Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Gus & Me The Story of My Granddad & My First Guitar
by
Keith Richards, Theodora Richards
Kenneth
, April 24, 2015
Kenneth Horne, April 24, 2015 (view all comments by Kenneth Horne) Just the "road warrior" voice of Keith Richards reading his story aloud is worth the adventure. No, you needn't be a Rolling Stones fan to enjoy this kids book...but what if your children hear this and crank up "Jumpin' Jack Flash?" Keith might say,"Aha, mission accomplished!" Seriously, consider how cool Gus (Keith's granddad) is in the story. He entices young master Richards by keeping the guitar just out of reach. As Kid Keith put it..."By the time we reached Granddad's house I was all teeth."

Sum Forty Tales from the Afterlives
by
David Eagleman
Kenneth
, May 17, 2010
Weird and wonderful observations. David Eagleman's ideas about the afterlife trigger readers' questions previously unformed or unconsidered. Mr. Eagleman will be in performance with Brian Eno later this month which makes this an excellent time to read his work.

Complete Stories Of J G Ballard
by
J G Ballard
Kenneth

J.G. Ballard surpasses the "handle" of science fiction writer. His stories are more a tour of the unexpected mixed with a twist of unique reality.

Fellinis Book Of Dreams
by
Federico Fellini
Kenneth
, July 28, 2008
Thankfully Fellini documented his dreams for fans and scholars to ponder long after he went to the great movie set in the sky. The Book of Dreams is a humorous and psychedelic "captain's log" not to be missed.

Fraction Of The Whole
by
Steve Toltz
Kenneth
, February 18, 2008
A Fraction of the Whole is a mix of A Confederacy of Dunces and a pie chart from an insane asylum as depicted by National Geographic...confusing (a plus), funny, and great.

Love Without
by
Stahl, Jerry
Kenneth
, July 15, 2007
My wife paid Jerry Stahl's Love Without: Stories the ultimate compliment: "Would you stop laughing and turn out the light!?"...followed by, "Stop saying 'Whoa!' and go read it downstairs!" When a short story collection jumps from Dick Cheney, princess phones, and (holy hula Joyce) 'Finnegan's Waikiki,' what's a poor boy to do?

Memorial
by
Bruce Wagner
Kenneth
, January 04, 2007
Bruce Wagner continues to wave the Donald Barthelme flag in his novel Memorial. The Herlihy family's aspirations and fears unfold like a surrealistic personals section of a large city newspaper. Humor is followed by tragedy, and in the usual Wagnerian slant, resolved in off-center comedy. Save yourself a trip to L.A. -- get the margaritas a'swirlin', crank up Jonesy's Jukebox, and read Memorial.
