Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I Want My Hat Back

Very few picture books wed words and visuals as brilliantly and hilariously as I Want My Hat Back. As the main character goes through several emotions as he attempts to track down his treasured property, the dialogue is cleverly color-coded to match the various characters, and the deceptively simple illustrations convey emotion and expression vividly and descriptively to delight readers of all ages. The resolution of the story implies a potentially drastic action, but the overall impact of this fun and clever book is delightful.

Night Circus
by
Erin Morgenstern

If I could marry a book, I would marry this one. If I could write a book, I really, really wish I had these words and ideas in my head, so that I could have written this one. I want to dive in and live in The Night Circus. Morgenstern is a beautiful writer and the world and characters she has created are interesting and engaging - even those characters - and perhaps especially - who are morally ambiguous. I would give a great - very great - deal for Le Cirque des Reves to be real (interestingly there is a group of people within the novel who become obsessed with it and form their own sort of support group, and I can sympathize). The Night Circus is so effortlessly and gorgeously written, I felt a wrench every time I had to put it down. It reminds me powerfully of The Prestige, but more fanciful, and it reminds me of Ray Bradbury at his best and most mysterious. The novel haunted me long past the moment that I turned the last page.
