Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Perish Twice
by
Robert B Parker

, July 11, 2007
If you like Sue Grafton's wise-cracking detective Kinsey Milhone, meet Robert B. Parker's counterpart, Sunny Randall. Written in Parker's usual economy of words and sprinkling of dry humor, this is an enjoyable, quick-read mystery.

Ethan Frome

The prose is lush and descriptive in this tragedy of entrapment and unrequited love. If you have never read or don't usually read the classics, make this an exception. A quick read, it is a stirring story and refreshing in its depiction of restraint in personal relationships not often seen in our times.

Marley & Me Life & Love with the Worlds Worst Dog
by
John Grogan

Dog lover or not, you will be charmed by this book, which covers all the emotions from joy to sorrow, but mostly disbelief: how could a family actually endure all the antics of that dog? I found the writing to be delightful and often funny, after all, the author is a columnist by profession. A quick, entertaining read.

Even if you have never been lucky enough to visit Ireland, this memoir will bring you delight, amazement, even heartache. Totally charming, this tale of leaving New York City for a rural area of County Clare is a well-written quick read that never disappoints.

Stupid Sock Creatures Making Quirky Lovable Figures from Cast Off Socks
by
John Murphy
Cindy
, May 09, 2007
Who doesn't have single socks? John Murphy shows you how to transform them into "quirky, lovable figures" with detailed directions, hints and drawings, plus pictures of his own weird little critters. Even if you never stitch a single one, it is a fun book to browse, with many witty remarks, even bios of the goofy sock creatures and a short color cartoon.

Most Wanted

Jacquelyn Mitchard

Riveting novel of despair, yet hope, tenderness yet cruelty, told from the viewpoints of teenage Arley and her lawyer and ally, Annie. A story even more compelling than her previous "The Deep End of the Ocean'.

Eva Moves The Furniture
by

This is the tender story of a motherless girl who grew into a young woman frequently visited by the spirits of an unknown woman and young girl. The book follows her relatively short life as a student, nurse and eventually wife and mother, gradually revealing the mystery behind her elusive visitors. I'll be looking for other works from this delightful author.

Dangerous Husband
by
Jane Shapiro
Cindy
, November 03, 2006
Mayhem and thoughts of murder are intriguing, but entertaining? Amusing? Jane Shapiro artfully weaves a story of a mid-life marriage that keeps the reader guessing, written in a witty style with more clever dialogue and vocabulary than I?ve read in several weeks worth of novels, right down to the final sentence.
