Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. A Non-Swimmer Considers Her Mikvah: On Becoming Jewish After Fifty
by

I spent a rainy Portland afternoon reading this moving and revelatory memoir. With great directness and wry humor, the author shares her experience, including all of the vulnerabilities, the contradictions, and the unsolveds. The final chapters, especially, took my breath away. A friend who's very open about not having been born Jewish (her husband was), always looks a little uncomfortable when someone refers to her as a "convert". Now that I've read this honest, unflinching, funny, touching, and practical book, I have some insight into why: Conversion is a transitory process, not a permanent state. Thank you for that, Mary/Miriam.

Funny, touching, beautifully written. I’m not a man and never have been, but I found myself recommending it to many (no pun intended) guys I know.
