Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Between Form & Freedom
by
Betty Staley

As a child/adolescent psychotherapist who worked many years with adults, families and children this is the only book I recommend to parents about child development and teenhood (13-21). It is most insightful, any adult that reads it instinctually relates to it from their own teen years. It is an enlivened exploration into the true and heartfelt nature of adolescence recognizing it as a critical rite of passage. It briefly covers the years leading to adolescence and the Four Temperaments then proceeds to teenhood. Without this knowledge as written by Betty Staley you will never truly understand your child or yourself. It covers topics on moods, self-esteem, drugs, food, friends, family and school and other topics. I suggest it is the definitive "bible" for parents, teachers and adults.

Theosophy An Introduction To The Supersensible

For those like-minded in their search for truth and the true nature of man and the world around us, this book is a starting point. It is clear and testable in its tenets. When I first read it I felt validated in that what I had intuited in youth about the world was right. Modern day education and in particular the physical sciences are superficial in theory and lacking in enlivened thinking; both are passe` and have been so since at least the 16th century. A.
