Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I loved this book. The phrase that kept going through my mind was "just good stories"--no gimmicks. The collection reminded me of Jane Smiley's
The Age of Grief
, as the novella is spectacular, but so are the stories you read on the way to it.

I loved
Carry You
. I've kept a reading list for many years, and there are lots of titles on it I can't remember at all, but this book was so resonant I know I'll remember it and recommend it.

Bull & Other Stories

I loved this book! Right from the first page I could tell that I would. Dialogue is a real strength of
Bull
, as well as its cohesiveness, that elusive and essential element of collections of stories that are not strictly "linked." And the stories have that great combination of oddness (though fitting for the story at hand, not just for its own sake) and heart.

Dog Watches: Stories from the Sea

I loved Dog Watches--there is something about the title alone that draws you in, even though I wasn't familiar with the term at first. I was engaged all the way through, and the prose sentence by sentence was so beautiful and satisfying. The book is also a master class in how to do thematically linked stories--though they are all about the Navy, they are also about the characters at hand. Each adds to the whole, but can also stand on its own.
