Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Weekends at Bellevue: Nine Years on the Night Shift at the Psych ER
by

A tremendous look at the scary, yet fascinating world of a Psych Emergency Room. Amazing accounts of mental illnesses, their diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Holland also discusses her personal issues of dealing with her patients and profession. Interesting issues arise beyond standard diagnose, then treat scenarios.

Not what I expected, but not a disappointment either. Provides an interesting perspective of a member of the French Resistance, covering her underground activity, imprisonment, forced labor and abuse, etc. In addition to the important historical information this account provides, it also stands as a wonderful example of positive thinking.

Place of My Own The Architecture of Daydreams
by

I was a little disappointed because I expected more about enjoying the results of the construction of this cabin. This story stops at the point where the construction is complete. The book includes interesting history of architecture, architectural criticism, building materials and construction. Not what I was expecting, but a fun, interesting story. The author's website shows a few more pictures of the completed cabin.

A great little one-night-read that makes me feel like I've been to Ireland. A great story, very well told. I love reading moral dilemmas.

Reborn Journals & Notebooks 1947 1963
by
Susan Sontag

I have to admit that I hadn't read any of Susan Sontag's writing before this collection. I think it was the voyeuristic aspect of reading someone's journal that interested me at first, but I stayed interested throughout this volume because of feeling the excitement of her insatiable intellectual curiosity. And the fact that the selected journals start when she was only 15 make it even more amazing. Of course, I now regret that I'll never get a chance to see her in person, but you get bet I will be reading her works.
