House of Hollow

This book... It's dark. It's morbid. It's gory. It has this amazingly macabre mood through the entire story. The descriptive writing is complete perfection (some of the lines in the story really make you go...whoa!) and the details are on point (especially if you want that extra creepiness). That's why I'm so incredibly disappointed to give this book any less than five stars. But, the story is so slow. And maybe that's because it jumps back and forth between what's going on in the present to what one of the sister's remembers in the past, it got a bit jarring and terribly repetitive! It got to a point where I was just waiting for the story to end. The way it unfolds is lackluster, I really craved more depth. All in all, I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't read it again. Thank you to PenguinTeen via NetGalley for an e-ARC to read and honestly review.

What Beauty There Is A Novel
by
Cory Anderson

What a beautifully dark, raw, and painful story. What Beauty There Is was incredibly difficult for me to put down once each character was introduced. It's a potent storyline, that really captured my attention! The way Jack is so determined to care for Matty and how Ava slowly gets swept up in their lives...it was fluid and all came crashing together in the end. I will say, the ending was a bit of a downer (only because I was rooting for something different), BUT it definitely left me interested to read the next book and that's fairly typical of series openers. There's a narrative at the beginning of each chapter and for me, some of it felt unnecessary and left me a bit confused. Though, other parts added to the ambiance of the story nicely...so it'll be up to each reader to decide if that's something they enjoy as I'm kind of indifferent to that part of the writing. Overall, I definitely recommend checking this one out if you're looking for a heart-wrenching, thrilling read. Huge thank you to Roaring Brooks Press via NetGalley for the e-arc and via BookishFirst for the advanced finished copy to read and review honestly.

Luck of the Titanic
by
Stacey Lee

What a beautifully-written, diverse Titanic story! Going into Luck of the Titanic, being a YA Historical Fiction novel, you at least have an idea what's going to happen...I mean, Titanic, yaknow. BUT Stacey Lee throws a few curveballs at you along the way making for a very intriguing story. The pacing is quick, the descriptive elements are great (I felt like I was walking the ship as Val was), and the twin's story is told in such a way that their backstory blends seamlessly with the present. The Luck twins, Valora and Jamie, find themselves aboard the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Val is a dreamer and quite snarky at times...which I love! Jamie is more level-headed and just wants to move on from his childhood, he's grown up in the time he's been working away from his twin. We meet a few other fantastic side characters along the way and I couldn't help but fall in love with all of them! This does follow the story of the Titanic as accurately as possible, so it's heartbreaking at times, but the journey to the end is so worth reading. I highly recommend this book! Huge thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons Books via NetGalley for the e-arc to read and honestly review!

Switch
by
AS King

I'm really not sure what I've just read... Switch is really strange and I don't think it's in a good way in this case, unfortunately. The writing style was...so incredibly difficult for me. It doesn't flow like a regular novel does. It's broken into different pieces essentially and those pieces are terribly confusing. I felt myself losing interest fairly often because of the choppy writing. The synopsis of this book is super interesting, I mean...that's why I wanted to read it, but I'm not sure where that description stemmed from as I feel like I've read a completely different book. And that is such a bummer! I'm not even sure who to recommend this book too... I'm sure there will be those that will love it...I just didn't, sadly. Thank you, Dutton Books for Young Readers via NetGalley for the e-ARC to read and honestly review. I'm sorry it didn't hit the mark for me.

Crossbones
by
Kimberly Vale
Lea Pearl

Okay, first of all...that cover! It's gorgeous, completely the reason I decided to give this book a read and I was not disappointed! It has everything a great pirate book should; swashbuckling adventure, a pirate treasure, dueling, and even some romance. Kimberly Vale wasted no time setting the mood in Crossbones, opening with one of the main characters, Csilla, being lead to the gallows to hang. From there, there's no real lull in the adventure, each chapter alternates between three POVs, Csilla, Kane, and Lorelai, giving a great look into the plot as a whole. Unfortunately, the characters felt almost forced together and therein, they just automatically liked each other...I mean, they're pirate captains, where's the edge and grit? The relationship and character arcs could have been better suited to being steal-your-booty, swashbuckling pirates. I think, for a debut author, this is a fantastic first book. It's fast-paced and quite fun to read. I definitely recommend giving it a go! Huge thank you to Wattpad Books via NetGalley for the e-ARC to read and honestly review.

Kingdom of Back
by
Marie Lu
Lea Pearl
, April 07, 2020
The Kingdom of Back is a new take on Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart's story. Why is it called 'The Kingdom of Back'? Because "everything is backward"! This story is a sublime mixture of historical fiction and fantasy. The way both genres are woven together, you almost forget what type of book you're reading. It's a slow-paced novel so there are some repetitive parts and some things tend to drag on, but I found myself intrigued enough that I wanted to keep going. Nannerl struggles with the path already paved for her life and obeying her father as she grows through the story. All she wants to do is compose her own music, but instead she gets to watch her younger brother, Woferl, write his own music and essentially live the life she wants. The siblings share a fantastical realm, The Kingdom of Back, that mirrors our own. But not everything is as it seems and not everyone can be trusted. Full of history and imagination, this story is a definite page-turner that kept me entertained the whole way through!

Vanishing Deep
by
Astrid Scholte

A definite must read! Astrid Scholte paints the story of a beautifully haunting world in The Vanishing Deep. I found myself flying through chapters simply because I was so intrigued by the story and just had to know what happened next. Tempe has hardened her heart after the loss of her parents and older sister, Elysea. She's self-sufficient and determined. Elysea confesses a secret to Tempe after her revival and Tempe makes a rash decision to flee Palindromena with her sister; creating the setting for a whirlwind adventure for the two sisters! Lor has his own secrets that are given away as you progress through the story providing more intrigue and mystery...and there is just a touch of romance between him and Tempest that I found quite charming. This novel is creepy, twisty, and amazingly structured. I could imagine the story so clearly, making it that much easier to immerse myself into the dystopian world. "The Equinox is close to many sunken cities and if you look down upon the ruins below and let your eyes blur, the ocean looks like the night sky, and the coral its stars." I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review and, I enjoyed it so much I purchased a finished copy!

The Queen's Assassin
by
Melissa de la Cruz
Lea Pearl
, April 07, 2020
I'll start by saying there's a lot of backstory to this novel that gets a bit confusing in the beginning, but Melissa de la Cruz really weaves a wonderful story! Shadow wants to be an assassin. She is determined, witty, and self-sufficient: someone you can't help but root for. "Do the most good" Cal is the Queen's personal assassin bound by a blood oath made by his father. "There is no escape from a blood vow" Their worlds merge; creating an adventurous and sometimes humorous story. I had no idea what to expect from this book, and I was pleasantly surprised! The flow of writing (once you get by the history) draws you in and is paced in a way that keeps you wanting to turn each page. If you enjoy royal fantasy, edge-of-your-seat action, tortured love, and sarcastic banter; this is a definite buy. And, the twists near the end...I did not see those coming! This book ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and left me hanging on a cliff.
