Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. They Drown Our Daughters

I read this book while working through my complicated relationship with my own mother. When I was about halfway through the book, my mother died unexpectedly. Suddenly, I realized: Monroe GETS IT. She understands generational trauma on a profound level, speaking from mother to daughter all through a family tree. How it rots us from the inside, until we never have a chance to escape it and we don't know why. This is a story for the cycle breakers, the mothers who would do anything for their daughters, and the daughters who never knew how much their mothers went through. All set against the captivating backdrop of Cape Disappointment and the gripping horror of the family curse they face. It's full of twists and turns, and ends with both sorrow and hope. I couldn't get enough of it, and it genuinely was just the book I needed at this time in my life. The best kind of horror is the kind used to tell a meaningful story, and They Drown Our Daughters delivers on both the scares and the depth.

Rarely has a book of poetry hit me so deeply since picking up Mary Oliver for the first time. There is something raw and poignant about Beers' work, where you close the book and feel as if you're walking away from a friend you've come to care for deeply. She speaks with passion and grace about the most difficult subjects, and there is power in her words. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone looking for good poetry, whether new to the genre or looking for new voices to consider. Beers' work is a treasure, and it's only a shame it isn't publicized more.
