The Midwife's Promise: Heartbreaking World War 2 historical fiction
by
Eliza Graham
Sally Mander
, December 06, 2023
5 stars, Comfort Amid Atrocities THE MIDWIFE'S PROMISE by Eliza Graham In a dual timeline, Sophie tells us her story, from WWII in France, and 1992. She is a midwife and does all she can to help the mothers and babies in her care. It isn't always easy, sometimes it is just plain hard to do. She helps anyone she comes across, at great risk to herself. Highly recommend. Promises and secrets, both go hand in hand. I received a complimentary copy of #TheMidwifesPromise from #StormPublishing and #NetGalley I was not obligated to post a review. #StrongFemaleProtagonist #WWII #France #USA #Jews #Atrocities #Love #Babies #HistoricalFiction #Midwife #NewEngland #Georgia #Boston #ElizaGraham

Cancer Factory
by
Jim Morris
Sally Mander
, November 18, 2023
This book gives an expose on the employees who have worked in the "cancer factories," specifically the Goodyear Plant using DuPont chemicals in Niagra Falls, New York. The author goes on to tell a little bit about the suffering of workers from all sorts of factories across the USA, ones that the public has heard of, like Karen Silkwood in Oklahoma, in a nuclear plant. And others like the chemical plant that required female workers to have hysterectomies to work in the factory, because the chemicals were proven to cause horrible birth defects. We follow several different people throughout the book; workers who were diagnosed with bladder cancer; Steve Wodka who worked as an investigator to delve into the secrets that the cancer factories were willing to keep. There are probably hundreds of workers out there who will come down with unusual cancers related to jobs working with dangerous chemicals. Highly recommend. "Mindlessly dumping powder into bags..." All of the while, not knowing that their health, safety, and that of their family members are at stake. I received a complimentary copy of #TheCancerFactory from #BeaconPress I wasn't obligated to post a review. #CancerCausingJobs #OSHA #NonFiction #Goodyear #DuPont #History #Crime #PenguinRandomHouse #JimMorris

by
M. V. Melcer

, November 16, 2023
In a confused state, Pilot Nathalie Hart, second in command, comes out of cryo-sleep, not understanding what is going on, or why. She and the crew of her spaceship are on a mission to the distant settlement of Bethesda, which was settled by American missionaries, to find out why the Earth colony stopped transmitting a decade ago. She finds out that the captain has died and she is in charge of the ship. A position that she does not want to be in. The ship is crewed by different factions, that do not trust one another, which will make her job more difficult. Someone has left a mysterious message on Nathalie's cryo-pod, in a language that only she can decipher. The mystery deepens. The story is told with dual timelines, the present and the past. Highly recommend it. It's Your Love: A Deep Haven Novel
by
Rachel D. Russell
Sally Mander
, November 13, 2023
5 stars, Trust Me IT'S YOUR LOVE by Rachel D. Russell Grayson Fox has agreed to return to his hometown of Deep Haven, Minnesota to work as a wrangler at the Trinity Horse Camp for children. Beth Strauss is a native of Deep Haven, where she grew up but never grew out of the small town. She spreads herself too thin by taking on all sorts of side jobs, basically, anything she's asked to do. Grayson and Beth have a small history together, though they'd really rather not have to work together, but, that's what happens, with Beth being Grayson's boss at the camp. I really liked Grayson, he hopes to inspire the children who attend the youth horse camp and he knows his business with horses. "Okay, Horse Whisperer," and "Please Lord, answer this one prayer" are a couple of my favorite quotes. I highly recommend #ItsYourLove for a feel-good enemies-to-lovers inspirational book. I am thankful for the complimentary copy I was under no obligation to post a review. #inspyfic #Christian #contemporary #inspirational #SunrisePublishing #Western #FoxFamilySeries #DeepHavenCollection #YouthHorseCamp #RachelDRussell

