Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Between Pacific Tides 5th Edition 1985
by
Edward F Ricketts
Robert Ewing
, November 15, 2006
This edition has been completely revised and losses a great deal of Ed Ricketts philosophy and heart. It does have the John Steinbeck?s forward to the third edition. But if you want to observe littoral life through Ed Ricketts? eyes at physical and metaphysical levels you need to read the third edition or earlier. I still read Steinbeck?s introduction before I take a grandchild to the tide pools for the first time. ?Every new eye applied to the peep hole which looks out at the world may fish in some new beauty and some new pattern, and the world of the human mind must be enriched by such fishing.? And from Ed Ricketts, ?In connection with Thais, a mild dissertation on birth control, prenatal care, and race suicide seems to be almost mandatory . . .? page 190, 3rd edition. Observations like this let you see the character behind Doc in "Cannery Row."
