Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lucky Boy

Some books touch the mind and make us think. They make us smarter. We’ve all been influenced by the Cartesian idea, “I think, therefore I am.” Thinking is good, right? It can even help us win Facebook and Twitter arguments. Who doesn’t want to wear that medal around their neck, pin that ribbon on their shirt, or put that trophy in their case? Some books, though, touch the heart and make us feel. They encourage us to act. Have you heard of Spinoza’s idea, “I feel, therefore I am?” Let me do you a solid - https://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/19/books/i-feel-therefore-i-am.html I fall squarely into Spinoza’s impression of what it means to be human. Sure, I want to be smart, knowledgeable, articulate - a scholar. But more so I want to be empathetic, a hands and feet person, a salt-light-dust person. I want to hold a hand. I want to walk beside. I want to be a helper. I want to say (always), “I’m here. Estoy aquí.” I want we to be more important than me. This is why I hope you’ll read Shanthi Sekeran’s novel Lucky Boy. Please read it. Why? Well, in her own words from an article she wrote for REFINERY 29 titled “The Role of the Novelist in Trump’s America”: “The only answer I can fathom is this: reading is an act of witness. Be. An. Act. Of. Witness.

Watcher Jane Goodalls Life with the Chimps
by
Jeanette Winter

For the past few weeks my 4rh graders and I have been reading about Jane Goodall. Jane Goodall: Champion for Chimpanzees by Jodie Shepherd and The Watcher: Jane Goodall’s Life with the Chimps by Jeanette Winter have been our Interactive Read Alouds. As I was reading The Watcher, and got to page 10, I read: Jane traveled to the place in Tanzania where the chimps lived - Gombe. “I wanted to learn things that no one else knew, uncover secrets…” she wrote. I read this to my students with a lot of expression. They love it me when I do that. “This passage INSPIRED me to study whales!” I exclaimed. “That’s what good people do! That’s what good books do! They INSPIRE! I hope this kind of inspiration strikes my 9 and 10-year-olds this school year. I hope we read or write something that inspires them to become lifetime readers and writers. I hope they become life long learners. Jane Goodall is an inspiration. The book is, too
