Crime & Punishment A Novel In Six Parts with Epilogue
by
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Richard Pevear, Larissa Volokhonsky
Ashley
, May 16, 2018
A psychological portrait of a man whose conscience battles to overcome base instinct. A frenzied adventure into the psychology of motive, I found the plot lacking and the characters to be caricatures on the sidelines of a story about one, self-important individual.

Everything New Puppy Book Choosing Raising & Training Your New Best Friend
by
Carlo De Vito
Ashley
, May 16, 2018
A great general guide to life with a furry friend. A little heavy-handed regarding dog breeders and making environmentally friendly puppy purchases. Really solid advice.

Blood Moon An American Epic of War & Splendor in the Cherokee Nation
by
John Sedgwick
Ashley
, May 16, 2018
I've recently come across some controversy about how factual the facts really are in this. It is a compelling read, nonetheless. As the Cherokee people adapted to the formation of the United States of America, civil strife was rampant. Through the biographical narrative of two opposed tribal families, Sedgwick tackles issues of assimilation, family, and national pride.

In One Person
by
John Irving
Ashley
, May 16, 2018
Particularly painful in a number of ways. John Irving's In One Person is a sensitive portrait of endearing characters who all, at different times and in different ways, grapple with concepts of identity. Veering (slightly) from Irving's typical formula, and lacking his usual sense of humor, is worth the read.

Science Ink Tattoos of the Science Obsessed
by
Carl Zimmer, Mary Roach
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
While not quite the coffee table book I anticipated (I didn't enjoy the photo-quality), I found myself continually engaged by the blurbs accompanying the photographs. Zimmer did a wonderful job capturing the beauty in scientific concepts and forms which inspires people to lead lives of inquiry.

Americanized Rebel Without a Green Card
by
Sara Saedi
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
Couldn't put it down. I learned a lot about Iranian culture, and I learned a lot about the immigration process in the United States. I also giggled and gasped as I engaged with the diary of a witty young woman coming of age in the 90s.

Three Somebodies: Plays about Notorious Dissidents: Scum Jack the Rapper Art Was Here
by
Kat Georges
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
Anarchy! Chaos! Passion! The works of Kat Georges pack a real punch. That's an understatement. I was reeled in by the energy and the layers of art apparent in each play. However, it was "Jack the Rapper" that won me over (5 star for this one). In knitting together lines from the great TS Eliot, Georges creates an eerie scene of horror and beauty.

Buzz: The Stimulating History of the Sex Toy
by
Hallie Lieberman
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
Very well researched history of the sex toy in the US. Lieberman explores sex toys as gag gifts, instruments of sexual liberation, and prosthetics for individuals with disabilities. Wonderfully interesting and entertaining.

I Am Lucille Ball
by
Brad Meltzer, Christopher Eliopoulos
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
Lucille Ball was an instrumental figure in comedy and television. This graphic novel biography for children is adorable. It carries a positive message for young ladies who don't fit into a traditional mold, and encourages readers to find their own joy.

Rick and the gang are ready to plan ahead. But that involves reaching out to other communities. And what could be scarier?

Digging for Troy From Homer to Hisarlik
by
Jill Rubalcaba, Eric H Cline, Sarah S Brannen
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
An exceptional book for young adults, Digging for Troy begins with a retelling of a famous legend. The second half of the book describes modern adventurers, explorers and archaeologists who have excavated Hisarlik in the name of finding the mythological land of Troy. Stories can indeed inspire action.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have found this on the library shelves! This is the story of how punk got started, told in verse for children. The clay figures are absolutely splendid illustrations of legendary punk figures. Makes a great gift.

History of the Decline & Fall of America A Semi Fictional Satire
by
Scott Erickson
Ashley
, May 12, 2018
With the current state of things in the US, sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Scott Erickson's new book, The History of the Decline and Fall of America is the perfect companion for my plight. Through remarkably strong research, Erickson concisely summarizes the twists and turns of flawed logic that have landed Americans in their current economic and political climate. With a wry and witty take on American history, this semi-fictional approach anticipates how such flaws in logic and governmental policy may come to haunt us in the future- with madcap results! Feeling downtrodden after reading the news? Remember: you're not crazy, it's the world.
