth; Simon who is a member of the Rapture, a group of people who were sent to a space station to live until Earth is habitable again; Oliver a survivor who has a motorcycle and big dreams for the future. The dates don't make much sense, in the first three-fourths of the novel, but as you get closer to the ending, it starts to make more sense. I gave it 4 stars, because although it is well written, it seems towards the end, that several key players are killed off, with not much fanfare, especially since they were such key elements in the book. Seemed to be almost rushed at the end. It is part of a series, so there wasn't a plausible reason (to me) to have ended that way. There were a lot of details in the first parts of the book, telling how hard it was to survive on an unfriendly Earth. You find yourself rooting for the survivors. Lady In Residence by Allison Pittman In San Antonio, Texas in 2017, Dini Blackstone who comes from a long line of magicians, works at many different gigs. Her favorite one is giving ghost tours of the Menger Hotel. Telling about poor Sallie White who was murdered at the hotel and of Hedda Krause, a woman who moves into the hotel with all of her worldly belongings, after her husband passes away. Dini also does magic shows for birthday parties for children and general parties for adults. She especially likes to perform card tricks with flair. In 1915, Hedda Krause moved into the Menger Hotel with all she possessed, hoping that her presence at the hotel will lead to a fine marriage to a wealthy husband. During the time that Hedda is in residence at the hotel, she is robbed, but her story is hard to believe, since she says it was done by the ghost of Sallie White. Hedda gives her side of the mystery in the form of a memoir in the book. Detective Carmichael is assigned to investigate the case. Quin Carmichael is a great great grandson of Detective Carmichael who takes the Menger Hotel tour with Dini, hoping to piece together the mystery of the theft of Hedda's valuables. Quin and Dini join up to solve the mystery. The story is original, with a lot of suspense and mystery. I enjoyed the story. Highly recommended. Castle Builders: Approaches to Castle Design and Construction in the Middle Ages

Castle Builders by Malcolm Hislop The research that went into this book delves into the building of castles in the Middle Ages. It looks at the ability to defend that specific area from towers, how it sits in relation to water for drinking and travel. You get a feel for the scientific approach to designing castles, so long ago. The pencil drawings are numerous and helpful in understanding what the castles look like. There are a lot of measurements in the book, how large the castle is, the size and shape of rooms. It describes what materials were used in building the castle walls. Overall, very informative. An architect interested in history would greatly enjoy this book. Most of the castles are in England, but there are some from many different places. Since it's mostly about a teenage youth group, there is potential for a lot of learning by the reader. The book has made it onto my favorites shelf. It will bring great joy to read it again and again. Many thanks to Waterbrook Multnomah and NetGalley for the complimentary copy, I was not obligated to leave a review. This is the first book from NetGalley that I've read, I felt a little forced into signing up, I really wanted to read the book and that is the only way that it was offered to me. Worked out the kinks over several days and ended up being an okay experience. Still would rather have a print book, but so many publishers aren't even offering that option for ARCs any longer.

