Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society

I really enjoyed this story about England's Guernsey Island in the years following its occupation by the Germans during World War Two. The personal experiences and memories of several islanders in letters to a English writer tell the story and it's a very interesting one. Rationing and food shortages, getting along with the Germans-or not, subversive acts, serious and not so serious, the entire absence of children for two years; they had been shipped to the mainland for safety before the invasion. These are some of the details that make this a fascinating and sometimes heart-breaking, sometimes humourous story. The title refers to a book group and this is one I'd like to belong to. Literary references, history, a warm and poignant story, I liked it all. A nice gift book too, my aunts, uncles, and grandparents would like it for the memories alone. Highly recommended.

The Dawning of the Day: A Jerusalem Tale
by

An inspiring tale of a simple Jewish man who lives his faith through everything he does in the normal routines of his day in the Sephardic community of Jerusalem. Even while Ezra Siman Tov cleans and presses prayer shawls in a laundry he feels close to the faith of those wear them, usually young grooms whose brides have given them as the traditional wedding gift. As the secular world slowly erodes the traditional ways of his old neighborhood, he continues to love God and Torah. He is known to everyone as a storyteller and is surrrounded in life by holy and sometimes eccentric characters who are accustomed to stopping him and saying "Ezra, tell us a story!". Viewed as a pious man by others, Ezra does not feel that he is because he carries a secret sin and is burdened with the heart-breaking loss of a daughter he does not speak of. Ultimately this is a love story, the love between a man and his God who comforts him through all things. A story for everyone, religious or not, for who is not fed by the things of the spirit? The writing is beautiful. This story is poignant, tender, perfect.

A stunning memoir by the author about his parents who are Holocaust survivors. We are given the somewhat romanticised version from his own boyhood memories then slowly the real story emerges.Powerful and well-written.Winner of the Prix Goncourt and the Prix Wizo(Jewish Interest).