War Angel: Korea 1950

Sally Mander
, October 07, 2023
5 stars, Angels of Mercy WAR ANGEL: KOREA 1950 by Mike Weedall The surgical nurses of the Korean War hit the ground running, and they never stopped, all the way through the book. Mary Belanger, a Reserve Army operating nurse is called up to serve in a war that took the armed forces by surprise. Mary doesn't want to go, but she doesn't have a choice. Mary finds herself asked to do many things she's never done and not really wanting to do them either, but soon those things are like second nature to her. "Tell my mother I love her." How can you not love a book like that? From the first moment that I opened the book, I was enthralled and could not put it down. I read it straight through. I thought the ending was a little abrupt, but it is a great story. I received a complimentary copy of #WarAngelKorea1950 from #OutskirtsPress I was not obligated to post a review. Of White Ashes: A WWII historical novel inspired by true events
by
Constance Hays Matsumoto and Kent Matsumoto
Sally Mander
, September 11, 2023
5 stars, Hopelessness Yet another sad, disheartening way that WW2 has affected another group of people. This time, the Japanese Americans, specifically one family living in Hawaii, minding their own business. Ruby's father is taken away to a prison camp on the mainland, and then the rest of the family is sent away from everything they knew and loved. Koji is a Japanese American living in Hiroshima with his family. He is unwillingly forced to manufacture arms for the Japanese war machine. He has to be quite secretive about the land of his birth. Ruby and Koji meet years later in California, but they have differing opinions on what really went on during the war years. I like that the book is based on the authors' true family events. I highly recommend it. Angels of the Resistance: A Novel of Sisterhood and Courage in WWII
by
Noelle Salazar
Sally Mander
, September 26, 2022
5 stars, Aspiring Angels ANGELS OF THE RESISTANCE: A WWII NOVEL By: Noelle Salazar The depth of this novel is amazing. It has the power to make you giggle, cry, wail, and more. Dutch sisters Lien and Elif are two teenage girls who want to join the resistance when the Nazis take over their small village. Their mother doesn't want Lien to join, because she's the baby of the family and thinks Lien is too young. Their father used to take them shooting, and Lien always hit the mark. Her family nicknamed her "Sure Shot." The novel follows their training and missions in the Resistance. Lien rationalizes it with 'A Life for a Life.' I would hope if our country was ever taken over in this way, that I'd have the guts to stand up to the interlopers and be a positive member of the resistance. I'm afraid that I might be too soft. Highly Recommend. I thankfully received a complimentary copy of #angelsoftheresistance from #mira I was under no obligation to post a review. #ww2 #resistance #fighters #innocence #basedontrueevents #original

Hunter Bell is a disillusioned former pastor whose only desire is to be left alone. Quaye is a severely abused and helpless young Irish woman with no prospects. These two join together and become an unstoppable force. Highly recommend. Laura's Shadow: Volume 9
by
Allison Pittman
Sally Mander
, July 26, 2022
4 stars, Not everyone loved Laura Ingalls Wilder LAURA'S SHADOW (DOORS TO THE PAST # 9) by Allison Pittman This is a dual timeline, historical, Christian fiction novel. It is set in De Smet, South Dakota, the times are 1974 when Trixie Gowan is growing up in a multi-generational line of female relatives, and 1890 when Trixie's great grandmother Mariah Patterson, (whom Trixie calls GG) was a young woman, an orphan, living with her newly engaged brother. Everyone in their family knows that Mariah can't stand Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are family secrets and GG is ready to tell Trixie about her pain, through the years. This book has a loose description of a single man sleeping with a single woman, out of wedlock. It doesn't sound so out of the ordinary, in today's modern times, but in 1890, that is something that was simply not done. It may come as a shock to someone expecting a Christian historical fiction novel. My favorite character in this book is Merrill Gowan. He is a man with heart and the capability to love, much more than several of the other characters. I am thankful for the complimentary copy of #laurasshadow in the #doorstothepastseries I was under no obligation to post a review. #mystery #inspyfiction #historicalfiction #coverlove #allisonpittman #newrelease2022

The Apple Creek Announcement
by
Wanda E. Brunstetter
Sally Mander
, July 22, 2022
5 stars, When you feel incomplete THE APPLE CREEK ANNOUNCEMENT by Wanda E. Brunstetter Andrea is a piano teacher and artist who feels drawn to painting Amish scenery. She doesn't know why, but she is drawn in that direction time and time again. She's in her thirties and had almost given up on getting married and having a family, then she met local veterinarian Brandon. They decide to marry, and then she finds out she was adopted. Andrea comes across as a little immature, but I think that is to be expected when you are cosseted and protected by your loving parents. Her first feelings are of betrayal, why didn't her parents tell her that she was adopted? She feels drawn to identify her birth parents, putting her relationship with Brandon on hold and turning away from everyone as she begins her journey. This is a stand-alone book, it means a little more to me because I have read the other two books in this series. They give you more of the background happenings and relationships, as you go into this novel. Highly recommend. #inspyfiction #favoritebooks #newrelease2022 I gratefully received a complimentary copy of #theapplecreekannouncement from #barbourfiction I was under no obligation to post a review. #inspirationalfiction #contemporary #barbourpublishing #ChristianFiction #morals #adoption #Amish #artist #wandaEbrunstetter

