Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Love Hunter

What a joy it is to read a work by Jon Hassler. Though not as compelling as some of his other works (THE GREEN JOURNEY, NORTH OF HOPE, STAGGERFORD, to name a few), THE LOVE HUNTER is well worth the time spent meeting and growing to love and hate its cast of characters. I learned more about duck hunting in this novel than I thought possible.

North Of Hope

Hassler is one of the finest authors Minnesota has produced, and NORTH OF HOPE ranks as one of his most effective accomplishments. As a novel of religious faith, it knows no equal. As a depiction of the special life style found in the northern section of Minnesota, it is of enormous value. True to his promise, Hassler provides a welcome glimpse into the lives of numerous compelling characters. This one is well-worth picking up; it will be difficult for one to put it down.

Cry The Beloved Country

It is hard to believe that it has taken me this long to experience the literary pleasures that this book holds. It is a classic and deservedly so. Don't let the less than satisfying film version keep you from digging deeply into this remarkable novel of hope and faith.

THE CITY OF CHURCHES is a marvelous work of significant value. NewSouth is to be commended for putting this work and others of its kind between covers. Kudos to all concerned.
