Cry In The Night
by
Mary Higgins Clark
Jathan
, September 24, 2022
Forty years after its original publication date, A Cry in the Night continues to stand the test of time. Thrilling, chilling, and utterly compelling, it is a novel readers won't be able to put down. Each page gives another detail bent on creeping us out, and yet readers will find themselves powerless to resist this tale that is guaranteed to fray the nerves. As always, Mary Higgins Clark introduces us to compelling characters. Certainly, modern readers may question some of Jenny's choices in the story, but a lot has changed over the years. Still, much like in Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, the new mistress of the manor has a lot to learn about what it means to be the new wife of such a prominent man. While aspects of the story feel familiar and predictable, Clark uses these threads of the story to manipulate our emotions and lure us into a false sense of security until she gives us a giant shove into the mouth of madness where no one can be trusted and hope seems untenable. If you're one of the seemingly few people in the world who has never read a Mary Higgins Clark novel, A Cry in the Night is a fine place to start. It will definitely satisfy your craving for a good suspense yarn, especially if you love Hitchcock style thrills. But if you're a longtime fan like I am, this is also a good book to pick up when you find yourself missing Clark's masterful storytelling. It's a great comfort read on a lazy afternoon.

Safe House
by
Stuart Woods
Jathan
, August 07, 2022
A Safe House is another globetrotting Stone Barrington adventure filled with interesting locales, gorgeous females, larger-than-life villains, and Stone’s quick, witty banter. Per Woods’ usual, this is a quickly paced story that makes for the kind of fun, fast read his fans have come to expect. Much like an ice-cold mojito on a blistering summer day, A Safe House is perfect for a holiday spent reading on the beach under a brightly colored umbrella. It is lighthearted and breezy and hits its target just right.

An Unlikely Alliance: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance
by
Toni Shiloh
Jathan
, August 02, 2022
With An Unlikely Alliance, Shiloh introduces two flawed characters whose humanity ultimately steals our hearts. As we watch Jalissa and Jeremy reveal their past hurts and work to forge a truce, we see how patience, family, and faith really can help us move mountains. Shiloh also examines the true meaning of forgiveness, God’s role in our lives, and the power of prayer. This is inspirational fiction at its best. An Unlikely Alliance, the seventh book in the K-9 Companions series, entertains even as it enlightens, and it will touch your heart in unexpected ways.

World Wild Vet: Encounters in the Animal Kingdom
by
Evan Antin
Jathan
, December 26, 2020
In a time when we’re all struggling to shelter in place, this is the perfect book to curl up with for a few hours and escape within its pages. Not only does it help us forget the world’s current health crisis for a while, but it educates us and opens our eyes to all the great and wonderful possibilities that lay in wait for us in the future, if we’re only willing to accept nature’s open invitation to explore them. It’s a book that may be equal parts travelogue and memoir, but largely it’s just a huge love letter to nature and all the wildlife that Evan loves. With World Wild Vet, Evan reveals that he is a fantastic and very capable writer, one who leaves us smiling and eager to plan adventures of our own (which is why we’re so proud this is our 12th diamond reviewed book). Mostly though, Evan proves his mettle as a vet and animal advocate, and I for one can’t wait to see where his wanderlust takes him next. If I’ve learned anything reading this book, it’s this: you may take the boy out of Kansas, but no matter how big he grows, he’ll always be the same sweet kid with the Cheshire grin and a critter in his palms. Enjoy!
