Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Gifted School

We all know these parents, administrators and kids... We ARE these parents... One reviewer already described "The Gifted School" as "juicy." I cannot improve on that. I could not put it down as I barreled through to the end. A delightful, funny, not-so-funny portrait of our best and worst attempts at validating our children and, ultimately, validating ourselves as parents.

Something Wonderful Rodgers & Hammersteins Broadway Revolution
by
Todd S. Purdum

, July 21, 2018
I loved "Something Wonderful." It rocketed me right back to my girlhood in the 50s, belting out Rodgers and Hammerstein show tunes along with the cast albums. As a child growing up in Central Ohio, I never dreamed I would see a Broadway musical, but with those LPs, it was the next best thing. "Something Wonderful" lays out the whole process of the Rodgers and Hammerstein enterprise and I reveled in every word. Just like those old records, Mr. Purdum's wonderful book provides a beautiful respite from a lot that's wrong with the world today. I highly recommend.

Stephen Florida
by
Gabe Habash

What, you might ask, could a 70-year-old retiree (me) have in common with a 22-year-old college wrestler (Stephen Florida)? As it turns out, not much. But the magic of "Stephen Florida," and what kept me at it, was the challenge of finding out. If you like your characters complex, and you're interested in learning more about how a 20-something male operates, this is the book for you. And you'll learn a lot about wrestling. Gabe Habash's writing and character development make the story so compelling. I have never read anything like it, and I highly recommend it.

The Wonder
by
Emma Donoghue
Sheila G.
, June 07, 2018
I've read the Emma Donoghue of "Slammerkin," the Emma Donoghue of "The Room." Here's the Emma Donoghue of "The Wonder," and what a wonder she is. Once again Donoghue has created narrators and characters of remarkable mettle. Nurse Lib comes to young Anna's bedside devoid of faith and full of skepticism. In cramped and cold shanty quarters in the Irish countryside, she comes face to face with misguided faith, twisted beliefs and somewhere, the will to exist. As the product of a 1950s-60s Catholic school girlhood, I was right alongside Anna and her family as they recited their daily devotions. Like Anna, I was often lost in faith as a young girl, but never to this extreme. Donoghue's exquisite storytelling will give you something to think about, and, more importantly, to believe in. Another masterpiece from Emma Donoghue.

Marlena
by
Julie Buntin

I live in a small town in Nevada, and our state selected "Marlena" as our Nevada Reads for this year. Author Julie Buntin criss-crossed the state to talk about the book and meet readers, and she stopped at our county library last night (May 15). The crowd was small -- about a dozen people -- but enthusiastic. Everyone had read the book and had comments, questions and shared experiences. It was a very intimate and informal conversation about many topics, the writing process, and Ms Buntin's journey from concept to publication. What a thrill to meet the author! She was open and engaging, and left me with an understanding of how she could write such a complex novel. I could go on and on. I realize I haven't said too much about the book. READ IT!! It's wonderful and harrowing and true.
