All the Stars and Teeth (All the Stars and Teeth Duology #1)

I really enjoyed the magic system that Adalyn has create. There are seven island of the Kingdom of Visidia and each island has its own magic. The magic that is involved in this world is mind magic, soul magic, elemental magic, time magic, curse magic, restoration magic, and enchantment magic. Basically the Kingdom is made up of two rules. Rule No. 1, No one is allowed to practice more than one magic. If you were to learn more that one it would be too much and too dangerous for a person. It would have violent consequences. No. 2, Only the Montara family is allowed to do soul magic. Ferrick is Amora's long time friend and fiance. He will follow her anywhere. He is very loyal. I love that he is sweet and caring. He has his own dreams and desire that he would like to accomplish. He doesn't focus everything on Amora. Amora is very interesting. She is to be the next ruler of the kingdom. She is trying to learn as much about her kingdom as she can. She is very naive but she truly wants the best for people. She also isn't afraid to do what she wants. Then there is Vataea. She is a married that joins the crew in the middle of the journey. In a lot of ways, I like her the most. She definitely has some tricks up her sleeve. Bastian is definitely to love interest to Amora in this book. He is a very confident pirate but he does care for us.

Cub
by
Cynthia L Copeland

Cub is a graphic novel memoir that looks back on what it was like to grow up as a girl in the school year of 1972. We get to see Cindy battle friends, boys, opportunities, bullies, and general life. This graphic novel was such a delight. When Cindy’s 7th grade English teacher suggests that she consider a career in writing, Cindy gets connected with a female reporter to show her the behind the scenes of being a journalist. Cindy finds this job extremely fascinating and gets excited at the prospect of seeing her name in print. Not only is Cub about Cindy’s adventures as a writer, it also tackles the subject of friends. Cindy’s best friend is starting to become friends with a group of girls that has always been mean to the two of them. Now she is trying to figure out who her friends are while she is also navigating the middle school dating life as she has her first boyfriend. Then a new girl shows up and Cindy jumps on the chance to make a new friend. I really excited for this graphic novel. I really hope that young readers will enjoy it as much as I did. I definitely think this is a really good graphic novel to read. It has some learning experiences but overall it is a very positive book

Seventh Sun 01
by
Lani Forbes

, March 11, 2020
The Seventh Sun by Lani Forbes is unique in the fact that it focuses on South American cultures. It has a bit of Mayan, Aztec, and Egyptian cultures within it. I found that to be quite fascinating. This book starts off with a very dramatic bang. Ahkin’s father has died. Ahkin’s mother is off to kill herself per the tradition of their culture. His mother kills herself so that her son is able to marry and the new wife will be the next incarnation of the goddess. I mean what a way to start the beginning of a novel. Ahkin has to find a wife before he can inherit the title of emperor.Wow! There are so many rules for finding a wife. They have to be of noble descendant of one of the gods. These gods are continually worshiped for the sacrifices to keep the people alive. The woman must prove themselves worthy of the marriage. The women that are not picked are sacrificed as a ceremonial blessing for the emperor’s rule and marriage. Quite intense right? Then we have Mayana who doesn’t believe in tradition and rituals. The beliefs she has about these traditions and rituals could get her killed if anyone found out. Mayana is an empath. She has a hard time with the sacrifices both human and animal. She doesn’t want to do them anymore and she questions why they are being done in the first place. All she truly feels is that she is letting her father down all the time because she has such a chard time with their way of life.

Night Spinner
by
Addie Thorley

, March 11, 2020
The Night Spinner by Addie Thorley is so good. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book but I found myself becoming extremely addictive to the story. Enebish is an ex-Kalima warrior that is a convicted traitor. She is mentally and physically disfigured and she is spending the rest of her days in a monastery training hawks. Enebish is nicknamed “Enebish the Destroyer” because she used her night spinning magic to destroy a whole caravan of people. Enebish wants nothing more than to get her freedom back. When Enebish gets herself in a bit of trouble, her adoptive sister Goa offers her a deal that she’s can’t refuse. If she helps Goa with a mission, Goa will help her get her freedom back. Enebish goes on a mission to become a spy but as she gets to know both sides of the story, she doesn’t know who she can trust. I really enjoyed this book. I thought the writing was great. It is very fast paced. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. Thorley did such a great job. I enjoyed the characters a lot. I really liked out Enebish grew into her own. She overcame so many obstacles that she had. I highly recommend this book.

Red Hood
by
Elana K Arnold
love2dazzle
, March 11, 2020
Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold. I am not totally sure what to say at this moment. This wasn’t the book that I was expecting. I was expecting a modern retelling of Red Riding Hood but instead, I ended up with a giant metaphor of being raped and killing your attacker. Something I wish I had a bit more warning for.Red Hood is told in second person. Which it has been a long time since I read a story like this. Second person is definitely one of the harder story views for me to read. It is a lot harder for me to connect to the characters this way. This story is very gory and very dark. Normally I would mind gory and dark if it made sense, but I don’t feel like it makes sense for this book at least not for teenagers. I find that this doesn’t work so well in this YA thriller fairytale retelling. There are moments that I feel like Arnold is trying to be an educator. She is trying to teach teens how to use a tampon and put a condom on it. I wish that Arnold did a better job with it vs going about it the way that she did.I think the biggest issue that I had with this book is that the message is supposed to be about female empowerment and girls banding together. In the end, it feels like this is feeling you that there is justification in murder. That is not an endorsement I support. This book is written to make the reader very uncomfortable so I get that. I just found that the book wasn’t really for me. I can’t say that it is a bad book either.

