Henry Ike Pierce is a brand new Junior Detective, basically hired to work cold case killings. He's only on the job 3 days before a dismembered body is found .... and somehow relates to the murder of his boss' husband .... 20+ years ago. Being assigned as lead investigator, he must uncover the present-day killer while his boss pushes him to resolve crimes from the past. (BOOK BLURB) Henry seeks a killer within a community of rival ethnic groups, refugees from the 1990s Balkan wars. Rumors point to a killer called 'the hooded one.' As his investigation unfolds, the young man from western Virginia's coal country discovers that 'trust' has a flexible definition. Well-written with a complex plot and intriguing story line make this a 'must read'. The characters, especially Henry, are well developed. Secondary characters play a significant role... some can be trusted, some can't. Can't wait to see what happens in this detective's life next. Many thanks to the author/ Wild Rose Press / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Spence Taylor's mother, Rose, is scheduled for a heart transplant. She has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and because of a rare blood type, hearts are not so easy to come by. So when one does become available, Spense is absolutely delirious with joy. A few months before the national elections, the president has a heart attack and needs a heart transplant. Amazingly enough, he is of the same blood type as Rose. White House chief of staff orders the FBI to seize the heart that was going to Rose .. all in the name of democracy. There is no way, Spence will allow his mother's heart to be taken away from her. So begins one of the funniest pursuits ever. Spence, along with his brother, decide to kidnap the heart. They also inadvertently kidnap a cardiac surgery resident. Jumping into a '65 Mustang they are barely ahead of the all the president's men. Spence will stop at nothing to keep the heart for his mother. The FBI will continue the chase until they have the heart back ... or they stop the kidnappers by any means possible. The story-telling is sheer funny! One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. I loved the characters .. the conversations are priceless. I can hardly wait to see what's next. Many thanks to the author / Farrago Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this funny, funny novel. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

When Private Investigator Kelly Pruett is asked by a friend to locate her father, she doesn't have the heart to say no. But the missing person case turns deadly when she does, indeed, locate the woman's father .... his body in a car that is submerged beneath the water. She's told by the local police to back off her investigation, the local mafia type man and his bodyguard, her ex-husband, and her current boyfriend. Having inherited her father's detective agency, and being her father's daughter .. she just isn't going to stop until the case is solved. She's tenacious if nothing else. Her stubbornness just might end her career ... and her life. Packed full of twists and turns , lies and secrets, the plot is well constructed with plenty of suspects to follow who all have a reason to have wanted the dead man .. well, dead. The characters are solidly drawn and Kelly is intriguing in her view of the world around her. The suspense maintains a high level and leads to an unexpected explosive conclusion. Many thanks to the author / Camel Press Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this cozy mystery. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

4.5 STARS Phoenix, 1933: Great War veteran and rising star Gene Hammons lost his job as a homicide detective when he tried to prove that a woman was wrongly convicted of murder to protect a well-connected man. This is an extremely well-written historical crime fiction buried in the history of Arizona. The author, himself, is from the area and he has done a terrific job in bringing Phoenix to light from that era. Barry Goldwater, Nominee for President in 1964 is mentioned as well as others of that ilk. The schools, the landmarks, and I do believe this story was taken from real life events during that time. The characters are well-known and those that aren't are solidly defined. Everything meshes. There is suspense from the first page leading to an unexpected ending with twists and turns in between. Many thanks to the author / Poisoned Pen Press / Netgalley for the digital copy of this most interesting crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is well-written, a little on the creepy side, with characters that are solidly drawn. Grace comes across as a very troubled woman, and unpredictable in her actions. There's a lot going on between the covers of this book, and every bit of it is compelling. The ending was quite surprising.

Rufus Orton is an author ... needing money. He accepts a position teaching creative writing to inmates at a local prison. Prison Officer Annabeth Harris went to great lengths to get him to accept the position. Annabeth loves her job .. but she has a secret that she's held for the past 15 years. Griffin Cox is behind bars. A convicted offender, he states over and over again that he is innocent of those crimes he's been accused of. He figures he's been there for 7 years and its time for him to leave. He's made a plan .. but he has to have a place in the classroom with Orton and Harris. Let the games begin ..... Suspenseful from the very beginning, this is a cleverly written plot with characters that pop. Orton and Harris are interesting is how they relate to each other and each seem to be holding secrets from the other. There's lot of action, some amazing twists that lead to a totally unexpected conclusion. As the author spent 15 years as a journalist including 7 years as a crime reporter, I expected a certain amount of credibility. I was not disappointed. Many thanks to the author / Canongate Books / Severn House / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed are unbiased and entirely my own.
