First Barbara Kingsolver book I have ever read...and I loved it. The story alternated between 2 families that live/lived in the same house 100 years apart. The house is in disrepair and so are both of the families. Ms. Kingsolver gives you a glimpse of each family, their problems and how each approach's saving the family as well as the house. Poetic and lyrical in her writing I have fallen for Ms. Kingsolver and will be seeking out more of her writings.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
by
J.D. Vance

, July 13, 2018
I read this book to understand why so many working class Americans voted for Trump. It really explains a lot the problems that middle to lower working class Americans face in our new America. How families can take care of each other as well as tear each other apart, making life for the kids growing up in these situations a total nightmare. JD Vance was lucky enough to have a Grandmother that cared deeply about him and helped him overcome several of the adversities he faced growing up in a very depressed economy. If you ever wondered why people will vote against their best interest, will deny a news story calling it Fake News, or why we have a drug epidemic...read this book...it really helped me understand a whole population of Americans that I have not encountered in my liberal life.

When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir
by
Patrisse Khan Cullors, asha bandele

, December 14, 2017
Patrisse's story is not a new story, but it is one that needs to be told as often as possible. How she came to start a movement for Black Lives Matter is simple...she was tired of her family & friends being targeted for the crime of being black. Patrisse tells us her story of growing up in LA, living in a food desert, watching her brother's be hassled by police, not having access to the simple necessity's that millions of other Americans have access to...why? because she is Black. The story of trying to find her brother after he was arrested, not being able to located him for 4 days in the LA corrections system. Hearing about children who are shot by security and/or police because it they were black. She had to make a difference, she had to stand up and tell the country that enough was enough. That BLACK LIVES MATTER!!

Bream Gives Me Hiccups
by
Jesse Eisenberg

I put this book on hold at the library after I read a review, I did not realize that the author was Jessie Eisenberg the actor till I picked up the book. I had just finished watching the movie "Zombieland" and was hoping that I would not be let down by an actor trying to write. I was happily surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I think my favorite was the letters from a student to their high school counselor, lot's of funny stuff. This is a great book to take with you when you go home for the holidays.

I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You
by

A relationship story about two people who were once very much in love. Richard the artist who just had an art show made specifically to sell, in the artist world this is very taboo. Anne his upcoming lawyer wife who is beautiful and very French. The books opens with Richard mourning the loss of his mistress to another man. Anne finds out about the affair after it's over and though she knows it's over she has checked out as his wife. There is a lot for both of these characters to overcome and they make several mistakes when trying to rekindle their marriage. It will take more than memories of how much they use to love each other to over come each of their mistakes and become a loving family again. I both loved and hated these characters which kept me interested enough keep reading.

Art of Crash Landing
by
Melissa DeCarlo

I loved this book so much I read it in less than a week (which is very fast for me). I could not put it down. It's the story of Mattie Wallace a true screw up. As the story begins Mattie is putting all her belongings in her Malibu, leaving Nick the asshole. She is broke, pregnant and has nowhere to go. She ends up at her step fathers only to learn of a possible inheritance from a grandmother she never knew in Oklahoma. To say Mattie's up bringing was messed up is an understatement. Living with an alcoholic mother is just one of Mattie's many issues. She is a smart ass with a chip on her shoulder and she makes poor choices on a regular basis. When she arrives in Gandy Oklahoma to receive her inheritance she meets people in the small town that knew her mother. She learns a lot of secrets about her mothers past and tries to make sense of what happened, why her Mother left Gandy and never looked back.

Strange Sites Uncommon Homes & Gardens of the Pacific Northwest
by
Jim Christy
cupcakemacfastlane
, April 24, 2015
One of the better books about folk environments in the Pacific Northwest. I have a love of these places and have sought out several that are in the book. If you love these gardens and houses pick up this book...go see the houses before they are all torn down. A couple of them are already gone, but the spirit of the creative people that lived and built their surroundings will live on. These people were visionaries, creating space for themselves that others had trouble understanding.

I Take You

Kennedy, Eliza

A fun and fast read. I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did, I don't usually go for chick lit. The book takes place in Key West the week before Lily is to be married to Will. Lilly has a problem with fidelity and her family has doubts about the wedding. This is an excellent vacation read, it's not your typical chick lit.

Sudden Light
by
Garth Stein

, February 09, 2015
I savored this book as I read it because I didn't want it to end. The story of a young boy going back to where his father grew up outside Seattle. Garth Stein describes the landscape with a mastery that makes you feel like you are deep in the woods where the old mansion is located. Written from the perspective of Trevor Riddell the son of Jones Riddell, who is returning home to help his sister Serena settle the families very large estate. This is the story of ghosts, betrayed families and of course love. It is a wonderful read.

Hand stitched Home

I have been a fan of Pendleton fabric since I was very young. I never miss a chance to stop at the Pendleton Woolen Mills when I'm in the area. Susan Beal has written several craft books and this marriage of Susan & Pendleton seems to me the perfect union. Her projects are simple and creative, some of the projects use as little as 1/4 a yard of material because let's face it Pendleton Wool is not cheap. I love the clutch that was designed by Sarai Mitnik (Founder of the local pattern company Colette), it combines 1/2 a yard of wool with leather to make a simple yet stunning clutch. Of course Susan's quilting projects are wonderful and an inspiration, a Pendleton Quilt would make a great gift for anyone that you love. Susan was also granted access to the the Pendleton archives and she provides a nice Pendleton timeline in the back of the book.

Quilt Talk: 12 Chatty Projects: Paper-Pieced Alphabet with Symbols & Numbers [With Pattern(s)]

An excellent reference book for any quilter. Sam has provided an entire upper and lower case set of letters for your next quilt, as well as some extra symbols. Her instructions are clear and her projects are simple. What better way to say "I love you" than on a quilt in large letters!

Jennifer Clement writes a very poetic story of Basquiat and his lover Susanne of several years. Susan words show an unconditional love for Basquiat and how she came to deal with his fame, his drug use and ultimately his death.

How to Catch a Frog
by
Heather Ross
cupcakemacfastlane
, October 28, 2014
I have been a huge fan of Heather Ross for awhile, her fabric reminds me of fairy tales. Reading this book gave me a whole different type of respect. She tells funny and interesting stories of her childhood growing up on a large piece of property in Vermont, stories of her roaming the country side looking for the perfect swimming hole, and the heart breaking stories of her relationship with her mother . She tells strange, interesting and some times very disturbing stories of growing up in a dysfunctional family and how she over came that environment by finding what she loved (drawing) and a person to love her and put her first. Through out the book there are interesting vignettes of very real life projectors & skills such as how to build a bird nesting station, how to make fleece pants and of course how to catch frogs. I was luck enough to get a signed print in my book.

This is an excellent reference book for artists and crafters. Great chapter on nature printing, lots of information in the screen printing chapter. As an artist that likes to work in textile as well as on paper it gives me a lot of different techniques to use in my art as well as on fabric for quilts or clothing. Very detailed instructions for the processes and bonus pages of how to "explore the possibilities".