Bone Criers Moon
by
Kathryn Purdie
love2dazzle
, March 11, 2020
The Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie is an addicting novel. It pulls you in right away and holds your attention until the very end. Bone Crier's use bones of animals to strengthen their abilities and senses. Once they collect bones of three animals, they can perform something called the rite of passage to fulfill their purpose of ferrying the dead. There is one more thing. In order to complete the rite of passage, they will have to kill their one true love. This shows the ultimate sacrifice. If one is to fail, then that means death for them as well. I really enjoyed the characters in this one. I thought they were very thought out and put together. I really enjoyed Ailesse and Sabine's friendship. I love that it was a big deal throughout the story. These two had a sisterly type of bond that I just couldn't get enough of. I thought the world building was great. The magic system was very interesting and I was really glad to immerse myself into it. The culture was great. I found myself wanting to know more about this place everyone lived in. I thought the lore of the grace bones and the legends were all interesting.

Sadie
by
Courtney Summers

Sadie by Courtney Summers is an eye opener. This book is filled with so much sadness. When you come across the book, know this, Sadie is a very difficult book to read but you won’t want to put it down. I really like that Summers tackles some really difficult subjects. A little about Sadie: Sadie has a younger sister named Mattie. Her mom is an addict that always has a new boyfriend. Sadie does not know who her father is. She is continually getting bullied at school for her stutter. Like I said, not an easy read. Then Sadie loses her favorite person in the world. Her sister. This book deals with so much. If you want a book with hard subjects this is the one for you. Some of the subjects that are covered are neglect, abuse, sexual abuse, drugs, murder, revenge, heartache, the list goes on. From the very beginning of this book you know that Sadie is out for revenge. The author definitely gives you an easy way out. I thought that the way the Summers wrote Sadie that it was super unique. The story is told through Sadie’s point of view and podcasts. This podcast is obsessed with Sadie and telling her story. I liked the dual narrative because we were able to see the outside of Sadie’s situation but at the same time we got to learn from Sadie herself. This book is not an easy read at all. I thought it was very well written. Sometimes it can be tough reading or even writing about difficult subjects. I thought Courtney Summers did a wonderful job.

Daughter of the Pirate King 01
by
Tricia Levenseller
love2dazzle
, November 05, 2018
This review has been a long time coming. Especially since at this point, I have already read book two. I feel like it is never too late to right a review, plus Tricia Levenseller is one of my favorite authors hands down. She writes amazing characters. Daughter of the Pirate King is easily a five star read. Alosa is such a great character. I really enjoyed her fearlessness and how much she cares for her crew. Alosa is unpredictable and she is so enjoyable. I wanted to know what she was going to do next. As the reader gets to know Alosa and the secrets that she is hiding, you become super invested on what will happen next. One of the things that I really enjoyed with Daughter of the Pirate King is that all the characters are developed so well. Every single character in this book was written so well and I really enjoyed each of them. Each member of Alosa's crew had their own personality and back story. I thought this really added to the story. Being the daughter of one of the most powerful and dangerous pirates, Alosa is looked at someone who can be an easy ransom. Alosa doesn't always know who she can trust. Then Riden enters the story and turns Alsoa's world upside down. Riden is trying to track down Alosa's father's keep. Alosa is not so easy to give up important information. It was very interesting getting to know all the players in this pirate game. Daughter of the Pirate King is such a great book. Tricia Levenseller did such a great job at writing this book. I enjoyed every single second of it. To the fact that I have now read this book twice already.

Empirium 01 Furyborn
by
Claire Legrand
love2dazzle
, November 05, 2018
Furyborn by Claire LeGrand is such an exciting tale. This story is written in the point of view of two different people. One point of view is set two years prior to the prologue and the other point of view is set one thousand years in the future. Every chapter keeps you on your toes. This book is so intense. I feel like every chapter just through the reader into more action. Rielle is part of the court of Celdaria. Rielle has always been powerful. She is able to manipulate the elments and has grown up trying to stifle her power due to the fact that people are afraid of what she is able to do. Rielle ends up in the seven trials to test her powers. Eliana is an assassin who has the gift of being able to heal herself. She tries to protect her family by making sure she is in the King's good graces. Her way of doing that is by doing the King's bidding. The readers follows Eliana on a mission with another assassin that says he will be willing to help her as long as she helps him first. I really enjoyed Furyborn. I had a such a great time reading this book. I felt like it was written so well. LeGrand did such a great job with keeping these two storylines straight. One of the things that happen with really long books with multiple povs, you can sometimes become confused or get things mixed up and I didn't feel this way at all with Furyborn. LeGrand is an excellent writer that brought us a fantastic high fantasy novel. I am really looking forward to book two.
