Loving Day

What a brutal dissection Johnson has performed! This is as American as a story can be right now. Yet it's a story that I had never heard. Page by page and chapter by chapter, I wanted more and more from Warren--this until now all but voiceless American archetype. Warren is all of us. We are him. This book is for anyone who has ever called (or even thought of) himself or herself "white" or "black."

American is fortunate to have an Iraq War veteran so talented. Every war needs a Tim O'Brien. Maybe Powers has assumed that role for this recent war. What an opportunity to inhabit the point-of-view of a solider on the ground in this war that will be with us, over there and back here at home, for a long, long time.
