Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Peoples History of American Empire A Graphic Adaptation
by
Howard Zinn

Addictive. It's even more satisfying than the book. Professor Zinn brings his own voice and life experience into the graphic novel. It makes many connections across hundreds of years that only someone with Professor Zinn's breadth of knowledge is able so simply state.

Politics the Wellstone Way How to Elect Progressive Candidates & Win on Issues
by
Wellstone Action

, November 23, 2008
With election season coming up for villages, school boards and library boards in the next few months, it’s timely to read this book. I found it more useful than most other books on running for office which start from a major party point of view. This book comes to running for office from an activist point of view. I found the discussion of how to effectively communicate with voters provides step-by-step information to make sure you are heard. The Wellstone people also show you how to apply the same organizing techniques used for political campaigns to issues activism.

Your Money Or Your Life Transforming You
by
Joe Dominguez
iwilder
, November 23, 2008
This book sparked the modern simplicity movement. It remains one of the pre-eminent sources for how to create financial freedom by separating your needs from your wants. This is not a get rich quick scheme. It is the progeny of Thoreau’s “On Walden Pond”. The Harvard-educated Thoreau freed himself from the business world by by taking the extraordinary measure of changing his life from pencil manufacturer to squatter. Dominguez and Robin suggest a less drastic change by helping you re-direct your prosperity from consumer driven wants to enough wealth to stop working.

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
by
Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin
iwilder
, November 23, 2008
We’ve loved this children’s book for a while, and were not surprised to find it for sale on a union website as a gift for children. This book is the best inspiration we have ever seen to inspire a love of writing, and a feeling of empowerment. Talk about power of the pen! When Farmer Brown’s cows find a typewriter in the barn they realize they can start making demands. They go on strike when the farmer refuses to give them what they want. Doreen Cronin’s understated text and Betsy Lewin’s expressive illustrations make the most of this hilarious situation. Come join the fun as a bunch of literate cows turn Farmer Brown’s farm upside down. Buy a copy of this book for: your activist friends as comic relief; the children of your Republican friends to subvert them; children who haven’t yet figured out that writing can equal self-expression and liberation.

Our nephews loved this book. The anachronistic interaction of the snowman from the world of people with the animals of the forest creates a compelling view of nature.

Dare To Hope Saving American Democracy
by
Jason West
iwilder
, November 30, 2006
New Paltz Mayor Jason West will re-shape American politics for decades to come. As one of the America's youngest mayors, he has led his NY village through a serious of revolutionaries changes: reed-bed filtration, solar power and, as internationally reported, the only East Coast mayor to perform same-sex marriages. West went toe-to-toe with NY AG, now Governor-elect, Eliot Spitzer over the civil rights of same-sex couples. Though West is still under an injunction to not perform same-sex marriages, criminal charges were dropped against him. This Green Party leader's book lays out both his philosophy and the changes needed to make America a more democratic and just country.
