Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Tillamook 1952

“[Wright] dealt well with the mystery of the plot and the setting while developing a character who is able to grow and change with his experiences. I liked that; a man's story that is able to explore the ability or inability for people to relate to each other. Thanks for a good story!” —Janice Nichols McLemore, Silverdale, Washington

Baker City 1948

“Beautifully written with great attention given to plotting and pace. Baker City 1948 had me absorbed to the very end. Philip’s voice and perspective had the appropriate combination of simplicity and emotion. By the end of the book, I felt I had a solid grasp of the entire Wade family, not to mention the town of Baker City in 1948.” —Hunter Gregg, Portland, Oregon

Roseburg 1959

“What a skilful and engrossing read. I thought the resurrection of Roseburg and Ross Bagby were a necessary commentary on small-town society and the state of marriage today. I too was surprised at the end with the revelation of the fun four and thought it was a masterful touch to the intrigue of characters.” —Max Penner, Kansas City, MO

Driving To Vernonia
by
George Byron Wright

Where do you go when you’ve hit rock bottom, when your wife of 27 years has left you and you’ve lost the only job you’ve ever really had? Edmund Joyce Kirby-Smith, so desperate for some kind of diversion that Martha Stewart’s craft projects are beginning to look good to him, doesn’t know how to begin to reclaim his life. Goaded into action by his sister, he sets out to find “Dick Vic,” a mentor from an earlier life. Like many “road stories”, “Driving to Vernonia” is as much about the journey as Edmund’s final destination. George Byron Wright, who lives in Portland, is the author of three previous novels set in small-town Oregon. —Kate Schneider, Special to The Oregonian
