Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Gardener of Alcatraz: A True Story
by
Emma Bland Smith
Stephanie
, April 20, 2022
Read THE GARDENER OF ALCATRAZ by Emma Bland Smith and Jenn Ely to my 8 y.o. tonight and oh my god! I knew I was going to love this book but wow. My 12 y.o. overheard us reading, came to see what it was, and asked to read it right after us. When he read it, he was completely engrossed in every page and kept making comments about all the things he liked on each page. Emma’s voice is so engaging and ideal for non-fiction and Jenn’s art is gorgeous! I loved a detail that my 8 y.o. pointed out on the page where the new prisoners are disembarking on the island — he knew exactly which one Elliott was. “Because he’s special, so he has hair and the rest don’t.” What a thoroughly delightful book and a wonderful true story!

This Is a Seahorse
by
Cassandra Federman
Stephanie
, September 13, 2020
Oh, my hoofness! Cassandra Federman knocks it out of the ocean again with this delightful snicker of a book! I'm 46 and consider myself pretty informed about many things, yet I learned so much about seahorses reading this book! I'm dying to leak some of those facts in this review because a few totally floor me and make me want to ask Cassandra follow-up questions (they will provoke amazing classroom discussions), but I won't spoil it for future readers. My 7 y.o. giggled the entire time he read this to himself, which additionally proves that this is a wonderful read-aloud for classrooms, library story times, and cuddly bedtimes. The very last pages give a potential look at Cassandra's next book in this series (???) Let's hope we are so lucky.

Queen of Physics How Wu Chien Shiung Helped Unlock the Secrets of the Atom
by
Teresa Robeson

I love this lyrical, informative, and fascinating celebration of Wu Chien Shiung. We need more books just like this that tell us more about the unheralded women of color in history (and in the present). I specifically loved learning how supportive Wu Chien Shiung's parents were of her and her education. What a marvelous biography and one that should be used as a mentor text for all NF bio authors.

Just So Willow

A thoroughly delightful and relatable story about how letting go of inflexibility can have surprising and fun results. Many children will definitely see themselves in Willow and understand so much of who she is.

Wait, Rest, Pause: Dormancy in Nature
by
Marcie Flinchum Atkins
Stephanie
, September 07, 2019
This is a simply wonderful book. It's meditative, informative, and beautiful. I've grown into adulthood not knowing the differences between various dormancies or even which animals did what during that time. This book puts an end to my ignorance in the most lovely way. I can see every elementary school classroom and library benefiting from having multiple copies of this on hand.

When a Tree Grows
by
Cathy Ballou Mealey
Stephanie
, June 22, 2019
With sprightly illustrations, this book takes the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie format into the wild where the author creates a hilarious if/then story that gives the reader a lot of open space to come up with their own rip-roaring if/thens.

The Little Green Girl
by
Lisa Anchin

A beautifully illustrated story that takes one of parenting's greatest challenges: setting aside our fears for our children and recognizing when they are ready for a bigger world and fuses it with a growing child's desire and need to go "beyond the garden wall."

A gorgeous and evocative wordless picture book that brilliant captures shyness. And I simply adore the way Brooke Boynton Hughes draws trees.

One of the best middle-grade novels I have ever read. Legit laughed out loud, clapped my hand over my forehead, got really scared, and cried. Highly recommended for tight, nuanced writing with heart and humor.
