Delightfully witty! Definitely my favorite of the year. Does not need describing; just buy it, read it, and share it.

Harrowing, but well worth the pain. One of few modern books I believe will be thought of as great literature in years to come. One might fairly call this book "life changing."

Amazing story. Loved the characters, with all their flaws. Adored the beautiful use of language--multiple languages, used poetically, humorously, sometimes excruciatingly. Even loved the politically incorrect but truly happy ending.

Sharp Objects

Interesting premise, juvenile execution. Grammatical and word choice errors annoying. Important characters (e.g. ghostly stepfather, wicked granny) never developed. Unrealistic crime, unrealistic investigation, unrealistic aftermath. Does not even attempt to describe the trial. Switcheroo of an ending. Excessive talk about violence, drugs, sex, and alcohol does not make this into a grown-up story.

No, it isn't great literature. But my children LOVE this book. They enjoy the crazy things done to the slugs--and shudder at the slugs' revenge.

Wise Blood

Excruciatingly grotesque. This novel is to literature what coprology is to medicine: fascinating, hideous, and ultimately meaningless. There is not one redeeming virtue in any of the characters. Their illogical thinking results (logically) in bizarre, but hardly amusing, behavior. If I had to live among such folk, I would blind myself, too. "Muvseevum" may be the only worthwhile word in the book.
