Wisdom of Anxiety How Worry & Intrusive Thoughts Are Gifts to Help You Heal
by
Sheryl Paul
Angela
, April 26, 2019
This book is a beautiful invitation to befriend one's anxious feelings. The author is a Jungian depth psychologist, and her point of view is that anxiety has much to teach us if we would only pay attention and not turn away. I like her definition of anxiety as stated early in the book: "Anxiety is the bridge that connects ego to soul, conscious to unconscious, and when we learn how to harness the wisdom of anxiety, the richness and messages contained in the unconscious can inform and expand our conscious lives." To me this says that anxiety is a normal part of life and that it has a potential richness to yield, something our mainstream culture does not yet understand or teach. Paul instructs the reader how to turn toward their anxiety in a loving, self-parenting way and the resistance they can be expected to face. She also gives sound advice on how to deal with life transitions by attuning to the seasons of the year and basic physical self-care practices to help alleviate anxiety. I enjoyed her advice to explore looking at life metaphorically and her discussion of various feeling-states such as loneliness and longing. The book is generally a call for all of us to live more consciously by turning within to find the deep well of wisdom hiding beneath our anxious selves. Ageless Soul
by
Thomas Moore

Gorgeous, deeply thoughtful book on aging. I am in midlife and feel blessed to be growing older after reading this work. Beautiful, contemplative chapters on melancholy, psychological processing (a la Carl Jung and James Hillman), sexuality, illness, anger, play, loneliness and death. Helpful insights and wisdom from Moore's life are interspersed throughout the text along with relevant Greek mythology and philosophy.

Recovering from Emotionally Immature Parents Practical Tools to Establish Boundaries & Reclaim Your Emotional Autonomy
by
Lindsay C Gibson
Angela
, April 17, 2019
I think most people these days can benefit from some guidance and training on how to deal with emotionally immature people, most especially if these people are your parents. This book uses clear language to describe behavior that is common but overlooked in many family dynamics. I found the healing approach of recovery and self-care to be deeply affirming and practically useful. The focus is on developing awareness of emotionally immature behavior along with healthy coping skills and a better relationship with oneself. It's the type of book to spend some time with and will serve the reader well in all their interpersonal relationships. I look forward to reading the author's first book as well. Celestial Geometry
by

This book is a beautiful introduction to the field of archaeoastronomy, otherwise known as the study of ancient astronomy. Many ancient sites and temples around the world are covered and organized according to their alignment with the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. I've always found this subject fascinating and have visited several of the sites mentioned. It seems to me that their purpose was more complex than we could ever know, and I found the author's inquiry to be equally open-ended and curious. I also appreciated his scientific discussion of different alignments (such as solstices and equinoxes) as well as his musings on their importance to the ancients. It was lovely to read about the well-known monuments such as Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids along with sites that were new to me. Review copy generously provided by NetGalley and the publisher.

Call the Midwife 01 A Memoir of Birth Joy & Hard Times
by
Jennifer Worth
Angela
, April 16, 2019
In the preface to this book, the author muses about the lack of midwives in literature: "Why, in heaven's name? Fictional doctors grace the pages of books in droves, scattering pearls of wisdom as they pass. Nurses, good and bad, are by no means absent. But midwives? Whoever heard of a midwife as a literary heroine?" And so begins this compelling memoir written by Jennifer Worth. She served as a midwife in London's poor East End after the wars. She was trained by nuns and lived in a convent during this time along with several other women. She bicycled to her appointments and assisted countless mothers delivering their babies at home before hospital stays were commonplace. Something about this book fulfilled a primal need in me... perhaps to see what it was like when childbirth was still a sacred profession held by women. I never tire of reading about births or watching them in the well-loved BBC series based on this book trilogy. Worth not only makes midwives heroines, but mothers as well.

Anam Cara a Book of Celtic Wisdom
by
John ODonohue
Angela
, April 13, 2019
This is one of the most beautiful books I own. It came into my life very mysteriously soon after it was first published. It has gracefully woven itself into my experience ever since, gently guiding and holding me in my darkest days. It is difficult to rationally explain or review; I can only describe what it feels like when I read it. It's akin to peering into the depths of an illumined manuscript, or being inside a poem (as another reviewer here so eloquently states). I feel how hungry I am and drink the poetry like nectar. Below are a selection of chapter titles, which speak powerfully for themselves: The Human Heart Is Never Completely Born The Soul As Divine Echo The Wellspring Of Love Within The Eye Is Like The Dawn To Be Natural Is To Be Holy Beauty Likes Neglected Places The Soul As Temple Of Memory Old Age And The Twilight Treasures I never tire of this book; it's a constant companion that deepens with repeated reading. I feel so blessed to have crossed paths with John O'Donohue before he left this earth, even if it was only in the form of his writing. May his shining soul rest in peace.
