Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Long Way Home: Chief Inspector Gamache 10
by
Louise Penny

It has seemed like a very long time to wait for the next Inspector Gamache mystery, but that only indicates how anxious we are to read more. Louise Penny has created a story and characters that we care about as if they were our own family. We experience their highs and lows, their anxieties, their joy and contentment. The Chief and his wife are now living full time in Three Pines, where he is slowly recovering from the mental and physical trauma that hastened his early retirement. Clara's husband Peter has not returned as planned from their one-year separation, and she is frantic. She finally asks Gamache for help; and, of course, everyone helps. While the story seems to meander along, it's building to another exciting end. We are left waiting impatiently for the next book!

The Art Forger
by
B. A. Shapiro

Beyond being a good mystery with lots of facts about art forgeries and the art world, this is the story of a struggling artist presented with a Faustian opportunity. She agrees to copy a masterpiece for more money than she has ever earned, with the ultimate prize being a solo showing at a great art gallery. But of course things get more complicated, and we readers just get to hang on for the thrilling ride that has lots of twists and turns. Everyone in my book club enjoyed this, with one person staying up all night to finish it. I'm looking forward to more books by Barbara Shapiro!
