Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

My last edition of Taber's was from 1967, and it got used until it fell apart. Time for an update!

Wine & War The French the Nazis & the Battle for Frances Greatest Treasure
by
Donald Kladstrup

This was a heart-breaking and inspiring book to read. Heart-breaking because of all the suffering folks went through, but inspiring because of their courage and determination not to be crushed and defeated. It ranks right up there with Robert M. Edsel's "The Monuments Men' for depicting the greed and outright audacity of the Nazi regime.

Intrigue, murder, plots, counterplots, lies, deception, all set in an exotic locale. What's not to like?

This wonderful book offers an explanation of many of the place names and how they came to be, as well as being an easily read history of Manhattan. There's lots of old photos and interesting historical and architectural tidbits as well. It is, simply put, a fun read.

Woman of No Importance The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II
by
Sonia Purnell
Sabitha
, October 24, 2020
The most suspenseful spy novel has absolutely nothing on this book, primarily because its true! Like "The Monuments Men", this book will leave you full of outrage and incredulity at the cruelty, greed, and depravity of the Nazis. And, hopefully, full of admiration and gratitude for those who sacrificed so much to resist them.

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey
by
Rinker Buck
Sabitha
, October 24, 2020
I was expecting a history of the Oregon Trail, but this turned out to be much better! It is more of a personal journey and journal, full of humor, frustrations and sometimes heartbreak. Mr. Buck debunks some myths along the way as well, especially about the Mormons and those who provided them with the equipment to make their journeys. He also provides more information than you'd ever want to know about mules and their history, which I found quite interesting. The book is a fun read as well as being interesting and informative.
