Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. What would it be like if suddenly, the whole world fell apart? Dies the Fire offers one well thought out and compelling answer to this question. The characters are capable and interesting, and the problems they face are believable, as are their solutions. World wrecking was never done so well.

The Hunger Games: Hunger Games 1

I couldn't put this book down. A dystopian novel of a future I hope we never see, it was delicious, subversive--the kind of young adult novel that adult readers cut their teeth on. It made me, a middle-aged reader, think. It surprised me at every turn, and I devoured the sequel as soon as I could get my hands on it. I can hardly wait for the third book. And I'm going to make sure my younger relatives also get hold of it.

This book *rocks!* I needed a book that gave me all the information I needed to grow my own vegetables--and what to do when things go wrong, and this one is just about all you need.