THE CROW'S CALL (Amish Greenhouse Mystery #1)By: Wanda E. Brunstetter Paperback A foretelling of foreboding? Amy King thinks it could be. Any time she has heard a crow's call, in her family's yard, something bad has happened.Amy's father, brother, and brother in law are in a terrible accident, with her father's horse and buggy, one evening. Small things at first, then larger and larger targets. Amy doesn't know what to do about them. She and her mother think that Henry is possibly responsible for the troubles, but Henry denies any knowledge of the trouble and says whomever is targeting him is just making more work for him and he wouldn't do that to himself or his family. The book flows nicely and is an interesting story. There are several mysteries that are not concluded in the book. They will keep you in suspense until future books are published. I would have liked each book to have it's own mystery, with a solid conclusion at the end of each one.All in all, very good Amish Fiction. Suspense. The Pink Bonnet: True Colors: Historical Stories of American Crime by Liz Tolsma The author got into the details about Georgia Tann, who was the Director of the Tennessee Children's Home Society, in Memphis, from 1924-1950. She has become well known in our modern age, as a ruthless kidnapper and sold to whomever she could get the most money out of and murdering the babies and children that were hard to place. Cecile Dowd is a mother in this novel, who's daughter Millie that has been kidnapped by Tann. Cecile tries several times, to get her daughter back. She eventually does get her precious daughter back, but has several run ins with the law, a phony lawyer that Tann has in her employ and is berated by the Memphis police department. Ms. Tann was known for her high-handedness and ruthless tactics in securing a child and also in finding the highest bidder for each child. In "Pink Bonnet," the author takes us into the relationships of several adopted children. It doesn't explain why or how a poor family was able to adopt two children as a labor force and someone to beat on. Mrs. Dowd is only one of possibly thousands of parents that had been taken by Ms. Tann. Not all of them received their children back or any sign that their child/children had survived. I give this book a 5 out of 5 star rating. It was interesting and held my attention. What an animal that G. Tann must have been. Her journal is interesting, she lives is Przemysl, Poland with her grandparents, who live in the apartment above their stationary shop. Her mother is mostly in Warsaw and their father lives out on their country estate, farming and keeping people working for him. Renia gets together with her friends regularly, there are 6 or 8 guys and girls that hang out together, regularly. Her diary is interesting, but seems to stay in one place. There was an expectation, that this was a diary from someone who lived and died during the Holocaust, or who survived. It wasn't until the Epilogue by her sister Elizabeth that explained a lot of things. The poetry and songs aren't my thing, but for the right person, it would be great. Renia was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. I received a complimentary copy from Goodreads and St. Martin's Press with no obligation to review. Imagine-The Giant's Fall by Matt Koceich When a young girl, suddenly is transported from 2019 to a field near Bethlehem in the year 1020, she is amazed. People led such simpler lives back then. She is staying with David's family. She knows from her Bible and from the landmarks and people described, that David is the one who goes up against the giant Goliath. She goes out shepherding sheep that provide so much for David's family. She continues on to the field where the battle is to take place. This book is another in the Imagine series, a quick read for adults, but maybe a chapter book for teens and tweens. I enjoyed the book. Cards of Kindness for Courageous Girls by Barbour Publishing and Shiloh Kidz Awesomeness of a tiny dynamo in a nicely wrapped up package! The book is actually a collection of cards that you easily tear out and give to the Courageous Girls in your life. Each card features a sweet saying on one side and offers up tiny words of wisdom on the other. I'm an adult and I love it. Could be used anonymously to brighten someone's day. Use to bring forth a smile. Though it is published by a Christian Publishing House, the cards aren't "OVERLY RELIGIOUS," just full of nice thoughts and an absolutely charming resource. The Guy's Guide to Four Battles Every Young Man Must Face

Guy's Guide to Four Battles Every Young Man Must Face by Jonathan McKee A wonderful little book, that helps to guide and shape your boys into well rounded, respectable young men. 1. Sexual Temptation 2. Screens 3. Controlled Substances 4. Self-Esteem Our son probably wouldn't have read this book, being the kind of personality, that he has--BUT, his dad and I would have read it and gently covered the four bases. This book is perfect for young or old people, to understand what these temptations can do to harm your thinking. The author gets his points across, by using short "stories" that hold your attention, then make you think about the consequences. I could have used some help in Self-Esteem, myself, as a teenaged girl. Highly recommend. Now, it's time to go read the Girl's version of this book. The Inn at Hidden Run: Volume 1
by
Olivia Newport

, May 05, 2019
This review is for the complete paperback copy of: The Inn At Hidden Run by Olivia Newport This book seemed to be more about family and relationships, more than the inn at Hidden Run. It was vaguely referred to once in awhile. I reckon if you need to give a book a name, there it is. Mari Davies is on the run! Her family of doctors is pressing her into a doctor's life. She knows she flunked the doctor's test. She has no desire to be a doctor, but her family won't quit pushing her. So, she ended up in Colorado-from Tennessee, found a job at the Inn at Hidden Run, as a clerk. Little did she know the owners of the inn would be interested in her and what she was fleeing from. The owners, begin tracking Meri's family down. They do eventually discuss what is the matter with Meri's family and everyone decides that Meri is right, in wanting to choose her own profession. The story gravitates towards coffee throughout and a lot of the discussions take place over meals. Coffee is never a bad thing. Paralleling this story is the one of Eliza in 1878 Tennessee, helpmate to all whom need her and frequently a visitor at the local hospital. Covers a good amount of family history, makes you want to look up your own genealogical history. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and Shiloh Run Press and I was under no obligation to post a review. The Inn At Hidden Run by Olivia Newport

