Stalins Ghost
by

This was a very engaging book. I loved it. Arkady Renko was smart and tough as he investigated sightings of Stalin's ghost on Moscow's subway. In the process he ends up investigating murders that may have been committed by fellow police officers who were trying to coverup their pasts. One officer was also campaigning for election by appealing to those who believed that Russia was better off under Stalin and communism. This same officer was also Arkady’s rival for Eva's love. While Arkady worked to bring his fellow officers to justice, a Stalin atrocity is revealed and Arkady dealt with memories of his father who was a general in Stalin's army. It was fascinating to read about the Red Diggers, apparently a real organization. The love story was obsessive. I wished there had been an emotional reconciliation rather than skipping to the final scenes. There was plenty of action that was kept going by unforeseen happenings and compelling characters including Zhena the boy wizkid, chess player. I highly recommend this book.

Demon In The Freezer

A great read. It took many people of dedication and foresight to eradicate smallpox. I had no idea that smallpox was such a horrible disease--spreading like wildfire from person to persons, inflicting terrible pain and gross disfigurement. But the threat of smallpox didn't end with the eradication program. I highly recommend this absorbing book.

Wild Fire
by
Nelson Demille

I've read several of DeMille's books and Wildfire is tied for 5th favorite after The Gold Coast, Word of Honor, Up Country and The Charm School; and tied in enjoyment with Plum Island and Nightfall. In Wildfire I though the oil baron, megalomaniac was unreal; John Cory was, as usual, a little too smart mouthed; and the fenced, fortified compound was maybe too familiar. Nonetheless, Wildfire was a superbly crafted mystery/thriller with no loose ends and chapters that leave you eager to read on.
