Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant?
by
Roz Chast
pandora
, March 18, 2015
Hilarious and heartbreaking, Roz Chast's illustrated memoir is brutally honest about her parents' decline in their final years, her complicated relationship with them and the indignities of aging. Getting older isn't for sissies but this book will make those of us caring for aging parents laugh out loud and feel less alone

Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty
by
Roberts, Dorothy
pandora
, August 30, 2012
If you care about women, health disparities, human rights or maternity care, this book is essential reading. Roberts goes into depth about the history of eugenics, birth control and the experience of black women in this country. Lucid and well written, Roberts raises important questions about our society, health and race. Her extensive footnotes are a treasure trove for anyone who wants to learn more about any of these areas.

Then Came You
by
Jennifer Weiner
pandora
, August 27, 2012
This novel explores reproductive technology from the perspective of an egg donor, a surrogate, an older trophy wife and her step-daugter. I laughed, I cried and I enjoyed chick lit that engaged interesting questions with humanity and empathy (though limited realism).

I want to be Aud Torvigen when I grow up! A former police lieutenant, Torvigen moves between the sophistication of her upbrining and the violence of her impulses. This fast-paced mystery satisfies my inner action-movie fan while also providing a compelling heroine and glimpses into Scandinavian culture.

I love this book! These photographs of miniatures in urban settings are charming and disturbing, by turns and simultaneously. Too small to qualify as a coffee table book but these pictures make me smile.

Stella Hardesty stars in this mystery as a "mature" heroine. A widow & survivor of domestic violence, Stella has made made it her job to help other women in similar situations but this time she's helping a friend's husband who's been implicated when a dead body appears. A healthy dose of comedy makes this a novel that leaves you smiling.

The Last Shot

Darcy Frey
pandora

Is basketball the way out of the projects? A year in the lives of four high school players suggests that athletics can't compensate for failures in education. This eloquent book serves as an indictment of college recruiters and the NCAA as well as how we as a society fail students from poor neighborhoods.

After the Golden Age
by
Carrie Vaughn
pandora
, July 30, 2011
Ever wonder what it would be like to be a superhero? "Soon I will be invincible" offered hilarious insight but Carrie Vaughn's concerned with what it would be like to have superheros for parents. Celia West struggles with making her way in the world but that journey is complicated by having super parents. A thoroughly enjoyable summer read (if a bit predictable) with a different twist on old school heroes.

It Gets Better Coming Out Overcoming Bullying & Creating a Life Worth Living
by
Dan Savage, Terry Miller
pandora
, March 23, 2011
Such an important message. While LGBT people become more visible, growing up different is still painful and often dangerous. With the spate of recent suicides resulting from bullying, everyone who cares about young people should get a copy for themselves, their kids, their local school and anyone who interacts with young people.

Mockingjay
by
Collins, Suzanne
pandora
, January 02, 2011
this culmination of the best action/adventure trilogy to combine greek mythology, the depravity of reality tv and the need for revolution features not only compelling characters and a heart-racing story, Collins also creates a strong female protagonist, recognizably flawed but also truely inspirational. A fantastic read!

A beautifully written look into Saudi Arabia shared through an engrossing mystery. Nayir al-Sharqi is a compelling narrartor, at turns alien to "western" eyes and incredibly resonate in his loyalty and humanity. This eloquent story allows readers to gain insight in subtle and unexpected ways. A must read!

Juliet Naked
by
Nick Hornby
pandora
, March 24, 2010
Nick Hornby has done it again! Tucker Crowe is a musician whose hayday has passed for all but a small community of internet-connected obsessives. Annie, whose partner is a committed "Crowologist", is begining to question his sanity and their relationship. "Juliet, Naked" is a hilarious story of lonely people trying to sort out what is important to them. Another of Hornby's good-at-heart but rubbish-at-life protagonists who will make you laugh out loud and perhaps even shed a tear.

Soon I Will Be Invincible
by
Austin Grossman

Fantastic comic novel about the quodian lives of superheros and supervillans. In the gleeful but knowing tone of "the Incredibles", "Soon I will be invincible" takes you inside the internal lives of the superpowered demonstrating that everyone has insecurities and problems (even if some of us are trying to hide the heat signature of our first nuclear reactor...) I didn't read comic books as a kid but this makes me think I may have been missing out

Beka Cooper 01 Terrier A Tortall Legend

Tamora Pierce

the latest Tamora Pierce novel for young adults with a very important twist: Becca's beat is far from the luxurious world of nobility - she's learning to be a cop. It's delightful to find that pierce's storytelling magic works as well from the persepctive of the Lower City (as we learned with George!) This compelling read has all the elements of a good mystery and is a terrific addition to the world of Tortall

Daughter of the Lioness 01 Tricksters Choice
by
Tamora Pierce
pandora
, February 15, 2007
One of the best adventure stories ever! Fans of harry potter will appreciate the fast pacing and detailed characters but this outstanding tale of duty and revolution holds a special place in my heart because "Aly Homewood" continues Tamora Pierce's tradition of strong heroines with a twist. Alanna's daughter has the strength and skills of her parents but is learning to build her own place in the world adding nuance and challenges many of us face growning up to a fabulous tale. Young adult novels will never be the same!