On a Summer Tide

On a Summer Tide by Suzanne Woods Fisher Let me just`say, this is a Great Book! After a LOT of starts and stops I managed to read the whole thing. It is set in modern times, about a father who sells their family home and buys a rundown island, in the hopes that he and his three grown daughters will come together to run a summer camp, and fix up the rest of the islands problems. A compelling story, because of my choppy reading, I've probably read this book three times total. I would sit down and re-read each page again and again. The book has wonderful characters who are well developed and you feel like you have stepped into their lives, to watch quietly by the wayside. You wish you could step in and give a character a big hug and have a cup of coffee, except if Peg made it! As I referred in the beginning, this is a wonderful book. Highly recommend. Suzanne Woods Fisher is more known to me, for her Amish or family living, Non-fiction. I don't have to worry about steamy sex scenes or the language being foul, or blasphemous; all throughout her books, or just sneaking one in on me. She has a good moral base and I know her books are good. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Library Thing and Revell, I was under no obligation to post a review. Jude goes and does what he is told. But, following the trail of a police officer's daughter is not so easy, if you're trying NOT to be spotted. Winnifred catches on to him and asks him if he'd like to travel beside her, instead of after her, since she knows he is there? Together, they investigate small clues. Winnifred accidentally ends up getting a job offer from the man she saw kidnap that woman. Oh no! She knows she has to accept the secretarial job. Her father agrees to it, only with Jude or another officer ALWAYS watching out for her. She can keep the job, as long as her Aunt Lillian is out of town. That meddling woman, Winnifred gets exasperated with her, she's always pushing "young, handsome & rich" young men at her. She isn't ready to get married yet. Emily Eternal

Emily Eternal by M.G. Wheaton is a fast paced novel. Sit down, fasten your seatbelts-it's going to be a wild ride! Emily is a super computer personality. She is able to communicate with people of her team (at a college) who wear an interface chip, fastened to the back of their neck. If you have the chip, she shows up as a person. Her creator Nathan Wyman has made Emily to be an artificial consciousness, (AC), to interface with human minds. They have a college program that is called iLab, that is where they work. Emily is a talking therapist. There are hundreds of volunteers who are in the program, that Emily works with. Unfortunately, there is a super, life ending event, that everyone is aware of and the President of the USA comes to them to see if Emily can download everyone's DNA and save it to a server and people will jettison that into space, so that sometime far into the future, the DNA can be unlocked so the people of the world can be saved at a molecular level. At first, Emily refuses. She has a morality chip and would rather gather DNA through permissions. But, there isn't enough time to get permission and Emily can just go into their minds and pluck the DNA strands and save them. She eventually agrees to do what the President asks, but insists that She be the one who sends the servers into space. The lab is destroyed by evil henchmen. They are private security types who are bent on killing everyone and destroying everything. Emily hadn't made it to the lab that day, so she lived on. I thought this was a pretty good book, deals a lot with the doomed planet and what we as people can do to survive. The book had some twists and turns, but the end of the book seemed a little rushed. It should have taken longer, that the book did. All in all, it is a good book. I will read it again. I will think about the ending, as well. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Goodreads/Grand Central Publishing. I was not obligated to leave a review.