Beneath the Bending Skies
by
Jane Kirkpatrick

, July 20, 2022
I love the feeling that the author Jane Kirkpatrick is able to stir up and draw me headlong into her stories. She takes a little true history and weaves a beautiful story around it. Mollie promised her mother she'd care for her father James, right before her beloved mother died. I like how Ms. Kirkpatrick includes the pronunciations of Indian tribes, so you know how they should be pronounced, like Salish=[Sail-ish], Kootenai=[Coo-ten-i], and Pend d'Oreille=[Pon-door-ray]. #favoriteauthor #newrealease2022 #revellbooks @bakerbookhouse #bakerbookhouseWith much gratefulness and enthusiasm, I received a complimentary copy of #beneaththebendingskies from @revellbooks I was under no obligation to post a review. #1860stimeperiod #historicalfiction #FlatheadIndians #Montana #NezPerceIndians #inspyfiction #coverlove #ChristianFiction #inspirationalfiction #janekirkpatrick @janekirkpatrick #favoritebooks

The Heart of the Mountains
by
Pepper Basham
Sally Mander
, July 05, 2022
Jeb and Cora are suffering, they don't think anyone else feels the same way that they do, since they've survived the heartache of war. The book is set in 1919 in the Appalachian Mountains. Jeb has returned home after the war took some of his best friends in the world. Cora has fled there from England, after being pressured to marry an unsuitable man. Cora's brother-a doctor and teacher, and her uncle-a preacher have already called these mountains home for several years. I like Cora and Jeb the best, out of all of the characters. They both have big hearts and are willing to go above what anyone else would be willing to do, to help a person in need. Cora is a nurse, who hopes to use her skills to assist anyone who's willing to accept help from a "flatlander." Jeb works at a local sawmill, and he also has side projects that he keeps himself busy with, to escape his war memories when they start closing in on him. I liked the way the book is in the inspirational, Christian genres, but does not come across as preachy or condescending. Highly recommend. Suitable Companion for the End of Your Life
by

4 stars, Easy way to suicide A SUITABLE COMPANION FOR THE END OF YOUR LIFE by Robert Mcgill What if there was an easy way to suicide? All you had to do was place an order and a few days later, your life ended. Reagan is a long-distance runner, who has suffered an injury and is no longer able to run. She believes that is all she has to live for. She doesn't have anyone that really cares about her, so she decides to take the easy way out. She never expected to care about anyone new. This is an interesting take on a #dystopian future. Definitely readable, I'll probably re-read it in the future. Suicide House
by
Charlie Donlea
Sally Mander
, July 01, 2022
I received an awesome prize pack from the publisher that accompanied the ARC of the book. It had: 3 pencils from Westmont Preparatory High School (the fictional school in the book), a flattened, stamped Lucky Penny, a small, red candle, a letter from the administrator of the school, and a small journal. This book sounded interesting. A suicide house, that teens were going to and killing themselves, by stepping in front of trains. Sounds creepy, too. At the school, all students are encouraged to journal all of their thoughts and feelings. The thing is, a lot of people have something to hide and their journal in the wrong person's hand spells disaster. The Seniors at Westmont Prep are hazing selected Juniors with their game of MAN IN THE MIRROR. The Juniors have a list of quests they must accomplish in order to become members of the secret society. Never let your candle blow out. I was provided the fun prize pack and a complimentary copy of this book by Kensington Publishers with no obligation to post a review.

The Barbour Simplified KJV [Wildflower Medley]
by
Compiled by Barbour Staff
Sally Mander
, June 23, 2022
The KJV of the Holy Bible is arduous. It is quite hard to read and grasp the meaning of the words. I leaped at the chance to read and review this copy of The Simplified KJV [King James Version] of the Holy Bible. The Simplified KJV is easy to read and understand, especially since the original KJV was first published in 1611. As you can imagine, everyone talks and probably thinks differently than Christians did in 1611. KJV has always been the "GoTo" Bible, but I have always aimed for a NAS [New American Standard] or NIV [New International Version]. This Holy Bible has wider outside margins for notes or Bible Doodling. There is an index at the beginning, separation of the books of the Bible, Old Testament, and New Testament. It has an amazing SKJV Revision Process, so you can see exactly what the 1611 word that was used, and the 2022 word that Barbour Publishing used in its place. There is a dictionary/concordance to help you with your studies, and also full-color maps to help you get a feel for the locations where things happened in the bible. I highly recommend it, if you are a Christian, a new believer, a non-believer, or simply curious, this Simplified KJV Holy Bible is for you. Anyone can use this copy, easily. With much gratitude, I received a complimentary copy of #thesimplifiedKJV #wildflowermedley from #BarbourPublishingInc #BarbourBibles #BarbourStaff #Barbour I was not required to post a review.
