Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I thought I was too old to enjoy horror or vampire-type novels. I don't know how I ended up with this novel on my Nook. But I'm glad I did. It is a page-turner and definitely hard to put down once past the first 100 pages. Read it. You won't be sorry.

To Kill a Mockingbird
by
Lee, Harper

, August 29, 2009
I read Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird many years ago, and although it may seem a book for adolescents, it most definitely is not. Then, while browsing a local book store last year, I found a hardcover 40th Anniversary Edition and bought it for my 13-year-old grandson. When he had completed reading it, I asked his thoughts. I was rewarded with the answer that it is now his favorite book (and at 13 he's a prolific reader). I hope he remembers those feelings well enough to recommend this book or present it to some future 13 year old. No one could ever be sorry for reading this book.

Plain Speaking An Oral Biography Truman
by
Merle Miller
William Pieske
, August 29, 2009
First, I'm amazed no one has yet commented on this fantastic book. In his own words, without a hint of arrogance or conceit but drawn out by the skillful questioning of Merle Miller, you learn what an incredible person Harry Truman would have been to have known. He was honest to a fault, direct and never pointed the finger at others in blame (he popularized the phrase The Buck Stops Here). If you like history, you'll love this first person interview of Harry S Truman. If should be mandatory reading for anyone who wins election to the office of President of the United States.