A Tender Hope, Cimarron Creek Trilogy, #3. It is a stand alone novel. I think it's a charming book, the characters are mostly like-able. It's easy to immerse yourself into the story. I highly recommend it. #1 A Stolen Heart #2 A Borrowed Dream #3 A Tender Hope Thea Michener is a widow who is a midwife, decides to leave Ladreville, Texas, with her friend Aimee using her beloved horse Maggie and buggy. They are moving just little ways away, to Cimarron Creek, Texas-where Thea has been hired as the town's midwife. Thea is a recent widow and she's ready to throw off her black mourning clothes forever. She will wear colorful dresses to homes where she will assist with births. Thea is given a very nice home, that has five bedrooms in Cimarron Creek, where she and Aimee will live. Aimee is a transplant from France. She is looking for her mother. She knows she was born in Ladreville, and that her mother had moved to Cimarron Creek. She was adopted. Her adopted parents did not tell her she was adopted, she found out after they died, in some papers they had. Jackson is a Texas Ranger who is on an under-cover on a robbery case, that has led him to Cimarron Creek. All three of them descend on Cimarron Creek, Texas in 1881. Read the book and find out where their lives take them. I was given a copy of this book from LibraryThing and Revell/Baker Publishing, with no stipulation, to write a review. Woman of Courage: Collector's Edition Continues the Story of Little Fawn

Wow! Wanda Brunstetter proves without a doubt, that she is capable of switching from her beloved Amish Christian novels to slam bang right into the middle of 1837! Love, Love, Love this book with the bonus of Woman of Hope along with Woman of Courage set in a beautiful Collector's Edition. Amanda Pearson is a Quaker woman who has been jilted. She prays and decides that her life would be better spent traveling from her home in New York and all that she knows and travel to Oregon Territory, where thee Spaldings have set up their mission to help lead the Nez Perce Indians to know God and Jesus, to help them learn to live in the "white world" and help out however she can. This novel follows Amanda's life and her adopting Little Fawn, a Flat-head Indian baby. In the bonus novel, Woman of Hope, we follow Little Fawn's life when she is a headstrong seventeen year old Indian maiden. She has a lot of the impulsiveness, that you see with almost anyone of that age. This is a historical Christian fiction book with a lot of information about the Nez Perce and the Flat-head Indian tribes. Since Emeline Baratt's mother died, when she was small, it was she who cooked and cleaned for her whole family, consisting of her father and brothers. Her father was in the shipping business and owned several ships. He decided that Emeline needed to go to her great aunt in England and learn how to be a lady. Emeline had also learned some doctoring skills, from her uncle. But, when Emeline arrived in England, she found her aunt sickly and she was needed all over again. She didn't mind, her aunt was a nice lady. When her aunt died, Emeline's father wanted her to board one of his ships, and come home. Just so happened that it was the War of 1812 and it wasn't safe for an American to be in England. When the American ship was captured by an English ship, Emeline had to think and act quickly, another lady from her father's ship convinced her to say she was English, so she'd be treated better by the captain and crew. The captain of the English ship heard that Emeline was a healer, he set her up in the ship's infirmary, so she could take care of his injured or sick crew members and any of the Americans. First Lieutenant Owen Masters is extra nice to Emeline at times and she begins to have feelings for him, but knows that they could never marry, because she is American and Owen is a British officer. Follow along and see where their story goes. Very good book. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

This is a delightful children's series called Kingdom Files, by Matt Koceich. It takes the reader (children ages 8-12) on a wonderful journey into the past to discover more about people in the Bible and to find out that each featured person did a lot of great things. I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Esther. She was a Jewish woman who became Queen. She has a lot of other things that she is known for, that Mr. Koceich has lined out for the reader to discover; using Fact File, Clues, and Power Files, so that the reader is able to quickly understand who and what Esther was really like. I enjoyed reading this book. Can't wait to share it with my grandson. There are interesting pictures throughout the book, I think the small size of the book will attract pint sized readers. The Hope Jar: Volume 1

Wanda E Brunstetter did a VERY good job with this book. I couldn't put it down. Michelle Taylor is virtually homeless, she runs away from an abusive relationship and is waiting at the bus station to purchase a bus ticket to Anywhere else. She is mistakenly identified as an Amish couple's long lost, unknown granddaughter, Sara Murray. Having no one else to turn to and nowhere to go, she lets them assume she's their relative. Willis and Mary Ruth Lapp are Amish. Their only child, a daughter named Rhoda, ran away from home when she was a teenager and never returned to them. One day, they get a letter from Sara Murray, claiming to be the grandchild they've never known. They were saddened to learn that their daughter Rhoda has passed away, but excited about meeting their granddaughter. After Michelle arrives, she begins to take on small chores to help out the Lapp's, also so she can learn more about becoming Amish. She finds a jar in the cellar that has all sorts of messages in it. There's prayers and questions (for God). Michelle hasn't been introduced to God or Jesus in her life, living in the foster system. She starts wondering who left the jar full of hopes, and why. Ezekiel and Brad are young Christian men whom Michelle encounters in her new life, living with the Lapps. She decides that she could love either one of them. It's a charming story, it was never answered who wrote the notes in the hope jars. Or, who is Sara's father. Maybe it will be answered in the next book. This is a great journal, it has a quality metal spiral, good to flip from one page to another. The colors are cheery, It's designed so you can write down your prayers, so you can follow them to see if they came true (hopefully), or not (might be for your own good). You can follow your prayers from beginning to end. The book is as an upbeat, friendly and a joy to use. You look forward to prayer time. As it should be. And also flip back through the months and years and see what your prayers and thoughts were at that time. Highly recommend. It's a book for women, but anyone could use the pages. You could cover the covers and it would be usable for any person, any age. I received a complimentary copy from Barbour Publishing, with no obligation to submit a review.

Massacre survivor Eliza Spalding Warren has terrible fears and memories of the time she spent as a captive of Cayuse Indians, when she was 10. She was the only one of the captives who could speak both English and the native tongue. Her beloved mother dies when she is a young teen, leaving her to mostly raise her two younger sisters. She grows up and continues to have blackouts from her past. She marries a man her father detests, thinks Mr. Warren is not worthy of his oldest daughter. The book takes you through her life, raising her daughters and dealing with her husband. Quite an enjoyable book, Jane Kirkpatrick takes a lot of history and weaves a story with a bit of fiction. Highly recommend.

I didn't read the first book in this series, so I felt in the dark most of the way thru the book. I loved L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, you could pick up any one of them and jump right in. Any of her books are worth reading. I will get the first book & see if I can "catch up" to the continuing story that is "The Golden Road."

I was SO moved by this book. I'm not a teary person, but I cried 5 times, while reading this book. I also stayed up all night reading it, because the content was so compelling. Max is 7 years old, he has the perfect life with his mom Kiahna, who is a stewardess and his best friend in the whole world, Buddy, his dog. His mother's and his friend Raimey who has looked after Max, for his whole life. Raimey is an older lady with complicated health issues. Everything was perfect, until one day, Max's mommy didn't come home. Raimey took care of him and Buddy, as Raimey notified Kiahna's attorney that she was dead. Raimey found that Kiahna's will stipulated that Max spend two weeks with his biological father, before he be put up for adoption. Max has never heard of, or seen his father. It has always just been him and mommy; with Raimey helping out some. Kiahna and Conner met at an airport in Honolulu, when Conner, a commercial airline pilot gets stranded at the airport, when a hurricane is blowing around. One thing led to another, after a series of misunderstandings and the following day, Conner flew home to his family. Kiahna & Max lived in their own, special little world. It devastated everyone around Max, because he was such a wonderful little boy with all of this tragedy all around him. Highly recommend.

Imagine... the Ten Plagues

This book is written for a preteen. I felt like my own interpretations of the Ten PLagues was changed, by reading this book. One plague is the oldest child (son) would die from each of the Egyptian families, living in that area, along the Nile. I had always assumed (?) that the children that would die would be babies, but the author describes it another way. I have since adapted my own interpretations. The author jumps right in on the first page, so you are immediately interested and want to keep reading. There was a minor discrepancy, when all of the animals died, but I think it was possibly left in, for dramatic flair. I don't think that maybe a preteen would even notice the discrepancy. I highly recommend. I received a complementary copy from Barbour Publishing. I was not required to submit a review.
